I can’t believe this movie wasn’t nominated for at least best cinematography or original score
Seriously. This film is absolutely beautiful.
Who gives a fuck. It’s a beautiful gem. Some people just wouldn’t get what it means. The true meaning of the feature. I think it’s brilliance shouldn’t be defined by if it got Nominated for Oscars or not. Fuck that.
Super late response, but any idea what the song title is? Can't find it on the soundtrack.
@@BelleOrchestre Musique à Grande Vitesse: 1st Region - Michael Nyman
@@juzogreenwood Thank you so much!!
It's really sad to see a gorgeous film like this not be recognized at all.
If it was 2 white guys it would've
It won Sundance. 😂
The buildup of the music, the beautiful motion of each shot, the slow motion, and the voice over, all make for such a resounding opening scene. Reminds me why I love movies each time I watch it.
The opening scene itself deserved at least an Oscar nomination lol it’s beautiful
Totally agree.
The crazy man chasing them and shouting "Take me with you" is the director Joe Talbot.
KevinSlapsGrannys it hella San Francisco too lmao
He looks like Johnny (Michael X. Sommers) from Sorry to Bother You.
@@rishshortfilms that's who i thought he was lol
I KNEW IT! lol
It's Bug from Sense8, isn't it? Joe Talbot shows up later on in the movie, I think Jimmy or Mont is giving him a flyer for Mont's play.
It will always be remembered as the movie that presented Jonathan Majors to the world, a truly magnificent performance.
This scene gives me chills every single time I watch it. Absolutely perfect from the cinematography, to the speech, to the incredible score. It's amazing how well the song fits what's going on here. The cue when the city skyline pops up over the hill, the ominous sounds when they see the bystanders staring at them, the way it builds as Jimmie and Mont get close to the house. It's absolutely perfect. I can't get enough of it.
When they refer to skating they really mean something else right ???
Such a amazing opening scène
tijmen vennik Right?! One of the best I’ve ever seen.
This is still the most breathtakingly shot film I’ve ever seen. I come back to it often. The opening sequence makes me feel the warmth, the fleeting moment of the early light, the city sights and sounds, it’s everything a film should present, it enlivens that city, I’m breathing in that salty Bay Area air. The soundtrack is amazing. Why it never won any Oscars is an absolute crime. Nothing has come close to the artistry of this film.
This is an incredible scene (and film) but a note on the music - the song used is Michael Nyman's "MGV" which was commissioned for the 1993 ballet "DGV" choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon. The piece was honoring the opening of a new high speed train line in France, hence the music's propulsive, energetic quality. It was performed as recently as February 2020 by the New York City Ballet. The film's score was composed by Emile Mosseri, which might be why no one can find this song on any soundtracks.
That's what I was trying to find out! Thank you!
Thank you!!!! I’ve finally found what I’m looking for thanks to you
Ive been trying to find this track for a while now, thank you
This is the song: czcams.com/video/SkjNkJkQ-jc/video.html
I didn't realise this at all (totally assumed it was Mosseri who is obviously a fantastic composer in his own right). Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge, especially the part about the purpose of its commission - you can certainly hear its intention when you know it was for a new high speed train line. Its a truly wonderful piece of music!
Man this movie. It makes you think of how many people are lost in life, chasing things they can never get because they never found a way even though they are capable of a lot. Mont and Jimmie became two of my favorite characters of all times
This movie's too heartbreaking to ever think Jimmie was lost in life. Thinking that way is dipping into a reality this film doesn't at all deserve.
Genuinely haven’t seen any film like this before. My favorite film of the year hands down.
If this movie don’t give you goosebumps you have no soul. It was an honor to watch this movie.
I know awards don't make a movie and they certainly don't determine its value but damn I will never be okay with the fact this movie didn't get more awards. The acting, the cinematography, the writing, the score is just heartbreakingly beautiful.
Makeda Phillips it’s a crime that this film wasn’t nominated for anything. One of the most amazing films this century.
@@extofer agreed!
Best movie of 2019. I'd read good reviews for months before it finally showed up at the art house theater in my town. Sitting there in this completely empty old school theater when this opening scene came on and absolutely blew me away. The way it's cut together and that amazing, building music coupled with the voice over. I can watch this opening a hundred times. It is absolutely masterful cinema.
In a year of great films this deffo isn't the best movie of 2019
@@daftbanna7202 There were a lot of great films of 2019--so many that I struggle to make a top 10. But for me too, this was #1.
@@daftbanna7202 one of the best films of 2019. Maybe not the best but it's up there.
@@stuartcampbell4626 It was a great movie. I saw it in Cleveland at Cedar Lee theatre an independent movie theatre when it opened in 2019. I just watched it again on Showtime after 3 years. It's amazing.
@@christiancharles2689 yeah for sure
This was a great film, hadn’t cried during a movie in years and this movie did it to me twice. 10/10
this is an amazing scene... the cinematography a 10/10
This movie is poetry.
i just keep coming back. this scene makes me feel a certain strong emotion i can only describe as feeling moved and inspired. such a beautiful piece of filmmaking.
Everything about this opening is perfect. It sets the tone for what I believe is one of the greatest films of this century.
From the moment this film started, I knew I was going to watch something amazing. It did not let me down for one moment. This film is a masterpiece.
Remember your truth... in the city of facades
The best opening scene of any movie ever. Wow.
Men cry at the opening, knowing they've been heard, recognized, acknowledged, seen, and heard, on the silver screen for what may feel the first time in their lives.
The intro alone is Oscar worthy!! Its so inspiring and the music is hella uplifting
This opening scene always reminds me of how proud I am to be from the Bay Area. There really isn't any other place in the world like it.
I go back to this opening sequence every time I need inspiration as a filmmaker.
I'll never get over the mirroring of Jimmie and the architecture of the city - that moment stays with you
Love this movie and this opening was epic af
This film made me feel new feelings. 10/10 Probably the strongest debut film I've seen.
I still love watching this after 3 years. Amazing movie
I loved this! I was literally mind blown in the theater watching this cinematography. I need to make some videos
It definitely made me want to do the sameeeee bro!
Every time I watch I get chills... insanely beautiful
I know everyone keeps saying it but THE CINEMATOGRAPHY IS LITERALLY INCREDIBLE and this movie did not get enough hype 😞
If it weren’t me stumbling into this channel I would have never known that this film existed.
one of the best scenes in the history of filmmaking
I have a good instinct that Jimmy Rollins conceptualized this film. Brilliant work
This opening scene is beyond beautiful, Makes me cry every time I see it
To know ownership, to feel status, not defined by others but by yourself, and to have it taken away from you...
It isn't a hunger pain for money but a hunger to return to a time when things were "better".
When you felt "better".
I remember watching the opening scene in Woody Allen's "Manhattan" and wishing someone would love San Francisco enough to make a movie about it and 20 years later I got my wish.
The music, the shots, the slow-mo, the characters, the story! They are everything that is breathtakingly beautiful in this movie!
One of my favorite openings ever. I was sold immediately
How can someone even dislike this? ... No, im serious man, how?
They're lesbians. Its so fucking crazy how people cannot tell. Would men ever act like that. Can you not look at the faces and their bodies and tell????
It's also completely fake version of San Francisco. I have never seen the city accurately represented on film EVER. People try so hard and it never works.
@@paulstevens6043, I never visited San Francisco, what is so wrong with his representation in the movie?
@@paulstevens6043 wtf r u on about "they're lesbians"
@@paulstevens6043 this movie is great and that's fact. U are crazy and have no idea what you are talking about. The music, acting and cinematography are great. U have no idea what it takes to film or represent a city in a movie. Be quite asshole!
We built more than jus San Francisco, built the whole country 💯✊🏿
We built the Cosmos and everything in it.
Watching this movie at the cinema, the opening took my breath away.
This movie was ridiculous. So good. I listen to this everyday it's so good
some of the crispest editing i've ever seen in a movie
wow ! As a man who was born and raised in NYC and then was stationed in SF in the mid 80s I can totally relate. We were two amazing American cities that changed in our lifetime and not for the better
God this movie is so good
I knew that the ending was being foreshadowed as soon as I saw Jimmie ahead with the skateboard and Mont running to catch up. Still caught me by surprise though.
Saw this film a few weeks ago. It was such a unique and wonderful experience. The opening is so powerful. I got goosebumps!
I miss living in The City! There’s no place like San Francisco!
this opening is wonderful
This is such a powerful scene right here. Beautifully shot, beautiful music, and beautiful speech.
This sequence gets my heart rate up. It is a transcendental experience. After watching this for the first time, I knew, that this was one of my favourite movies.
This is cinema - visual storytelling that’s compelling & complex - at it’s finest. You can hold this up to the greats of the past - Tarkovsky, Fellini, Bergman, Kubrick etc and say this is genuinely carrying on that same tradition. Wonder stuff.🙏🏽
I keep watching this. It's truly grand in scope. The music inspired some amazing imagery and both combined sends chills. Almost a Samsara vibe to this. Everything that follows is almost a let down. Such an amazing start to a movie.
I moved from Detroit to San Francisco many years ago to work for a community and economic development based law firm on Market Street. The lawyers in the firm were charged with, among other things, addressing the gentrification and economic displacement in San Francisco that the film presents. Unfortunately, those issues remain and continue to dramatically alter the demographics of not only San Francisco, but Oakland and other surrounding Bay area communities.
Facts. Notice how few comments bring up that topic.
Truly a masterpiece of cinematography
THIS HERE gave me goosebumps the first time and it gives me goosebumps EVERY TIME. In-fucking-credible. This film is pure art
Just watched this for the first time the other day, and then for a second time yesterday. Absolutely love the film, this sequence pulled me in immediately. And like with all great films, it has even more meaning upon second viewing, using masterful editing to juxtapose the two sides of San Francisco, and to compare Jimmy's body and clothes to the windows, curtains, and trim of the house... just brilliant storytelling. And the way the music picks up as they see reveal the skyline?? Come on. COME ON!!!
This is such an amazing film. Loved this opener
This scene sparks something in me
Outstanding movie, can't stop watching it.
best first 5 minutes of any movie ever
MAJESTIC.
This makes me believe in cinema again
THIS SONGGGG
I know locals laugh at how the geography is way off when jimmy and mont make their way through town but as a person who was born outside the states, all i see are the streets of my own city.
one of the best openings in film - EVER!
This is so .... godamn i feel it in my skin
Magnificent scene.
sooo sooo good!
How is it I am only now learning of this brilliance?! I'm 120 seconds in and I'm obsessed. What was it's release? Limited, I'd imagine, but, surely, it was received with accolades and mass praise...?? Please reassure me it was given proper attention and rewarded with some marked form of accreditation by way of critical, domestic and/or box office validation--if not all three!--else the tattered and faded remaining sliver of faith in the future and integrity of the human species is once again at risk of being destroyed indefinitely.
incredible scene
Absolutely stunning wowww
This's how a cinema should start 💛
Cinematic af
Beautiful ❤
I loved this movie!
Crazy to see them in places I grew up ❤️
This movie was amazing 👏 🙌 😍 😭 ❤
This sequence in an empty cinema? What a moment.
what lens did they use? especially in the beginning when they were riding down besides the bay?
this is a genius movie
THIS IS OUR HOME! OUR HOME
Kind of incredible how Jimmie Fails had never really acted professionally before this film
as a teenager who is very much a product of the rise of silicon valley and and the gentrification of san francisco, this movie makes me so upset and uncomfortable and makes me hate myself just a little and for that i freaking love it with all of my heart
Legit I can’t find this specific song on the soundtrack. Does anyone know where I can find it?
It hasnt been uploaded to anything :((
I really wish they'd post the song somewhere. It's one of my favorite on the soundtrack.
this song is First Region (From MGV) by Michael Nyman from 1993. I think the rest of the score is by Emile Mosseri :)

Thats the Preachers voice from the beginning of the Movie!! The actor/rapper Willie Hen!

Does anyone know the name of this piece of music? I can’t find it on the soundtrack on Spotify. And I just want to listen to it on repeat while I’m driving.
'MGV 1st Region' by Michael Nyman
what a movie
I miss frisco and the whole bay. There’s nothing left for me there though

✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿
I really wish they would have added this sequence to the official soundtrack
It's a piece by Michael Nyman, so that's why it wasn't on the OST. It's been around for a few decades.
And the American audience thinks Joker is a good movie. Cinema is going to die because people aren't watching actual great cinema. What an excelling film this was!
Joker was great but man this movie is a whole nother level, I cried and was awed at how emotional and raw the story felt.. cinematography is a whole other discussion too.. I’d call this a perfect movie
I enjoyed both
Joker didn't win The Golden Lion for not being a great movie lol both are great
The cinematographer on this film really achieved something special. Those primes and when they did use the zoom lens was perfection. The color grade was terrific, art direction, color palette amazing. Gotta love Arri cameras that help aid the DP's vision.
Both Joker and Last black man were great movies.
Does anyone know the song ?
