This song was a huge #1 hit worldwide in Fall, 1970 right in the middle of the anti-war movement.

I was in my early teens when this song came out, and Freda Payne had a song called, "Bring the Boys Home". I heard that both artist career had stalled after those hits.
Check out the metal mashup version: czcams.com/video/KZB9w1w9dKo/video.html
@@true1evanique Gotta wonder how coincidental that was, huh?
Definitely 1970 when I was graduating from high school.
This song will ALWAYS be relevant!!
True. And that's sad.
i hope not.but the Military Industrial Complex will make sure of it
@@KASPA-KEY You know nothing about that conflict. Stop acting like you do.
â@@KASPA-KEY Or any US president who's been looting, raping and destroying sovereign countries since 1945. So hypocritical.
You have to understand what it was like around 1970-71 to be in college, and realizing that guys who were in your classes were no longer there because they got sent to Vietnam. This song expressed the outrage.
1969 1972 High School
Lost 10 friends to Vietnam.
Counterculture was born....music was our only release, comman ground.....music that's still around 50 years later, .....
So that's why when they came home from Vietnam you threw stuff at them and called them names .they were confused young men fooled by their government and your colleges treated them like s*** who you kidding.
@@elsievickie My Cousin in 68 !! R.I.P. Cuz and All Who Served in Vietnam and All War's !! đ
And the war finally became a problem when they started looking at the more well off college kids for the draft, and not just the poor black and white kids. Interesting and sad
Did they enlist? I ask because I remember an exemption that kept college students excused from the draft.
Always loved this song. Relevant in any era.
Wow, I'd forgotten what an amazing soul voice Edwin Starr had and what a powerul song this was at the time, and still is. I know Bruce Springsteen recorded a cover version which was pretty amazing too, but nothing beats this original.
Springsteen's is a powerful live version recorded in 1985. âïž
@@Reclining_Spuds Yes, thanks.
Soul voice perfect for metal czcams.com/video/KZB9w1w9dKo/video.html
I fondly remember this song blasting in my barracks while in the Army in 1970.
Another great song came out that year by the Temptations titled Ball of Confusion. Lots of great music that year.
Love it
1970 was the last great year for AM Top 40 100K watt flamethrowing stations. By 1972, FM took over with AOR or album oriented rock in every major market. We had KILT 610AM here in Houston. It went all sports talk radio in 1994.
Those of us who grew up in the Viet Nam era remember this very powerful anti war song. Sadly still relevant today. Another light but powerful anti war song is by Country Joe and the Fish- called "Viet Nam Song" on CZcams. Just a funny/not funny ditty he performed at the Woodstock festival. What a time it was - I'm proud to be part of the Woodstock generation, we were appalled by the killing. Now days it's become all too common, sadly.
The song name is actually Fixin to Die Rag. Favorite line, Be the first one on your block to have your boy come home in a box.
czcams.com/video/ft0vkKCadgk/video.html
@@leonardsfriend5821 Thank you. I wasn't sure if there really even was a name. I only remember it from Woodstock. Then I saw it listed on CZcams. VERY clever lyrics that really hit home.
@@cindyfalstrom7231 the studio/album version is much better than the Woodstock version, if just for the sound effects, if you havenât heard that one.
68 and I'm sad, still.
This song was Edwin Starr's biggest r&b crossover hit ever!!! The song went all the way to hit the #1 spot on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Soul charts during the early fall of 1970. This song is the only anti-war song about the Vietnam War go all the way to hit the #1 spot on the Billboard charts. A terrific banger of a song!!!
This song was the Anthem of the Anti War Movement during Vietnam
Dang Skippy â„ïž
Top 3 things about this : Edwin's jacket, the delicious VHS slurs, AND Brad's loving every time he said, "Good God, y'all".
Imagine a pack of 10 year-olds riding around on their bikes singing this (or trying to lol).... the summer of '70.
I was 13 and this takes me back to the local hangout with an 8th grade boy singing this while playing a pinball machine. He'd hit the buttons to the flippers to the beat of the song. Funny how a song takes you right back to where you were at that time.
Brad & Lex, his "Twenty-Five Miles" was another hit song!
And "Agent Double-O-Soul" and "I Just Wanted To Cry" and "Love (The Lonely People's Prayer)"
My favorite is- I like that funky music
I really liked how Cookie Crew sampled it for their song âGot To Keep Onâ back in the day.
Brad must remember seeing the movie, "Rush hour", where Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan sang it together.
Another war song that's actually serious but funny to listen to is "Country Joe McDonald and The Fish - Vietnam Song", sung at Woodstock.
Huge hit in the middle of the Vietnam War.
This Song Blew Tom Jone's mind so much that he did a cover of it and barely changed a note!
It wasn't the First (or last) "Protest Song", but it sure is the most Famous!
This song is iconic in "Rush Hour" (1998).
It's also a song that will never stop being powerful, relevant and will continue to age brilliantly.
I have seen Edwin Starr twice, heâs, a great live Act!
Heâs great singing metal czcams.com/video/KZB9w1w9dKo/video.html
Was true in the 60s, is true now and will be true in a thousand years.
Amen!
"Who wants to die?" That just about sums it up, doesn't it?
So Funny.
You went from Puff the Magic Dragon.
To War.
Good God Ya'all.
Can I get a witness.
Would some like to confess their Sins.
I love the use of this song in the rush hour movies with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker
Iconic scene for sure
Edwin moved to live in England in 1983, where he was very popular on the Northern Soul circuit. He was based in the English Midlands. He died in 2003 aged 61. RIP Edwin.
Growing up during this period of time. we had 2 modes of education. Our schools, And AM radio listening to songs like this on the way to school
How have you never heard War before? Well, good for you listening to it.
So much passion in this performance. He's feeling and believing every syllable of this song.
2 others to check out: Ball of Confusion by
The Temptations and Eve of Destruction by Barry McQuire.
I bought both the complete War-Peace album and his 25 Miles album from Edwin Star for just one euro, in the 90's.
And remember thinking, how did I not know him before that. So much passion.
It also had ball of Confusion on it, the whole 12 minutes.
Edwin had so much soul. Power voice
Good god yall!
Lex love you are dropping all the high frequencies listening through a hat :)
Love Edwin Star I was lucky to meet him in the late 90s in Chester UK he was so friendly and a great live performer
This MUST HEAR Classic HITS LIKE A BRICK!!,, The Ides Of March "Vehicle"...Nuff Said.
"Although one wonders if Tolstoy's "War and Peace" would have been as highly acclaimed as it was if it was published under its original name "War: What Is It Good For?"
Elaine Benes at her best!
Hahaha đ. I was hoping someone made this Seinfeld reference. Well done!!

one of those songs that bring back memories of the movement for social change, a turbulent yet beautiful time when the music all artforms were a part of it . thanks
This was originally written for The Temptations, but their manager didn't want them to ruin their family-friendly image with anything "controversial". So they gave it to Edwin Starr instead, and it made his career as a singer who spoke to the people.
The weirdest thing about Edwin Starr was he was huge american motown star from Detroit, but ended up living in the weirdest little town in England, Dudley or somewhere like that.
Tamworth. Well, Polesworth, about 3 miles from Tamworth (where the made Reliant 3 wheelers).
Yep with the likes of suzi quattro and Bryan Adams for a while
Love this song and the beat!!
He was huge in the clubs in the sixties. Check out the album, soulmaster. Every track a winner. Thanks
I saw Edwin Starr and Eddie Floyd singing for Booker T and The Blues Brothers Band (Steve Cropper , Blue Lou - all of them) at the Birmingham UK Jazz Festival in 1990..............what a night đ
This song needs to be played worldwide every decade..Bruce Springsteen covered it in the 80's .
saw him live ,he got us all singing "absolutely nothin' ". yes LEX he was like a "fire and brimstone " preacher . sadly missed.
One word.....AMEN
Love, love, love this freaking song! Great R&B anti war song! Great vocal! Listen those lyrics! Beautiful!
Thanks for sharing and taking us to church. Always felt that way in the day!!
Rush Hour was the film you're thinking of. Edwin Starr was such a nice bloke. A few of us went to see him one time, and he recognised us as scooterists, he played may scooter rallies in the Uk, he picked us out and took us back stage for a drink and a chat after the show. He really was a top man. May he rest in peace.
Loved this song in 1970 and still do. And what a voice!!
My late husband was in Vietnam on his second tour. I was in high school.
One of my brothers was in Vietnam. And numerous friends had brothers there. We were all fearful for their safety. Most of us went to anti-war marches.
I met my husband in 1979. He was 8 years older than I was.

Loved the performance and great message. Bravo!
Edwin Starr Speaking the Truth, Great Song!
One of my favorite songs of all time.
Edwin Starr - underrated talent - such a powerful voice!
An absolutely brilliant song and performance, and a lesson the Humanity will seemingly never learn.
Sadly, you are on point!
American Edwin Star lived here in the UK , saw him live a couple of times he was brilliant , happy memories
Edwin Starr was born in Nashville and lived in Detroit but is buried in the cemetery round the corner from my house in Nottingham, UK
It sure livened up Brad, good to see!
An important message song, marred by 70's video-tape technology. This was a big hit in the early 70's, while Viet Nam raged. We all danced to it, but the message got through. Eventually.
SO PROUD OF YOU
Another great Edwin Starr song 25 miles
What young people don't understand about the Vietnam war was at that time young men were drafted into the military...You didn't have an option to not go... Therefore war was a very serious topic to young people who decided we shouldn't be there at all...A much different situation from today...
âGood God yâallâ was a popular phrase back then especially in songs. Iâve never heard it in any other context other than in music.
Seen now five times with laughter and teams in my eyes.
Edwin is so funny and Brad too. Great Song!
I still have this on the Gordy record label from when I was a kid. God I feel old now.
I love this...the music and the sentiment!!
This will take you to church...
he looked like a preacher with his moves.
and that vhs tape played to death too.
Yes, brilliant track đđ»
What a legend!
Great Voice, Great Song
Love it!
Dude was feeling this song hard!
I loved the VHS ripple in the middle of the video very nostalgic.

Ive been into this since 1975
Just classic Edwin Starr, actually got to see him live, a voice to die for.
In 1979 Edwin did 2 big disco hit ''Contact'' & ''Happy Radio''
Legendary ,What a voice and attitude Awesome
I have always loved this song my daughters and now my great-grandchildren love it always had a playing it loud and proud made damn sure other people heard it too
Great reaction! I was in jr high. Preparing to go to Nam.
This was released during my last year in the Navy 1970
Incredible.
Good God Yâall⊠this is a great reaction!!!
Awesome song. What a performance!
Hah, hah, yeah...huuuuh!! đ
My brother, my cousin, and my first husband all went to Viet Nam. I marched in San Francisco to protest the war. This song touched my soul, I had nightmares about the war. This is the first time I've seen him perform the song. I have this song on my Ipod because I never want to forget.
Check out "25 miles" it's a really awesome song by Edwin Starr
LOve this song , I remember it on Rush HOur where they are singing it , and dancing to it , Such a powerful message put in a way it grabs your attention too
his voice. damn sing ittt
this dude is just laying it down
I totally remember this!
this is right at the point where domestic oppostion to the vietnam war was reaching white heat. a long march from his '25 miles from home' (also definitely worth a listen/reaction).
Hahaha, yesss Edwin Starr. He's got a few bangers.
Please react to "Goodnight Saigon", by Billy Joel
Legend
This song was HUGE, yâall. I still love it. And no one else should ever sing it.
Ah the joys of the VCR lol! This is a banger, havenât heard it for years! Forgot how damn good his voice is!
Black Sabbath's War Pigs was released about the same time,
although they'd been playing a version of it since 1968.
Edwin was so on fire that he nearly melted the video tape. đ

Big song back then, remember it well.
In later years Springsteen would do this song in his live act.
I like his HAPPY Radio as well, fun toon.
For Brad, it was in the movie "Rush Hour" with Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan.
Heard it Rush Hour never stopped listening
