    MP4 is just a container, just as MOV. MP4 was created after MOV, borrowing almost all of it, so those are almost exactly the same. This is why it is easy to support both of those. The compression is done by compressors, or "co" part of the word "codec". The decompression is done by decompressors, the "dec" part of the word "codec". H264 and H265 are codecs. You had to desaturate your HLG footage, because you final artefact was in Rec 709 with much more limited colour range (and brightness), so everything looked overexposed. If your final artefact was also in HLG, then you wouldn't have to do anything, cuz everything would be done on the decoder's side and the screen (the brightness there would depend solely on the presenter's capabilities).

    Hey 👋🏻 …you said DLOG is best, but DLOG & HLG both have 10-bit colour depth…
    However, only HLG uses the wide colour gamut (Rec.2020 HDR). DLOG uses Rec.709 which is considered a SDR gamut range.
    So, HLG has equal colour depth to DLOG but has a greater range of colours (compared to DLOG) so HLG is “technically” better 👍🏻

I should make a video in the differences based on my own tests! Thanks again

Then post it to YT and have some 20 year old watching it on a $90 7 year old tablet with a broken screen tell me my video sucks. Lol! Seriously, I always wonder how important these incredible options are to the end viewer. To me, it will be fun to see my videos look better even when I chose a crap subject. I know this matters for certain people who pay attention to details or professionals. To me, I wonder if people who are just short thumbers are even going to recognize the slight difference. I’m going to keep trying to get better with my decisions about what options to shoot in and eventually setting it up right for the given specific light and environment will take no more time that I currently take just leaving it on jpeg /normal. It’s hard just getting people to change their screen settings to “maximum” or 1080 …. That’s half the issue… a lot of people don’t even know they are watching videos at times in 720 or lower

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  Před rokem +2

      Hey ther Piotr, I understand this probably was a confusing way to present this - since this video was specific to the mavic air 2s, H264 options are 8-bit and H265 are 10-bit when were talking about the Mavic Air 2S. For example, there are no option to shoot in H265, and have the video be in 8-bit color. I should have explained this better, but the 8-bit H264 footage will have less data to color grade with, while the 10-bit h265 is less compressed when were talking about colors. I should have explained this better, as h265 is more "compressed" than h264 when comparing the two files together - but through the lens of the mavic air 2S's colors, the h264 = less color data. h265 = more color data. I could have done a better job explaining this! Will keep this in mind for future videos.

    You are wrong. There is no practical difference with MOV or MP4. Also H.265 or H.264 doesn’t affect the bit depth. Using the D-Log is what affects. H.265 results in smaller file vut it demands a lot more processing power

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  Před rokem

      Hey there Jaakko, at 0:30 in the video I go over the difference between MOV and MP4 - it's not as big of a difference like RAW vs JPG, but how these file types work (more specifically, the "wrapper"), MP4 is typically more compressed, while MOV isn't as compressed. People ask about the difference between MOV and MP4, so I decided to put it in the video. On the Air 2S, H.264 is 8-bit and H.265 is 10-bit. You're correct that codecs dont affect bit depth, but were specifically talking about the Air 2S in this video, so were talking about H.264 being tied to 8-bit and H.265 to 10-bit which is where I got the millions vs billions of colors statement. Maybe I should have been more clear about that - will keep that in mind of the future and thanks for your feedback

    Am I missing something or are you mixing things in this video? I feel the things you say about 264 vs 265 are very wrong @ 1:07
    H.265 (aka High-Efficiency Video Coding or HEVC) offers 25% to 50% better data compression at the same level of video quality, and file extensions like MOV, AVI, MP4, etc are just media containers. both QuickTime and MP4 containers can use the same MPEG-4 formats, you can call the containers rumparun and it will not matter for the media format. For the load, It puts on your CPU, get a GPU or CPU that supports H.265 like the very normally inexpensive GTX1050 or 6th-gen Intel CPU, (there might be a hefty pandemic tax on the GTX 1050 today), but anyone with a fairly new video card has HEVC hardware support, and anyone with a reasonably powerful CPU can decode at least 1080p HEVC content with no direct hardware support.
    (You are right about 265 being harder to transcode than 264 but that is expected since 264 is older than outdated dirt)
    265 takes about ½ of the storage space needed by 264, a standard 4K transmission 265 is 14mbps while 264 is 32mbps.
    Copypasta from the interwebs Hardware Support: Intel 6th-generation 'Skylake' Core processors or newer. AMD 6th-generation 'Carizzo' APUs or newer. AMD 'Fiji' GPUs (Radeon R9 Fury/Fury X/Nano) or newer. Nvidia GM206 GPUs (GeForce GTX 960/950) or newer.
    But even with the tiny problems in this video you've gotten a sub for life because I like the production, editing, and you have a relaxing voice that makes the videos easy to listen to.

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  Před 2 lety +2

      Hey there - at 1:07, I meant these are the best settings if you have a slower machine and/or don't want to color grade and share quickly. (I use this all the time for quick sharing). "Best" settings in that regard are actually the "worst" settings if you're trying to color grade your footage and have a beefy computer. The "Best" settings for the best image quality would be the h.265 log, but would be a nightmare to edit on an older computer or make your image look bad if you want to share footage straight off the card to social media or a friend. Before I built my current spec'd out PC, I had a 2015 MacBook pro and a PC with a GTX1060 and an intel CPU (cant remember which one off the top of my head), and it really struggled with h265 footage. I always try to make a point to include "more compatible" video because not everyone can drop thousands of dollars on a computer to edit with. I totally understand where you're coming from though and I appreciate you pointing that out. I should have made that clearer that was the direction that I was going with that setup. These really spec-dense videos are tough to make, and thanks for pointing that out (and subscribing!)

    • @TheAdminFromHell
      @TheAdminFromHell Před 2 lety

      @@keith-knittel Ah okay, I think you are right to simplify things while explaining it, too much info might be confusing to some people (me specifically lol), but on a good note, we are expected to have "industry-wide" support for H265 by the end of 2022/23 (last I heard) but we have a few viruses messing up dev roadmaps across the globe so yeah ... but, in theory, this means we will be able to upload H265 and do not have to wait until YT is done encoding/re-encoding it and get to upload a smaller file. For now tho, I will do as you say and use H264 while recording or change my 265 using something like handbrake.
      I've never used the MacBook with an Nvidia GPU, I suspect yours struggling because it lacked NVENC/HEVC support or something weird like that, as you probably know, Apple and Nvidia have been in a cockfight since 2008/2009, and support for Nvidia has since then gradually faded a little bit per year until now where we have no support for Nvidia on Apple. (This entire fight is beyond stupid IMO, given how greedy both of these companies are you would think they'd kiss and make up by now to make some more money.)
      The intel graphics you are thinking about might be Intel Iris 6100? That one does not support anything hardware-related stuff. :(

  • @zacjohnson8404
    @zacjohnson8404 Před rokem

    It's way easier to get a nice looking image in normal h.265 vs d-log and there's still a little room for colour grading. Also has the added benefit of filming 1.3x zoom which has no registerable quality loss, looks the same as 5.4k cropped to 4k and gives you that compressed scene look like m2p hq mode.

    • @wolfiemedia
      @wolfiemedia Před rokem +1

      Using the the pre-processed video the drone makes for you is ok for social media purposes, but D-LOG or HLG is the way to go for anything more/creative. The Air 2S only has a digital zoom, not optical - so it’s not the same as cropping 5.4K (using the full sensor). When you zoom, you are artificially zooming into 4K, making it even less. There is no zoom in DLOG, so that should tell you the difference in the information available with normal vs. DLOG. Curious, why would you zoom 1.3x? Seems pointless…

    • @zacjohnson8404
      @zacjohnson8404 Před rokem

      @@wolfiemedia I have filmed the exact same thing side by side, if you put the 5.4k clip into the 4k timeline it is about the same fov as 4k 1.3-1.4x zoom. Looking at both clips as carefully as I could, they look exactly the same to me.
      It isn't exactly digital zoom by the way, it's a sensor crop.
      You would zoom 1.3x because it brings the background and foreground closer together, for a certain look. Similar to the Mavic 2 pro hq mode. But beyond 1.3x I personally can notice some quality loss, but it's only really noticable closer to 2x.

      @@zacjohnson8404 that makes perfect sense, the zoom/depth of field bit 👍🏻 there’s still much more information available in the DLOG to recover though. I’m into images, not videos - so I see it like JPEG vs. RAW. The JPEG is ok, but you can’t fix blown out highlights or work with the shadows of a compressed JPEG. RAW has an insane amount of flexibility. Maybe video is a bit different then and I have it wrong 👍🏻

    • @zacjohnson8404
      @zacjohnson8404 Před rokem

      if I were comparing jpeg to the normal colour profile it would be more like jpeg compares to h.264 normal and raw is h.265 dlog. h.265 normal would still be better than jpeg equivalent, in my opinion.
      if I could shoot dlog with the option to zoom I would still prefer that but the image that comes out of the drone in normal h.265 is pretty damn good I think and you can still do colour grading on it but yeh the dynamic range is shot, you get what it gives you pretty much but there is still tons of colour information there.
      I also find it way easier to edit raw images than d-log video, unless the scene is perfect I just find the image will look shit coming out of the air 2s d-log if you don't know what you're doing.... or maybe it's the camera but I find I can get better colours in bad lighting or in the shadows in normal profile verse me trying to edit the dlog.
