    I liked the HLG outside - VLOG inside of your sample footage. I'm lucky, I didn't put the word Camera in my channel title and after 210 videos published I've only had one criticism of my video or audio quality --- they said the background music was too loud. I do enjoy watching the techy video sites, one should always be trying to move their skills up a notch. Good Show!

    V-LOG is so much sharper in the outdoor shot. Maybe from the f-stop changes though.
    Edit (after watching full video): Definitely feel like the V-LOG is sharper overall, which is something I prefer personally. Much rather soften images in post or with filters than try to sharpen. I’ve also noticed that HLG provides image without noise comparing to other profiles in GH5. In this case I don’t need V-log. I guess V-log would be better for those who really play with creative colour corrections. If you looking for better natural image without any playing than HLG works perfectly.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes - HLG will give you almost the same dynamic range as v-log and some other benefits. With 01-bit HLG you can color grade pretty aggressively as well. HLG and V-Log have differences, but it’s about the way you shoot and personal workflow. I use it too at times.

      Uups - surprizes me. I have the S1H and detected HLG only recently after shooting most of the time on V-Log.
      I am blown away by HLG, because it does NOT clip that fast in the highlights as does V-Log. Anyway, you need to avoid going beyond the max sensor IRE (look it up in the camera specs).
      Use a proper CST from HLG to Arri Log-C3 and grade in this color space, and you will get best colors even with heavy grading! At the end, transfer to Rec709 (mostly with another CST).
      I adpted my V-Log grading tree to HLG, and it waorks so well, regardless of camera (HLG Rec2100 or BT2020) is a standard across cameras), even with footage from my iPhone.
      And, it renders 2-3 times faster with my heavy grading tree - don't know exactly why, but who cares.

    • @joyoffilming9500
      @joyoffilming9500 Před 11 měsíci

      Update 7 month later: I had my S1H incidentally set to V-Log instead of Rec2100 and took some long shots in bright sunlight, taking care to expose the highlights to just touch 90%.
      When colour grading for HDR output, I recognised my mistake and switched the input color space on the Clips to V-Log - with surprisingly more pleasing colours than I was used to from Rec2100 footage over the past month.
      Not sure what the exact math deep in my camera is making this visible difference, but I will continue with V-Log for the next time.
      BTW, for rendering out to HDR 1000 nits, V-log is as great as Rec2100.

  • @PhillipRPeck

    Have you tried different conversion LUTs for vlog? The Leeming lut needs so much light, it's bizarre

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  Před 3 lety +1

      I have tried others, but none are as accurate as The Leeming LUT. The reason it needs more light is to maximize the dynamic range of V-Log without getting noise in the shadows (hence the exposing to the right). Most v-log conversion LUTS leave you with undesirable noise and artifacts in the shadows.

    • @PhillipRPeck
      @PhillipRPeck Před 3 lety

      @@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Ah, I see. That actually makes sense. I guess I should have read more about how it works!

    • @PhillipRPeck
      @PhillipRPeck Před 3 lety

      I can see this being helpful outdoors especially to minimize the amount of ND but for shooting indoors it can be problematic to add that much light (fan noise being an issue for instance). Aside from color accuracy, do you see a big difference in noise?

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  Před 3 lety +1

      @@PhillipRPeck I use a UL150 (no fan noise) because I hate fan noise from lights!! Yes - I see a big difference in noise if I don't expose to the right in V-Log. If you underexpose in HLG or V-Log you will get a ton of noise. And just exposing like a standard profile will still give you noise. So, if you expose to the right in both, you get the best useable dynamic rage. The Leeming Lut lets me ETTR and then in one click, convert the footage to pretty much perfect. Then I can add a heavy grade after and know I have a huge amount of data to work with

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

      Just because it was intended originally for HDR doesn't mean you shouldn't use it for standard rec.709. It gives far more dynamic range and more colors to work with than standard profiles and it won't fall apart in 8-bit like log profiles when color grading. HLG is becoming commonplace for editors who convert to rec.709.
