    Yeah Jiyoung had the blue hair for Pandora. It was.... a lot. The one you went "whoa" to with the bat was Hara. She is the visual for a reason lol. My bias Seungyeon hitting those high notes in Pandora, her absolutely adorable face belying her soulful singing voice.
    Glad to get you on KARA finally. Its SO hard to choose songs for a group as legendary as this, but this is what I came up with. I wasnt even sure if you were gonna like Step but I had to include it as I think its legitimately a perfect kpop song. One of the greatest of all time. But I dont blame you for liking Pandora more, I chose it because its also an absolute banger (KARA basically has no misses from Mister until the end, but w/e).
    That was one thing I forgot to mention was the usually massive jumps you would see today in KARA's MV quality, because after they blew up with Mister and promoted in Japan constantly they would have like one Korean comeback a year and like 3 japanese MVs, and they absolutely raked in the cash in the in-between in Japan with album sales and tours.
    God this group was so good man. it might be some time before we get back to them because I have so many 2nd gen girl groups to work through and show off, but we'll get there eventually (I havent even doubled up on my ults, T-ARA, for reference)

    KARA was one of my favorite groups back then! My favorite story to tell people that might not know is that "Mister," responsible for the infamous "butt dance" of kpop, is actually a b-side track! It didn't get an MV until they released the Japanese version. But that dance took Korea by storm. (Also, aside from the butt shaking, their abs in their Mister outfits was 😳)

    I’m going to be popping in and out on some of these iconic old kpop songs. I have heard them but haven’t seen the music video. Step by Kara was one of the earworms for me. Pandora, was a song that I was trying to find because I heard it and I didn’t know the name or group that sang it

    KARA was HUGE back in the day. Everyone talks about SNSD, and 2NE1, but consider that KARA was the top-selling Korean group in the Japanese market in their time ;o Well, KARA was still big in Korea too XD
    That's a trait for KARA songs, is that the solo member parts are generally quite short, so it actually took me way too long to be able to pick out each of the members myself XD For other groups, like SNSD, T-ara, miss A, etc. there are more solo parts where it's easier to pick out members, but their songs also do generally have those "chorus" parts where everyone's kind of singing in unison, which is much less common nowadays :o

    That "wet hair," look you mentioned might be sweat due to the fashion changes in 2nd Gen videos. Back in 2nd Gen, Fashion and Set Design was on a different caliber then today. Companies would have at least 3-5 different looks for their groups to wear, and they would film the MV 3-5 times with these different outfits, or even film the MV with the same outfit in different locations Depending on timing these different shoots could happen all in ONE DAY, or within HOURS of each other. Directors could even ask to see a certain point of the dance in different outfits. I remember either f(x) or T-ara said once that they filmed a version of an MV with a certain style of outfits, and that version wasn't even used in any way for the end product. This still happens today, but companies nowadays usually already have a certain look in mind before hand, and bring outfits accordingly.
    Back in the day a number of female groups would crimp their hair, and when sweat interacts with hair that has been dried in any way, it makes that unique wet yet firm look.

      @hslpt3 Před 2 lety +1

      well, i wouldn't include 2NE1 and T-ARA as 'OG' since they debuted in 2009 when the three other groups n more had already well established themselves enough to have a bunch of girlgroups debuting left and right by 2009. although if we're just talking popularity, yes. Jewelry and Brown Eyed Girls had been around longer. (although Jewelry had been from 1st gen but changed members a few times, n the last lineup had no original members) n Brown Eyed Girls debuted in same year as Wonder Girls but were considered faceless singers n nobody cared for them until they went the mainstream image with Abracadabra. both of those groups actually surpassed the big agency groups in 2008 though, with both having major hit songs- One More Time and L.O.V.E that were wildly popular in Korea n won bunch of music shows back to back(both songs even released n promoted around same time)

    honestly kpop back then had a lot of individual parts too, it's just a matter or whether you notice it or not or maybe the mixing or sth. maybe the chorus, yes it's more sung as a group than now where it's repeatedly sung by the main vocals/centers in some groups. but anyway with groups back then it's definitely easier to get a grasp of their vocals, because they don't sing with overly loud backtrack to purposely cover their live voices and hence you hear their voices, neither did they have the technology now has to trick people into thinking prerecorded as live since they even included breathing sound etc. although maybe because i am from those times. KARA infact was my first girlgroup, back in 2007. i mean i did check out Wonder Girls first(a live stage) but then i vowed to not check out any girlgroups anymore being very sure i won't like it...but thankfully a friend in a boygroup forum i frequented convinced me so hard on repeated occasions to try KARA because she was so sure i would love them, and she's right. more interesting was that she's more of an sm stan but she never pushed her sm favs on me unlike with how she would start bringing up KARA everytime we start talking on the forum... it's like she just knew me too well. xD...that was during KARA's debut era with Break It, so i managed to become a fan before their debut period ended thanks to that friend. and indeed then i met a bunch of dsp groups/singers(2nd gen era specifically) whose music, voices, etc. i love and i guess that's generally my taste in idols. though i do check out big names' music just to see if i was missing out anything and i do check out unknown groups too just to see if i could find more gems. but these days... it's hard to not get bored. maybe it's me who has changed. i just feel kpop over the years has changed to try tooo hard to cater to ifans taste n expectations with all the focus on crazyass universe lores noise songs that are supposedly cool n badass n edgy and whatnot...that it lost the elements that made me love kpop in the first place. of course even now, every now and then i would find some songs i love but yeah, i think even now my expectations had been lowered by a lot. of course now with 4364748584353 groups debuting left n right it's impossible to keep up with all n mostly i'd check out the hyped ones to see if they'd live up to the hypes. so there might be more hidden gems.

    Oh man, kara... back when my dog first got me into kpop (starting with falling for mamamoo on immortal songs) there was a local kpop channel that played both current music and older stuff. They played a whole lot of kara's "mama mia" and i honestly still can't get enough of, though it also hurts seeing hara in it (she was the one that always caught my eye there...)
    I'm sort of expecting to see some specific songs from super junior (sorry sorry), t.ara (roly poly), brown eyed girls (abaracadabra) and wonder girls (tell me)...just for a thing that's brought those four back to the limelight for many people and introduced them to many more

      @@KpopPrince ha, yeah... crazy reason, but it's true. I got my dog almost 8 years ago. She was a rescue...i was her third owner... and hated/scared of people.
      She'd bark at everything going on in the hallway outside my apt so i started leaving the tv on, just as background noise, while i did other things. And because i kept getting caught up in whatever show was on, opted to try other language channels. Went through spanish, indian, chinese, vietnamese, thai and a few others but the korean language really seemed to sooth her, so started leaving it on kbs world...where i was introduced to mamamoo and other amazing artists through immortal somgs 2, got into korean variety shows like 2 days and 1 night and gag concert and started my kpop journey with music bank episodes. Then i found a local kpop channel, as well, though it repeated things every 6 hours.
      So, started for my dog, fell in love with a bunch of stuff myself
