IS HAMILTON A NEOLIBERAL MUSICAL? The Immigrant in United States History

Seven years after performing for the then-President of the United States, Barack Obama, Lin-Manuel Miranda unveiled his masterpiece to the world, the musical Hamilton. With the help of maestro and musical director Alex Lacamoire, the story of the American Revolution and the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, Alexander Hamilton, hit the stage in 2015. Blending the worlds of hip-hop and Broadway with a multiracial cast, it became a hit with audiences and critics alike, now standing as one of the greatest phenomena in recent pop culture and one of the biggest box office successes in Broadway history. However, like all pop culture phenomena, its cultural impact has been enormous, prompting some interesting debates. Even though it's a musical, Hamilton deals with a past that is very much present in the daily lives of Americans. In this video, I discuss the history of the musical Hamilton, neoliberal ideology, and the imagery of immigrants in the US.
