Wait 5-10 years and think about selling and I’ll have some money for a nice vacation.

    Something small that I don't think you did, which is important to know is "the top trick", you can activate to draw with top, untap it with key and draw again, drawing a card and redrawing the top. When you are infinitely ahead on mana, it allows you to actually go up on cards with top, burying your opponent when they could otherwise grind out of it.

    • @PurpleDragonSpike
      @PurpleDragonSpike Před 4 měsíci +3

      It doesn't get bounced by outcome or replayed by lurrus so I could see why it might have less value in this deck

    • @BoshNRoll
      @BoshNRoll  Před 4 měsíci +6

      My exercise when answering questions like this isn't just "is Ponder good" but "what card am I cutting for it and how is Ponder better than that card". This deck is crazy tight and already at the minimum on flex slots (1 Bauble, 1 Opal, 1 Repeal, 1 FoN). Next cuts look like a Lorien Revealed or a Dress Down, both of which provide card selection and/or draw while doing something else too. We're not cutting a PO or Breach. Need all the mana. Where is the 2nd Ponder going?

    • @antmansenpai
      @antmansenpai Před 4 měsíci +2

      @@BoshNRoll But that is kind of my question. Ponder a clearly a strong card, but as it wasn't played over anything else, this would be an indicator that while powerful in card selection, is it too unimpactful as say dress down. ( it seems like the card I would look at as the swap slot if at all). Does the deck need 4 dress downs, vs more card selection finding power cards such as PO or even one of the 3 dress downs remaining if you need it. Dress down helps answer things like saga tokens and give a window against stax creatures. but ponder could help you find , . Is the mana and time needed for ponder not efficient enough to warrant this? hence the question "too uninpactful" and just needs to be a card like dress down and maximize just seeing it naturally with out card selection to find it.
      Compared to legacy where ponder is being your setup card, your land fixing tool, and your action card, in vintage is the role of ponder lessened due to the surrounding more power cards and fast mana mitigating the need of ponder in vintage to where its not as needed?
      Is the raw power of a vintage card make it so a single card draw with an additional effect (dress down) better than trying to find a specific card (ponder) since they are all equally powerful and it doesn't really matter which one it is

    • @fergusfisher1315
      @fergusfisher1315 Před 4 měsíci +2

      @@antmansenpaiI think a big element is the ability to recur dress down with Lurrus, which is a very effective creature lock and card advantage engine in a grindy game

  • @permabanter7770

    Any consideration to be made for Borne Upon A Wind as a way to breach or time vault on an opponent's turn? I'm sure there's purge shenanigans to be had or is the two mana too cute for Vintage??

    • @adawoo5494
      @adawoo5494 Před 4 měsíci

      Unfortunately time vault says "take another turn after this one" so if your opponent can combo off or remove the vault/key you can lose even if you pull it off. Funny ruling here, if the opponent time vaults after yours has resolved, they take all the turns and you never get one.
      It's also just that vintage cards need to be more powerful than that. This is competing with the likes of crazy cards like mystical tutor, gush, tinker etc (all not in this list). Maybe if it cost 0 or drew 2 cards or something equally powerful.

    • @adawoo5494
      @adawoo5494 Před 4 měsíci

      oh and ponder is at 4 now

    • @adawoo5494
      @adawoo5494 Před 4 měsíci

      chatting, forgot this was a lurrus deck and gush/tinker aren't allowed. Just replace those examples with preordain/ponder/blue vintage staples though, the point is that diluting your deck with weak cards is bad, I still agree with my conclusion.

    • @permabanter7770
      @permabanter7770 Před 4 měsíci +1

      Brian mentions ponder as a 4 as potential flex slots since there are so many more powerful things to do in Vintage, I figured there might be spots where holding 4 mana and breaching on an opponents end step might be advisable to beat FoN or protect the haymakers with your own.
      Slamming a breach or vault into play on the opponents end step let's you untap with them on the field and hold up a fair chunk of your interaction at the same time.

    • @Dracomandriuthus
      @Dracomandriuthus Před 4 měsíci +1

      Probably not.
      You've got Lotus and Sol Ring, and moxen for fixing

    • @derekcline950
      @derekcline950 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @Dracomandriuthus Lavaspur boots are specifically for making the Saga beats a two turn clock, not 3 (or 3 not 5 if they have removal). Mox, Sol and Lotus aren't a gameplan. Saga beats aren't an ideal gameplan but it is good enough if you keep FoW, blue card, sideboard hate, Saga, mox and lands.
      I think Lavaspur boots will see play in any Legacy Urza's Saga deck that can poop out 6/6 constructs on turn two. Every vintage Saga deck can do this, as they run power 9 artifact mana.
      I will concede that Lotus is almost always the right get with Lurrus, though, even if Saga beats are the plan. So maybe they don't see play in Lurrus builds?
