  • Would you believe if I told you that scientists found MSG in a meteorite in 1969? Even if you don't, watch this video where I explain how protein works in simple, layperson terms and try and convince you to eat more protein (especially if you are South Asian) and fewer carbs.
    Here is the "Project Project" report by Dr Abby Phillips where his team chemically analysed a large number of protein supplements in the Indian market and rated them - theliverdr/status...

    You are the real Krish, our very own Indian super hero. Don't you think schools should start a module called food science where they get to learn about nutrition, facts about sugar, quantities and qualities, busting myths, history of Indian food and interesting stories/wars around food? You are the perfect teacher for such a module. Great work sir. ❤

    4:47 Boss, two points:
    1. The 0.8 to 2gm per kg body weight is for your ideal body weight depending on your height, age, and body (ectomorph etc.), not what your current weight is. Many of us in urban India are overweight and may end up having too much protein based on that weight. 😅
    2. It would be good to introduce the concept of net protein utilisation (NPU) or the proportion of protein absorbed by the body from a particular food. NPU is very different for, say, egg whites (almost 100% by weight) versus rajma (

      He kind of indirectly did address npu and bioavailabilty when he mentioned that when it comes to vegan sources one needs to diversify their protein sources as none of them are complete. Npu increases with more complete amino profiling of your protein sources.

    I find your videos very well researched. These videos I can share with my friends and family because you talk about the eating habits of people in the Indian subcontinent. An important point to keep in mind is the bulk of food that you need to ingest to full-fill your protein requirements when you are exclusively on a vegetarian diet. Also, I think you may be surprised to know that protein requirements for endurance athletes might be higher than body builders.

    Big fan of your sir. You make really great videos. I followed you on Instagram, asked a question in the comment, and you responded. It was a surprise given the amount of followers you have amassed. I wish you more growth for you, and for people like me to get more educated. You also handle delicacies of telling people 'how/what' to eat very well. Great writing skills!! 👏👏👏
    One Video request: Carb vs Protein proportion in a healthy diet for different people as you covered here. (I would selfishly ask to elaborate more for a Hindu Vegetarian (lacto-vegetarian) Indian guy :P ). I have recently realized the whole Indian high carb diet + skinny fat issue. It is difficult to shake the dogma in anything and food might be on the more challenging side still. I would love to hear your views on this and I am sure you'll present it in a way that I can extend this to people of a wider age group (young people too)
    One Editing request: Please calibrate the audio levels. Sometimes the volume spiked too much. Idk what was happening there.

    Not long ago, I was awestruck about the miraculous molecule - that Protein is! I have also witnessed the power of this super molecule in close quarter - wherein often my energy levels drop low to the point that I just want to doze off after returning from office. I have initially thought if it’s Vitamin D deficiency or sorts & tried fixes. Later I substantially increased my protein content through Legumes. I could evidently observe the energy boost after a post evening protein intake. Can equate to how Popeye feels after Spinach (of course not exaggerated as the cartoon & it also comes with a lagged response).

    🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
    00:00 🐟 *Collagen, the most abundant protein in the human body, is found in skin, hair, bones, tendons, and more. Its production decreases with age.*
    01:09 🥩 *Protein is essential for life; it's the building block of muscles, bones, skin, and enzymes. It's made of amino acids, some of which are essential and must be obtained from food.*
    02:30 🧬 *Cells use DNA to create proteins through transcription and translation. The genetic code for amino acids is universal across all life on Earth.*
    04:47 🍖 *The recommended daily protein intake varies based on factors like age, activity level, and goals. For an average adult, it's around 8 grams per kilogram of body weight.*
    06:08 🍗 *Animal sources like poultry, seafood, and eggs provide high-quality protein. Sustainability is a concern with animal protein.*
    08:09 🌱 *Plant-based proteins, such as legumes and nuts, offer essential amino acids. Combining various plant sources ensures a complete protein profile.*
    10:39 🥦 *While plant-based diets can provide enough protein, dairy complements vegetarian meals to ensure complete protein intake.*
    11:50 🤔 *To ensure adequate protein intake, measure and adjust your diet as needed. Protein supplements like whey are safe for most people.*
    13:25 🥜 *Soy protein consumption does not affect testosterone levels in men. It's a nutritious plant-based protein source.*
    14:19 🌿 *Vegetarians can get enough protein by including a variety of plant sourcesI've provided the key takeaways from the transcript. If you have any specific questions or need more information on any of these points, please feel free to ask.*

    The video is amazing. Applause for the research and presentation.
    Eighty percent of Indians are meat-eaters, while only twenty percent are vegetarians. Despite this, it seems that this twenty percent often creates eighty percent of the noise in discussions about vegan and non-vegan diets. In your video, you repeatedly and indirectly state that you are not against vegetarianism. You should boldly say that a non-vegetarian diet is the better and more affordable option. For India to become a developed country, we need healthy individuals driving this progress.

    • @krishashok
      @krishashok  Před 8 dny

      I think both extreme positions are untenable. Yes, the vast majority of India are meat eating and it is also true that intolerance by a section of the elite vegetarian population regularly demonises meat and puts obstacles in the form of beef bans etc. At the same time, a vegetarian diet, if people are knowledgeable about its risks (iron, B12, Vit D deficiencies) is absolutely fine. I think I'd be happy with the incremental progress where vegetarians don't do things like refuse to eat along with people who eat meat on the same table etc.

I have one doubt to be cleared as you mentioned in this video that plant protein is a good supplement, then what about Lectin a protein which is present in most of the plants isn't it harmful for our gut as it binds to carbohydrates? This is why we typically consume them cooked (raw animal protein is ok to consume in comparison, if it’s fresh). Pressure cooking also significantly addresses this problem. Again, a diverse diet also addresses this problem

    Which Moong, Masoor and Toor Dal come in the list ? Since there are different varieties. I think for Moong you mentioned Green Moong. What about Masoor and Tur ?

    Can we have animal protein and plant based protein in the same meal? I read it somewhere that in such case the eater risks a toxic effect. Will be much obliged if you please clarify 🙏

      Arey, whether you like it or not, all your meals will have protein from both animal and plant sources! You can't avoid it! It is perfectly fine

    Just a curious question,
    Ehen cooking vegetable hoe do we determine amount of heat and time before some essential nutrients are destroyed due to heat?

    • @krishashok
      @krishashok  Před 13 dny

      Don’t overthink it. You have to heat to cook food! If your food is palatable you are fine! Just focus on eating a wide range of things instead of obsessing over nutrient maximisation of one dish

    Krish I have read somewhere that 0.8gm per kg requirements is against your total lean weight and not total body weight. So technically a 70kg person with 15% body fat would need around 47-48 grams of protein rather than 56 grams. Is that a more accurate measurement of protein requirement?
