Is there a way to provide a custom name when you save your activity? Right now it seems that the activity history are displayed as dates when viewed on the watch

Not on the watch, but you sync to your Garmin Connect account. . . . then go to Garmin Connect and rename them there to whatever you want. Hope that helps.

When I press the back button it goes into lap instead of normal watch face. Do you know how to change that?

Go to your watch settings and under current activity turn of the lap button
