    I used to do this, but, I stopped buying it this way, and started buying domino pure cane sugar in the 4lb yellow food grade plastic jugs. Yes, it costs a little more, but... They stack very well, and they are already sealed. Plus, I can use the jugs after they are empty. Mostly, I put 6 or 7 holes in the bottom and use them for growing extra, small veggies, like green onions, radishes, small lettuces, and other smaller greens eggies that I can grow 2 or 3 times in the same grow season. but, I use some for storage too. I end up with a lot of little yellow jugs around in strange places, but, they produce extra food.

      It’s not a little more, it’s over twice as much. 1.19 per lb. vs .52¢ a lb.

      @@garkmr6200 Not exactly. There is far more to consider. I walk in the door with sealed, moisture tight, stackable, containers. Subtract container cost, time, and space. I get 32lbs of sugar in a 14" space by stacking 8 high. Keeps my jars free for canning other food that I want sealed in a vaccuum. It takes me 2 minutes to rotate them, because the handle is built into the container. Super easy rotation. Every container is sealed, under that lid, and the lid is air & moisture tight. When empty, I repurpose the containers. I use them for everything from hauling feed grain, to water to the dogs, to storing other foods, to growing flowers for the bees in early spring, to growing veggies and strawberries in, to making fertalizer in. In the winter I grow leafy veggies in 10 of them to give to the chickens off and in through the winter. Happy chickens are productive chickens.

      @@BrendaBodwin I’d never jar my sugar. Mylar bags are much lighter, don’t have to worry about breaking and very space saving.
      I do like the convenience of sugar already in its container, I just think it’s too expensive.

      @@garkmr6200About the sugar.. theres a reason there is cheap sugar and more expensive sugar. Pure cane sugar vrs beet sugar. Cane sugar is waaay better for you. I use mylar for many things. Not sugar. Rodents and ants can smell and chew through it quickly. I don't want to draw either.. Sugar is a big draw. At home, no big deal to prevent, but, If I had to bug out, it would be a mess. If you put the mylar bags in plastic contsiners, it's not lighter. It weighs more. I'd rather have the critters get my rice than my sugar or my coffee. I can grow more rice. I'm my empty sugar jugs. 😁🤣😂🤣😂

      @@BrendaBodwin I disagree with cane sugar being way better for you than beet sugar. With the exception of most sugar beets being genetically modified, the chemical composition of either is identical.
      If you’re able to grow rice, you’re in a far warmer climate that I am.
      I put my Mylar bagged items (rice, beans and sugar for the most part) in 5 gallon buckets. No bugs or other critters can munch through.
      I’m still able to lift 50lbs easily, so it’s ideal, although that could certainly change in the future.

    I like to use permanent marker on the glass lid to mark the date and contents. Rubbing alcohol takes it right off when you want to re-use the jar. Just a little tip because I hate peeling off paper labels.

      Yes, I've used rubbing alcohol to remove writing off the lids.

      I find hand sanitizer great for getting ink off anything and it won't hurt anything as it's ment for skin. Stickers are great, rub the gel on and leave for a while to soak in, they come right off

    Tip - use a funnel to save any spillage and add a couple of bay leaves to deter any creepy crawlies. The big glass jars are too heavy for me so I use recycled glass honey jars.

    I bought sugar in 10lb bags and was trying to figure out how to store it without having to buy expensive containers on top. I went to Dollar Tree and bought some large vac storage bags for 1.25 and you can get 3 unopened bags in there. When I need to open a bag, I can tape it back up and reseal. Sealed nicely and sits well on the shelf.

    Reminder: empty containers weigh a lot less than packed, full ones. Don't pack more than you can lift esp if it is glass!

      Seems a lot of products are going to gallon size, or are several ounces smaller, what use to last a mointh, you might get 3 weeks. Milk is actually cheaper by the gallon, since only 1 person uses it, hub on his cereal, I was just buying 1/2 galon. @ $2.97 vs $4.09, he'll have to deal with the skim if I can find it. 2% if I can't. I'd hate to see what states like Hawaii that imports most food costs are, they have always been much higher. I use half/half to cook with. I don't like milk.

    I store sugar and salt (and rice) in plastic orange or grape juice bottles. Clean them thoroughly and let air dry. Use some white teflon tape on the threads of the bottle and screw the lid on tight. Been doing this for years with no problems and very easy storage.

    thankyou for your video. I am storing sugar still in the bag inside a plastic bin. Now I realize how important and easy to just put it all in my canning jars. Love that.       Jars are expensive right now. Budget is tight. I put two 4-pound bags in the refrigerator. I store all the flour I can in the freezer or fridge. Is that good?

      ​@MissyQ12345 a bit late but it's good to freeze flour for 3 days , let come to room temperature then store- kills bugs that might be in the flour. I vacuum seal

    Wow easy. Now I just have to find more jars lol! I do have 5 old beauties with the glass tops that a 93 year old lady gave me. I stored them and thought that I would use them for lighted Christmas decorations but now I will use them for storing sugar!

    I also buy sugar in bulk, we use quite alot as well. I have found the very best way to store sugar is to vacuum seal it. I use my sealer for everything food. I buy ground chuck in bulk, I make hamburger patties for my son, par-freeze them and seal them 2 per bag. Meats will last for years in the freezer when properly vacuum sealed. It's a life saver for brown sugar, once in a while I will have some tomato sauce left over, I pour it into an ice cube tray, freeze it, pop them out and seal up in a vac bag. Been using vacuum sealers for over 20 years and they really do save you money.

    I use food grade plastic 5 gallon buckets and have never had an issue. I love this idea though. I do use a half gallon size mason jar to store my sugar in my kitchen so I’m not having to constantly go to my food storage bucket

    I store sugar in large plastic buckets in their original one kilo bags here in Europe. Inside the buckets I place several bags of silica gel in each bucket. I also have several mason jars full of dried silica gel packs ready for use. Every three months I will change out the bags and replace them with the dry bags and then recharge or dry the wet bags in the oven according to their directions. (Usually 230-240°F ) I then reseal the hot bags in the empty mason jar. In the summer time I like o use my solar oven for this task. So far after ten years of this practice I don't have any problems.
    A great cheap source of silica gel is cat litter that is 100% silica gel and preferably the type that has no added scents. I sew up cotton bags that can hold one cup of the gel and then sew it up and recharge and seal in mason jars. I have even used this for food storage with no ill effects. You can also use these bags in your closets or the trunk of your car to absorb any moisture but be sure to mark the bags "Not for Food Storage" these bags will pick up scents which can transfer to food should one would make a mistake.
    We have the Bail type lid jars but the big problem is that the seals tend to deteriorate over time and it is difficult to find replacement seals. I would have used some very old antique Ball bail lid mason jars but I have not been able to locate any seals for them as they are smaller than the Italian bail tops. If anyone has a source for them it would be a blessing to be able to use them again.

      @Subgunman Here in the US I look in hardware stores, second hand stores plus anywhere that might sell canning supplies. Years ago I had four jars that needed new rubber bands, looked everywhere, finally I found them on eBay.

    I vacuumed sealed everything from pasta, sugar, dried beans 🫘 to even my flour as well as white rice being it is cheaper then glass jars & easier to store.

      when storeing the rice corn, or other whole grains its best to Heat the grain to 140 degrees F for 15 minutes or freezing at 0 degrees F for 3 day to kill any weevil

    When putting the lids on, be sure to wipe off the edge of the jars first. This makes the lids more airtight.

    I use a canning funnel to decant from bag to bottle. less mess, and I do it over a plastic tray. you can just tip the tray and empty any spills into the bottle.

    I have a store with a deli , our pickles , olives ,jallopenos , and banana peppers come in gallon jugs , I have been throwing them out ,but this is a great use for them storing food .

    I use stackable plastic containers with lids that snap down on 4 sides. I use the same type container for dry beans, rice, brown sugar etc. They are lightweight and if I drop one I won't have broken glass and sugar to clean up, possibly only the sugar.

    Re cheap containers; make friends with your local deli or restaurant. The glass gallon jars in my basement are now illegal in commercial locations, but the food grade plastic work well too. Any place that puts pickled pepper pieces on your sandwich can supply jars. Remember to ask them to save the lids too. If seal gaskets are questionable, put one layer of thick cling wrap under the lid. And do your packing of sugar on a dry day, not 90% humidity.

    I use a lot of sugar to feed my hummingbird I have the Anna hummingbird that's here all year long and lots of other hummingbird seasonal and I bake to cookies fresh fruit pies and cinnamon rolls mostly

    I’m gonna try this canning of sugar. I have four kids and three of them have kids. And three of them have spouses. So there’s thirteen of us that would benefit from storing of sugar if anything were to happen to our food supply. I’m thinking acquiring of meat might be somewhat of a difficulty at first but a true struggle later on. But seasoning the food we do have on hand would be a true necessity. I’m not prepared to eat meat without a little salt and pepper. Than for taking the time to video this and put it out there for us. God bless and keep you also!

    You should put it in a plastic freezer bag and then one of the moisture things and it will keep it fresh and soft the jar does consist of moisture I know I've done it

    I, unfortunately, stored well over 100lbs of that Walmart "granulated sugar" only to find out its not cane sugar. It's beet sugar 😔 I finally used up the last of it and buy nothing but Domino now.

    What's your thoughts on freezer bags and put in bucket with Bay leaves? I'm concerned about Earthquake activity.

      I've successfully stored granulated sugar in clean and dry 2 liter soda bottles for 10+ years. Sugar tightly packed into the bottles & the bottle capped. No vacuum sealing nor O2 absorbers. Filled bottles stored in a dry pantry off my kitchen. Stored the sugar in those bottles, so I could cut off the bottle, if the sugar hardened. It didn't!! Bought a bunch of sugar on sale, back then. Still have a couple of bottles in my pantry from Feb 2010. Plus, more since then.

      Back in 1999 we had the Y2K scare. Everyone was storing up for the computer breakdown that was supposed to crash our economy. My family stored 300 pounds of sugar in 1 gallon freezer bags. We double bagged and then put them in 5 gallon buckets. We did the exact same thing for 500 pounds of flour. We didn't know about Bay leaves at the time but double bagging and sealed 5 gallon buckets kept all well stored until it was all used. We were using that for years. The sugar we used for 3 years and the flour we used for much longer. We used the last flour in 2007. So yes...bagging is an option for safe storage.

    How do you store salt and what is the best kind of SALT to store long term?? Pink Himalayan Salt? Or Mortons Iodized Salt? Or Sea Salt? Or some other kind of salt? Also, what is the best container to store salt - glass jars with a seal OR Mylar bags that are sealed and stored in a food storage bucket??? AND do you put those little moisture blocking packets in the container? Thank you!

      Do you freeze the flour and baking soda for 3 days like you would beans amd rice prior to storing?

      You do put flour rice corn meal in freezer if u want to kill bugs or larvae you can't see. You can put oxygen absorbers in the flour after out of freezer and completely dried out. Don't put from freezer to Mylar or any container because it can mold. The oxygen absorbers will take oxygen out and kill any bugs if any left. I Google about baking soda I was curious also about it. Says don't have to put oxygen absorbers in it.

    Sugar kills bacteria by a diffusion gradient, and therefore even though putting it in jars is cool, it is not necessary, as long as the bags are kept dry.

    Not necessary especially if you use a lot. Sugar doesn't go bad, it may get hard but will easily break up. I have alot stored in original bags in a bin & never had a problem, some is 2 yrs old. Use your jars for other items & vacuum seal them.

      If you don't mind breaking up your sugar....then sure. But if we were to store our sugar in bags in our basement, it would be a rock when we went to use it. We have stored in jars for years and have had zero issues. We have collected plenty of jars over the years. We have a ton. But you're right, if you are short on jars, use what you have for long term canning needs.

    I’m new to storing food. I have a vacuum sealer that I can use. But where do I store them? Is the garage not good? Running out of room in this house.

      No, the garage is not ideal because it doesn't have a consistent temperature with the seasons and the door opening and closing. Generally it is not very dark. The basement is the best but not in the furnace room. Don't put anything directly on a cement floor. The lye from the cement may leach through plastic. Put down a few old stones or bricks and put planks (or a sheet) of wood over those. A pallet if you can find one from a brick or construction company is best. You could try a broom closet and put cleaning supplies in the garage. I hang my broom and mop behind the garage door.

      We wash most in the dishwasher or hand wash in the sink. Nothing special.

      Not silly jars need to be sterilized. I run them through the dishwasher first, then boiling water. Even the seals have to be kept in hot water just before you put them on the jars. Old ones with an X on them can be used for none canned jars you store Tea Bags in. Clasico Spaghetti Sauce makes a quart jar. Run it through the dishwasher first.

      No absorber needed. If you are storing for a long period of time, maybe vacuum seal? We've stored sugar for over a year this way with zero issues.

    Is there any prep work needed for the jars for dry storing? How long would you expect the sugar to be good stored this way? year and 1/2? longer?

      Not really any prep work needed other than making sure the jars are clean. As long as you keep the moisture out, sugar will last forever. It is an easy prep to store, but not easy to keep dry!

      Might be a bit of overkill, but I wash my jars then dry then in the oven. Once cooled, I fill & vacuum seal them.

      @@wazowski6709 They don't need to be dried in the oven. Air drying is fine. Dry foods don't need "sterilization" as there shouldn't be any moisture that'll allow microorganisms to grow. Next, our kitchens are not sterile. One example is that we can make sourdough bread culture from the yeasts in the air of our homes. We don't sterilize the scoops, funnels, spoons, jar lids and such when we're storing dry foods. One more example, is dry beans. After being stored, before we use them, we inspect to pick out any small rocks and rinse them to remove harvest dust. They are not sterile when they go into storage, yet are fine when we're ready to cook them.
      All we need is cool, dark and DRY for best storage conditions for dry foods.
      Hope this helps save a step and save a bit on energy costs too.

    My brown sugar got hard, I took a clean phillips screwdriver and a hammer on on my butcher block, broke it up in pieces, then drug out my old blender, and ground it up and put it in a canning jar, it is finner than normal, but that is ok. Sugar use to come in loaves once upon a time. Don't waste it, grind it up.

      Put a slice of bread on top of the brown sugar and close the container. In a few days the bread will be hard, (throw it away), and the brown sugar will be soft. I didn't think it would work. Trying it made me a believer!

      @@ruthmiller5588 I have one of those clay disc's but don't use dark brown sugar as much as I do other forms. I'll have to try it. The way things are going we are going to have to learn how to make our own Pennicillian, and there are Vids for that. Came from molded bread in the first place.

    I bought some paksh 1 gallon jars but can't find anywhere staying they can be dry baked as the glass may not be strong enough. I would sterilize bit for have any pots large enough to sterilize.

    Vacuum seal bags takes up less room than jars. You can stack on top of each other.

      Don't vacuum seal sugar because it gets hard as a rock and you can't use it. I did and that is what happened. Bad idea to vacuum seal sugar.

    I want to add, those white plastic lids are not air tight & they will let moisture in. Also, on a cheaper note, you can also store sugar in ziplock bags & put into totes or food grade buckets for long term storage as well (you can usually find food grade buckets at the your local deli like a Walmart deli for free or very cheap or can reuse a big pickle jar for free - a lot of glass jars can be reused, some local restaurants might even have some for free too that they used from pickles). 👌🏼

      I’m planning on using Mylar bags and 02 absorbers. I’m new to the long term storage world. I just bought a dehydrator after watching many videos from Heidi on “Rain Country” on CZcams. Look up her videos on storing those things in your question. Her knowledge is mind blowing. I may be doing some canning too but need equipment. Starting out with dehydrating things first.       Nope. We've stored it for months and months with zero issues. If you have a very damp basement, that might be an issue. But we have no issues at all. None.

      You don't need to sterilize unless they have been sitting around for years. Just wash them with regular dish soap or dishwasher.

    Can you use a regular gallon pickle jar you get from the store and store it in that with that lid that came with it? Also how long does the sugar store for?

      The sugar will store forever as long as it stays dry. So it is critical to make sure the lid can seal good. Also where you store it makes a big deal. Having a rubber seal or canning seal works great.

      It should be fine but make sure to absolutely thoroughly clean the jar and the lid and make sure the lid is still in good condition you can then either put an oxygen absorber in there to permanently reseal it or you can leave it as is

      You can use bay leaf, also look to other things to use around house that stops critters from invading...good source if you don't have your own books or info is to take take to library, Go to F.D.A. sites or local county farm bureau ect.

      You can although it isn’t always necessary with highly processed things like granulated sugar you could use an oxygen absorber also if youd like and it will vacuum seal the jar and provent anything from living

      No, there's no need to do anything like that with sugar. Sugar is a natural preservative with an indefinite shelf life as long as it is kept dry. As to flour, that's a different subject. You can freeze it, if you like and if you have a weevil problem. (I've had them in rice, but not in flour, so I don't freeze flour here. ) Next, flour needs to be contained, if you're planning to use a vacuum sealer. Loose flour will be sucked into the pump and cause damage. I put flour into white paper lunch bags, about 2/3rds full. Fold over the top a couple of times. (Secure with a bit of tape to keep it folded, if you need to do so.) Insert the bag, folded top down, into a vacuum seal bag. This keep the flour powder out of the pump.
