    A few weeks ago Slovakia sent all the Mig-29's in their Air Force to Ukraine. It's only a dozen, but they also sent along all the parts and support equipment since they're switching over entirely to F-16's in a year or two. They worked a deal where their neigbors are covering their airspace and fulfilling their NATO commitment. They also sent over an S-300 last April, as well as 4 Mil Mi-17 and 2 Mil Mi-2 helicopters. I'm sure there was some ordinace in there as well.
    As to parts and airframes, when the Soviet Union fell, Ukraine had a few hundred more jets than they could use or crew so they mothballed two thirds of their inventory. If they were stored outside they are probably in pretty rough shape, but any that were in hangers or dry storage should be repairable. There are reports of types they weren't given and shouldn't still have flying missions.

  • @FLJBeliever1776
    @FLJBeliever1776 Před rokem +52

    There's been discussions to actually try to get Ukraine Swedish Fighters instead.
    The Saab Gripen C/D both have Rough Field Capabilities and are designed for operations with highways in mind. They're sufficiently advanced enough that they can give the Russians a major run for their money. More importantly, their designs are simple enough that only a couple of well-trained NCOs are needed to oversee the upkeep of a Gripen with a bunch of Enlisted Conscripts.
    Sweden would probably love to get the Gripen sold and into combat in order to justify their Fighter design and show they are a very capable nation militarily. Ukraine could very well make immediate use of Gripens until they can make safe their airbases again and get teams of qualified F-16 Fighting Falcon technicians trained.
    Let alone pilots. Which would roughly be very similar course training for both aircraft, but one could show up sooner with fewer immediate needs. Then the other comes in and begins to sweep things up.
    Of course, what I'm interested in, is the possibility of Ukrainian F-15 Eagles. As good as the F-16 Viper is, the F-15 Eagle is simply better and for good reasons the Soviets and Russians have feared the F-15 Eagle. To date, not a single Eagle has been shot down by ANY opposing aircraft, much to the Russians annoyance, usually trying to challenge the F-4 Phantom for the title of Best Distributor of Used MiG Parts.
    That's not counting the F-15 being better able to fight Sukhoi Air Superiority Fighters as well.

    • @AnimarchyHistory
      @AnimarchyHistory  Před rokem +23

      Funny you should mention that. I wonder if it will be in my next Ukrainian Air War video
      O.O

    • @FLJBeliever1776
      @FLJBeliever1776 Před rokem +7

      @@AnimarchyHistory - I wonder that too. Given how everything keeps going back and forth.
      It's really a question of just how many Gripens can be made available for Ukraine and the support of spares and weapons as well.
      At the same time, it is a matter of how many F-16s and even F-15s can be assembled.
      I know we have a lot of F-16s, but there are still some older F-15C/Ds in the Boneyard as well. Plus, apparently, a number of F-15A/Bs.
      While I'm not particularly confident of F-15As surviving a fight with the Russian Aerospace Force, the F-15Cs would likely be far more capable.
      Assuming that Moskva doesn't raid its stores of any remaining older generation Aircraft.
      Do they still even have reserves of Aircraft in storage? I know I heard they had a boneyard of their own. But it's not exactly a big talking point like the US Military's consolidated Boneyard.
      On that topic, did any USAF F-15E Strike Eagles wind up in the Boneyard? That would be interesting if some did. Because THAT is a capability to put the hurt on the Russians.
      Of the Aircraft, the world over at this point, that could help Ukraine, as I noted here, the Gripen is the best choice for now. The pilot training will take time, but so too will F-16 Viper training. But maintenance training and preparations for operational bases (be they an actual Airbase or a stirp of road somewhere) would be far easier. To say nothing of the fact that it is a shorter trip for Spare Parts and fresh Ammo to show up, as Sweden is a heck of a lot closer than the USA.
      I also noted you mentioning a formation of a, uh, group of Fighter pilots who would be a like a bunch of tigers with wings flying about if they were to volunteer for Ukraine.
      I would support that. Whole heartedly.

    • @nullc0ntext

    • @FLJBeliever1776
      @FLJBeliever1776 Před rokem +1

      @@nullc0ntext - While there is that, cool doesn't win wars.
      One of the reasons I believe that F-15s are needed in Ukraine is their robust survival capability. They literally can be flown on wing. Israeli pilots found that out the hard way in an accident and brought their one winged Eagle home.
      Another, more critical role, would be the fact that F-15s would have a better chance at fighting Sukhois and intercepting Russian Bombers.
      That would free up the F-16s to hunt Radars and SAMs, provide overwatch, perform ground support, and Recon sweeps. Among other tasks.
      The Gripen would be more useful as a point interceptor. Going after Cruise Missiles that get launched for example or trying to get localized air superiority. Freeing up the Eagles to be long distance Air Superiority Fighters.
      A-10s would hit whatever they can wherever they can. They can also act as observers when a pair of eyes can be more useful than a camera lens. Especially in chaotic, moving battles. Not to mention spraying Tanks and hardpoints guided munitions would need coordinates or a laser to target. They can also mount Rockets, so that large stock can definitely be used up.
      Each tool must have a use. Something they can fulfill.

      Funny how we talk of helping Ukraine fight for it's freedom when obviously we don't even have ours. Thanks, FascistTube. Though in truth some of it isn't CZcams's fault. It's America's ridiculous copyright stranglehold, easily the worst in the world outside of, say North Korea and China. Just to show you HOW bad it is - America is literally the ONLY country in the world that will not be receiving HD DVD recorders from Japan and Korea (or anywhere else). This is because, even though Americans have been recording television with VCRs for half a century, hyper-greedy media execs have decided now that if Americans want to watch their favorite television show whenever they want without sitting through 20 minutes of ads, they'll have to buy the boxed set at the store. If you try to record an HD television show onto a DVD, the signal will be scrambled. You can still record them onto a DVR but that's it. As such, there will be no market for HD DVD recorders here in the US and as such, we're not getting any. Why this is such an insult is that America is the ONLY country that will not be getting them. Because we're the ONLY country with such heavy-handed copyright laws. And we're supposed to be the land of the free? What utter f-ing rubbish that is. Even the third party programs that allow you to record CZcams videos no longer do business in the United States - thanks to our ridiculous pro-fascist copyright laws. If you follow their links, you'll either get a message about how they've discontinued service to the United States due to swarms of lawyers breathing down their necks ... OR ... you just get a dead link. One of them actually does work - for a couple of minutes - until you realize it's stuck and isn't going to go any further. So yeah ... there you go.

    I don't know if Ukraine's number for Russia's losses are that overstated. Coalition losses during the Gulf war were at 7 per 1000 sorties on the first day, and attacking air defense heavy areas like airfields were at 8 per 1000. US statements put Russian sorties at 200 to 400 a day so 2 or 4 planes downed would mean that they were doing as badly as the US and allies vs Iraq. Now having said that, losses fell significantly as air defense was destroyed and less risky missions types began to dominate.
    However to be clear your disbelief has to be that,
    1: Russia was that ineffective at destroying SAMS , Radar and various air defence systems
    OR
    2: Russia continued at this loss rate for months not changing it's strategy for months, in spite of this lack of success
    As Russia is stated to be flying low and mostly attempting to launch weapons from its own airspace 1 can't be true as it failed.
    If they only did as well as the US in the gulf war the losses of Ukraine makes sense. But then we're only arguing if Russian command is that dumb.

And the Russians are managing this with a much smaller force while on the offensive. And the enemy they are doing this against has NATO equipment and training. The Swedish roadbase system was actually more advanced than a few roads.
    Each base had a regular runway and roads where only used for 1-3 secondary runways. The plan was to scramble fighters quickly and get at the enemy before he knew you where there.
    So each base would launch 4 fighters prefferably one from each runway for simultaneous takeoff. Using datalink guidance the fighters could be led to their targets in a heavilly jammed environment.
    There are/where some more fortified bases in sweden though.
    The old central aviation workshop in Arboga had and underground part blasted into granite next to the airport. Saab had an underground workshop that was in use until the early 90's (it's still there but unused).
    F16 F18 F8 F9 and F13 had rock hangars underground, F18 and F8 don't exist anymore and the fields at F9 and F13 are closed leavign only F16 but they have no permanent fighter squadrons (YAY new public management).
    In the 1960's Sweden also bought the Bloodhound surface to air missile to protect the airbases and defend sweden from high altitude targets. The missile was only in service until 1979 leaving a capability gap that's only recently been rectified with the Patriot (similar ranged missiles).
    Sweden being a small country never had enough resources for the military and the air force did not correspond to nato standards. ECM was very limited and exclusive to attack aircraft even Radar warners where only fitted to fighters with the Viggen. The air force focused on mass and high numbers as losses was expected, there was cutting edge technology but only where most needed and the fighter force always had priority.
    Even so the training was realistic with sweden operating a squadron of ECM aircraft to train pilots and GCI to operate in a realistic environment.

    I watched the first one of this exact same video and I'm going to watch the second one the whole video. In part because I really like the information being given and there's enough of it that I have to watch it more than once to actually catch all of it. But I could have done that with the first video or part two of two version a?..... The reason I'm watching this all over again is to give you more watch time you deserve it and the CZcams algorithm needs to be tweaked... For that matter CZcams needs to learn to let real information stay on line

    Good Video and fair analysis apart and I liked the stereotype "russian accent" a good light moment in a fairly heavy video. Just a tip, If you want to analyse the shortcomings of russian platform in details you can look at the SU 30 MKI platform from the IAF and the issues our airforce had to integrate western Avionics and Jammers on a Russian aircraft. As per the information available in the public domain Indian Air force based on their experience in operating western platforms opted to to got French and Israeli Avionic. In the recent pictures shared by IAF the Su 30 is seen with the Litening targeting pod exclusively and for precision targeting its exclusively non russian GPS aided bombs like Spice series. It also looks like that IAF will reduce it dependence on Russian BVR missiles going forward which was indicated with a recent large order of Astra Mark 1 missiles and the focus on its future iterations ie Mark 2 and Mark 3. Just thought to share that. Hopefully it was helpfull.

    One thing to note, BVR combat is beyond visual range, but that just means the planes are beyond visual range. The explosions from a missile hitting is still likely going to be visible if it's within range of A/A missiles

    The Ukrainian pilots are truly unsung heroes of this war. They launched knowing full well that they were horribly outnumbered, both in terms of enemy aircraft and enemy SAM batteries. Yet they launched anyway, struck their targets and are still in the fight. Their accomplishments in defending Ukraine can only be compared to those of the RAF in defending Britain during WW2.

    The US has been able to sustain 2 decades of global operations. Though air combat has been rare. The US has been ably to supply aircraft, pilots and large amounts of guided weapons. And test new systems in operations. Also having successful multinational operations. And constantly developing new technologies. US pilots having more operational experience. Also huge logistical capability. US fighters include one or two generation capabilities. I do not think the Russians understand how the F-35 actually works and it's capabilities and threat. Even among military leaders. And most Russians believing Putin's propaganda.

    A bit of a note on the talk about ARH missiles around 8 - 9 minutes: Missiles like the AIM-120 and R-77 still require the target to be painted for most of the flight path, so they're not quite as good as you make them sound. The AIM-120 for example only sends a few periodic datalink updates before pitbull, and breaking lock prematurely will generally result in a miss if the opponent maneuvers adeptly.
    Of course, lock can be broken relatively early and it opens up tactical possibilities that aren't possible with SARH missiles, but it's not like you can just fire them off and turn around. I mean, you can, but a while ago there was an air exchange between IIRC India and Pakistan where 8 missiles were fired prematurely, resulting in 8 misses.

    My understanding is the Top Gun program had actual Mig29 Su 27 were available to train against and to maintain operational process, NATO avionics replaced the Soviet systems as lack of replacements. This process took years and that knowledge let the Ukraine planes be updated with NATO avionics in a short time, allowing SEAD missions with HARM missiles.

    Splendid and entertaining analysis.
    Just one quick question. You pretty much finish your video with "we need to give them the tools to 'finish the job'"
    Would you plz elaborate what "finishing the job" exactly means and plz don't say something stupid like "win the war". To be more precise, at what point is this war won? When Donbass and Crimea are won back to Ukraine? Which inherently means forcing Russians out of Sevastopol - do you think Russia is going to simply "accept that" and how would you rate the possibility for a nuclear escalation, in case Sevastopol is in fact seriously threatened?

    • @AnimarchyHistory
      @AnimarchyHistory  Před rokem +1

      Victory would be the withdrawal of Russia from all sovereign Ukrainian territory. Which includes Crimea. I would say that Russia would not go nuclear simply because they like living just as much as we do. If Russia loses to the extent that Crimea and the Donbass are liberated, then I think Putin's regime will be finished and they will be forced to sue for terms.
      I am also dubious as to whether the Russian nuclear arsenal is in condition for deployment. At least their silo based weapons. The shorter range Topol's and air launched ones I am more concerned about.
