  • You wanted to see it, so here it is. Unlike Dave's reviews of the Xtra and Energy, this Gossen will be subjected to the same tests as all the meters before it. So you Gossen fan boys best turn the channel.
    "Features in detail Three Connector Jacks with Automatic Blocking Sockets (ABS)((Patented (patent no. DE 10 2005 062 624, US 7,439,725)) All current ranges are implemented via a single connector jack which prevents any possibility of operator error. Beyond this, the automatic blocking sockets prevent incorrect connection of the measurement cables, as well as selection of the wrong measured quantity.
    Danger to the user, the instrument and the device under test resulting from operator error is thus ruled out. Overload Protection The instrument is safeguarded for up to 1000 V in all measuring functions by overload protection. Voltages of greater than 1000 V and current of greater than 10 or 16 A are indicated acoustically. Dangerous contact voltages are indicated when the 1 kHz lowpass filter is activated."

    I've just discovered your channel, and I would like thank you for amazing content. Came when was searching for a reliable multi-meter, ended with just with browsing everything and enjoying every minute of it. Testing done right, you don't see it anymore even in the most companies building industrial equipment. Thank you.

    BTW, I have attempted to keep Metrawatt informed. I provided them with the details of what will be in part 2. Basically, I want to know if this is a defective meter and needs to be returned for service. Sadly there has been no response.

    • @lykortos4827

      I cannot understand why Gossen behaved like this; they must have a terrible PR policy.

    • @joesmith-je3tq
      @joesmith-je3tq  Před 3 lety +2

      @@lykortos4827 I believe some of the fault is with the US distributor who out right lied to Gossen about our discussion. That pretty much set the tone moving forward. Oddly enough, if you look up this meter, you will find they changed the name of the product. I wrote them to see if they had made any improvements to the hardware but they would not respond. Someone wrote me how Gossen had actually addressed the problems by adding a shield like I had shown however, I have no confirmation of that. Not at all what I was expecting based on all the hype surrounding the brand.

    Morning Mr Smith
    Thank you for the videos, after comparing meter specs.. I decided to purchase the brymen BM 257s.....
    In my line of work as a Electrical Engineer.. I do both electrical repairs in residential environments and do also car electrical customizations this should work perfect for me..
    Thanks..
    One more thing..
    You calibrate meters as I see.... Can I send you mine as needed... Yes of course, I have to pay you... Lol....
    Let me know...

    • @joesmith-je3tq
      @joesmith-je3tq  Před 5 lety

      I do not calibrate meters, nor do I offer any services or products for sale. I also don't accept donations. There are many cal labs in the US if that is something you really require, perhaps for your ISO cert.
      I have not looked at the 257s but it seems like a nice little meter. All of the Brymen products I have looked at have done very well in my tests.

    • @brianthompson1138
      @brianthompson1138 Před 4 lety

      I also purchased a BM257s partly based on Joe's reviews. It has become my work multimeter, keeping arcade games and pinball machines alive and well.
      I liked that meter so much that I turned around and ordered a BM829s for my home. As far as I can tell, the BM829s is very similar to the BM869s, except that it is 10,000 count.
      Very happy with both.

      Okay, now I just noticed this appeared a tad bit earlier at ~16:57. I'm still probably not catching it early enough in the video. Eager to see the voltage transient test and high current testing in the upcoming tests.
      EDIT: Ah! I think I now see it ~09:27! I just had to watch it about 3 more times in its entirety. My apologies as I was one of those BSEE students who had to study 4-5 hours for every 1 hour of instruction (learning disability).

    • @sepertude

      btw those lower Metrahit models autoranges a lot faster because of less ranges to go through.

    • @joesmith-je3tq
      @joesmith-je3tq  Před 7 lety +1

      Personally, I was hoping more viewers would have voted for the HIOKI because I have a good feeling that meter would survive with no drama. It's still missing the two TC inputs which is why I went with the Brymen in the first place.
      This is the slowest autorange meter I have ever seen. My antique HP34401A is well under a second. But the Gossen manual did state 8 seconds so if someone did not read the manual before buying, that's on them. I had a good idea what to expect. Still it was a bit of a shock to see it really was that slow.

    • @sepertude
      @sepertude Před 7 lety

      I think this is more for labs or scientistic use where user does not switch ranges very often... They would measure voltage for hours and use computer to capture data.. That lower model would be more interesting for us...

    04:50 : You can't argue with the build quality of this thing...
    05:50 : I don't understand why meter manufacturers make it such a pain to replace the batteries esp. on cheap meters. The Gossen is quite a bit better in that respect, having a separate, easily accessible compartment. I hate those meters that a) require a 9v battery and b) you need sth. like 10 mins to replace it because you have to dismantle the whole meter in order to access it.10:40 : What is the maximum temperature the Gossen can measure?
    11:06 : I've noticed that on most meters when the backlight is on you can't necessarily see what position your rotary switch is in. The Gossen has a slightly more visible dial but still not enough. It would be good if they had backlighting on the entire instrument panel, including the lead sockets. Alternatively, as small external light illuminating the panel would do the job.
    12:00 : What is the reason the meter takes so long to settle? Isn't it a good thing, i.e. regarding precision, that it takes longer rather than shorter time?

    • @joesmith-je3tq
      @joesmith-je3tq  Před 5 lety

      I just noticed this post was flagged at spam. This meter has one of the worse battery life of the meters I have looked at. It has support for an external pack for that reason. You better be able to change out the batteries fast because you will be doing it often!
      I like your idea on having a backlight for the rotary switch. I've never seen it.
      Many of the meters I have looked at are slow to settle and auto range. This meter is so unstable out of the box, forget precision. You can't use it. Move your hand near it and off into the weeds it goes.
      I wouldn't take much to improve this meter but this is something Gossen should have done, not a customer.

  • @zx8401ztv
    @zx8401ztv Před 7 lety

    The gossen is a meter that dave would be kissing, so i did expect it to perform better than all of the others, but the resistance did take a week and a half to sort itself out.:-(
    The 300khz test result just seemed unimpressive.
    And the mad field effect of your hand with 60hz on it really supprised me, it's almost like there is no sheilding in it.
    I don't get that from my £5 specials lol.
    The display was tiny, i know it was due to it's resolution, but was it not possible to continue with another line showing the remainder of the reading, perhaps im mad :)

    • @joesmith-je3tq
      @joesmith-je3tq  Před 7 lety

    • @joesmith-je3tq
      @joesmith-je3tq  Před 7 lety +5

      The term rich is relative. The uneducated in this country with a one pack a day habit will spend $3000 a year to destroy their lungs. I have had friends die from lung cancer. People have drug habits that raise the cost of destroying your body by a significant amount. My meter testing is well under a pack a day habit. We all have choices. The meters I damage do little to effect my friends and family in a negative way. It is nothing like watching the people you know destroy themselves with their own bad habits. So don't preach to me about how I use my resources.

    • @Gooberslot
      @Gooberslot Před 7 lety

      I'm not preaching to you. I'm not sure how you even got that from my statement. The thought that I should be telling you how to spend your money never even entered my mind.

    • @joesmith-je3tq
      @joesmith-je3tq  Před 7 lety +6

      That's good because there is nothing worse than people who go around preaching about how I choose to spend the money I earn working at my job, because they have no money after they spent theirs on alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, cable TV, cell phones, video games, $100,000 watches (from the last EEVBLOG videos). It's all about choices and for now I am having some fun benchmarking a few meters. Could these resources be used for something more productive? I am sure that the vast majority of the population would say yes. But for the few people who are interested in seeing this data, you are more than welcome to follow along at my expense.
