Thanks for checking out my first CZcams guitar lesson. In this video I take a brief look at some alternative jazz chords to spice up a blues in G. I have included on-screen chord boxes and slowed down the progression so that you can hopefully work out what's going on with ease.

Blues/Dominant 7s have been a mystery for my. Everything l come across is a basic l, lV, V. Finally a lesson with some meat to it!
So soft playing, without pick and so many chords done here, I really like that information, very nice sharing, thanks so much.
Love this tutorial. Great song. Great progression and rhythm. THANKS! And thank you for including the chord diagrams across the bottom! Such a helpful reference while playing. Please do more just like this.
Wonderful lesson. I like the chords on the screen. I like that you didn't race through and were mindful of us newbies. Thank you.
I'm trying to learn the chords but I keep getting distracted by how beautiful that guitar is
So smooth sounding and I can use all those jazz chords I learned years ago, thanks.
Very useful lesson and very nicely presented. Thanks much Camilo!

Cool choice of chords and use of the Sus voicings. Loving the use of G#m leading to the IV. The cherry on the cake for this video would be to mention also the roman numerals ! But its perfect as it is ! Great material !

Hey glad you like it. Thanks for commenting :)
good work yo
Thank u
could you do a detail analysis of this chord progressions that would be of much help, looking forward to it
this is it! Forget all the others tutorials :-)
Haha, I appreciate you saying that Frank!
This is great thanks
No worries :)
woow super nice thakns
Great work and lesson thank you. You have my like and subscribe! Just a small point, it would be great if you talk over the chords in the second half of the video. So as you play the G13 just mention that a) it is a G13 so we can reference to the chord chart and B) maybe which other positions it can be played in. Overall a refreshing lesson thank you
Amazing. I was mostly only familiar with the I7 - IV7 - V7 chord progression in a Blues.
Is it okay to improvise over this the same way you would improvise over a regular and plain I7 - IV7 - V7?
I wonder how and why these complex chord substitutions work...
beauty sound.
Thank you!
Thank you so much
It's my pleasure!
groovy tone
Ric Rodgers
Can a tone be groovy?
Groove relating to measure or rhythm or beat
I love this lesson. You know what would be super great ? If you now published a video which describes ideas on how to lead over this exact comp arrangement.
Ah ok. I'll bare that in mind Vince :)
One more thing, I have a tele as well, but how do you get that wonderful jazz tone out of your tele? Ok, you use your thumb, but what else do you do? My tele only sounds like a tele. Thanks ! Your'e doing a great job!
Anyone with a Django Reinhardt picture can't be bad!! Nice lesson!!
Haha, cheers!
By the way love your use of a tele, rather than a traditional hollow body. I am right now agonizing over a Strat or a custom made Tele as my number one guitar....people like you help this process! Peace to you mate!
Very cool! Been lookin for something like this. Do you have those chord diagrams on a pdf or jpeg file. I would love to have them. Good jazz chords are so hard to find.
me encanta... thanks so
i like it,
Thank you Camilo. Really helpful. Very well presented...I've been messing with Stormy Monday (in G) and this just extended my chord vocab considerably. Be interesting to see you take on some slow blues standards.
+autinspare No problem man thanks a lot for your comment. Let me know if you have any suggestions for blues standards :)
+Camilo James well with a few adjustments the chord voicings in your video work well with Stormy Monday and Texas Flood. It has kept me busy everyday mixing and matching and playing with rhythms . . just can't put the guitar down!
+autinspare Yeh I know the feeling :p I've always liked Texas Flood so maybe I'll do a lesson on that some time
nice
Wow 100,000 views! That's crazy, never would have expected that. Thanks so much to everyone for all the views, comments and likes. Don't forget to check out part 2 to this lesson here: czcams.com/video/5-G07JWOGOg/video.html If this popularity keeps up I'll have to get working on part 3!
is it possible to create a sheet of music with all these chords on it?
the theory aspect behind this would be nice!
Got some theory lessons planned for the near future :)
nice chords dude
Cheers!
Great Sounds...love that soft smoooth jazz Camilo. Can you tell me, is there a way to print out the chords so that I can learn and follow. Would greatly appreciate it and you have a new follower here in Charleston SC
Hey thanks a lot for the support Ed :) Info for chord charts and tabs is in the description
Camillo! Can you show us how you planned the progression? It would make a great Music theory exercise!
Got some theory lessons in the pipeline :)
how long have you played and studied jazz such a beautiful musical form, jazz players just amaze me with their chord mastery crazy fingerings and just over all imagination on the instrument.
Hey thanks a lot! I would have to say pretty much for as long as I can remember :)
awesome love the guitar it is the best hobby when I play all the worlds troubles go away until I stop keep pluckin brother Kirk Out/
Very impressive work out. Greetings from Italy!
Piacere, thank you!
Camilo, in my head I keep hearing some subtle blues licks played along with this, like partial scales with some nice bends. Was wondering if you also hear that & if you've experimented with the blues side that could accompany you?
+Paul Hamrick Yeh absolutely, I spend a lot of time exploring blues/jazz-blues improvisation. I'm sure I'll get round to doing a lesson on that one day :)
Nice progressions! What program are you using to show the chords? thanks...
Thanks man! I use Guitar Pro 6 for all my editing and arranging :)
New subscriber here very helpful lesson
Thanks a lot!
Your welcome
Hi! Thanks for the video, i'm iniciating on jazz stuff, but when the chords tab appear G13add9 is not actually an G11add9 ??
Hey no probs Bruno :) actually no the chord is made up of G (root) F (7th) B (3rd) E (13th), so this is a G13 chord, but it also has an A note (9th) on top to make it a G13add9. Hope this helps
how is the up and down strumming?
Camilo James : how are you? Great lesson, I got a doubt, how is the theory on this progression? I whant to understand to playing in all keys . Thanks so much in Advanced
Hey there Matias, this progression can be transposed to anywhere on the fretboard, in all keys so just move the chords up or down and have fun experimenting!
Nice embellishment to a otherwise straight forward progression. Do you have any TAB for the chord changes, because I notice that you are "vamping" at some points and it would be nice to have the TAB for a better understanding of where the guitar player would be when they go off to do a vamp. nice work!
Hey thanks! No tab I'm afraid but all the changes are shown on screen, so maybe just follow along to get a feel for the rhythm :)
Show
Where can i get this model from Fender?
nice :-)
great vid alot of good chord comping hope you make ,more very nice if u
would add all the differant scales you can play to it thank you arppegios section asking alot good work ...
Thanks for your comment! I will definitely make a video like that in the future :)
I am new to guitar in general and jazz guitar in particular but have developped the practice of always analyzing a chord's tonalities when one pops up with a shape I am not familiar with and don't understand why you call your first and tenth chord diagram a G13. The notes played are f,b,e,g ... is it an inversion f being played in the bass and the top note, g being the root with the e being your 13? Please enlighten me as I have only been studying jazz guitar for 2 weeks and guitar + music for 7-8 months...Thanks a bunch, for this and other videos.
Hey no problem it's my pleasure :) To answer your question it's simply a G13 chord with the root on top and dominant 7th on the bottom. From top (tonally) to bottom: G (root), E (13), B (maj 3rd), F (dom 7th). Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Yes, thanks for the confirmation.
Camilo James More importantly, thanks for the lesson as this is exactly what I wanted to add to my practice routine.
Great video....it's one thing playing a progression like this....but why does it work ? What is the theory behind the chord choice ?
Hey thanks! There's nothing much to it really, it's a standard I, IV, V blues in B flat with a bit of chord leading going on with the substitutions to almost give the progression a melody line and some more interesting jazz tones. Hope this helps :)
I think it is worth noting that the G13 played at the 8th fret and the Em7b5 played at the7th are note for note the same as the top four strings of a G13th and a C9 played at the third fret. In fact in an ensemble situation it seems likely that the bass would be playing a C against the Em7b5 so in reality it would be a C9. Even in a 1 6 2 5 turn around I don't think you would use the Em7b5 as the E7#9 sounds better. I think jazz can look like to much of a mystery at times :)
keep drinking
hello Camilo... i would like to know which pickups do you use in that telecaster... im about to built a telecaster and this is just the sound im lookin for.... thanks and excuse me for my english.... i dont use english so much.....
Hey roberto :) well they are actually just the one's that came with the guitar, I didn't switch them out or anything. I know they are specially voiced for that Fender Select Series 2013 model, but I don't have much more info than that I'm afraid
thanks camilo i will try to find some information about this series.. Im looking for a tele sound.. I´m begining a self made guitar and im tryng to get this tele sound.. thanks again
What type of Fender Telecaster Thinline is that. It is a beautiful guitar.
Cheers, its a 2013 select series thinline tele
