I'm no expert, but I am a student of Sun Tzu. My guess this started out as a feint. A distraction while Ukraine plots or engages in an oblique attack somewhere else. Then they got inside Russia and found they were a pushover, so they started rampaging around causing as much damage as they could. I'll be curious to see what happens in the next month or two.

Russia's problem is most of their forces are in Ukraine leaving their own country vulnerable to attack.
This is strategic, where you gain several things with one move. It positions Ukraine differently on the battlefield and it makes Russia move troops around they don’t want to relocate from the south. It also has a huge effect within Russia.

Putin is correct that this incursion is partially about improving Ukraine's negotiating position. (Of course it also forces Russia to divert resources away from their ongoing offensive.) Some version of a ceasefire will be negotiated this winter. The facts on the ground matter in such talks and Ukraine is trying its best to change the narrative from what we've seen in recent months.
I would not give my life over for a negotiation. Why would you? Ukraine needs to win.
