HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series is back for its second season and in the fifth episode, both sides of the conflict deal with the aftermath of Rook’s Rest. King Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) has survived, but he’s grievously injured and may never fully recover. Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) and Aemond's (Ewan Mitchell) plan was a success in that they killed Rhaenys (Eve Best) and her dragon Meleys. It also changed the war in ways that will never be undone.
The Blacks' King Consort Daemon (Matt Smith) continues to be haunted by his dreams at Harrenhal. He seems to be developing designs of taking the power he’s gathering for himself rather than supporting Rhaenyra’s claim. Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin) continues to get into his head and presents herself as a champion for the people.
Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) mourns the loss of Rhaenys and realizes that she’ll need more dragon riders to defeat Aemond and Vhagar. Jace (Harry Collett) manages a diplomatic win by securing the Crossing and convincing House Frey to bend the knee to Rhaenyra. Baela (Bethany Antonia) steps up to convince her mourning grandfather Corlys (Steve Toussaint) to become Hand of the Queen.
Alicent (Olivia Cooke) realizes there is no place for her after being passed over as Regent. The Green Council picked Aemond to become Prince Regent and his mother is worried about what this might mean for the Realm.
    S2.E5 ∙ Regent
As the Greens consider how to fill a void on Aegon’s (Tom Glynn-Carney) Council, Daemon (Matt Smith) tries to persuade the Brackens to bend the knee.

Not the strongest episode of the season but still a lot of interesting stuff happening with characters like Aemond, Baela, and Jace. The sound design was great. I thought Alicent's breathing drowning out everything else in that scene was perfect, and love how you can just always hear some dragon noises in the background when people have quiet conversations at Dragonstone. Really like the end and looking forward to the search for dragon riders. Daemon’s really getting lost in it at Harrenhal, I imagine there will be plenty of surprises for Alfred Broome when he gets there. Let me know what you think.

no that is not true and I have heard this argument before. One could speculate that war would have still broke out after renerha became queen. For the series it's definitely a weaker episode but a weaker episode of HOTD is better than 95% of other series in my opinion. This series (and property/universe) is generally at its best when there is a lot of talking, character work, world building. The battles are just icing on an already delicious cake.
I do wonder though, what happened to Harrold Westerling Kingsguard played by Graham McTavish. I would love to see his return to the story somehow, even if it's just to give him a nice send off.

I don’t see there being much ambiguity that Eamond was gunning for Eagon specifically. The scene for me definitely seemed to be his effort at king and kinslaying. I don’t know why people see it as ambiguous. I absolutely believe he knew it was his opportunity to take the throne and he took a shot. Seems like even Cristian knows that and is just reticent to make such an inflammatory accusation publicly. He also has to know that in conspiring with Eamond behind Eagon’s back he opened that door and failed his one job: Protect the king.

I knew that Daemon was dreaming about his first love. So why was I shocked that he was dreaming about his mother?
I love that Cole pulled the "it is the order of things" reverse draw 4 Uno cards on Alicent. She forgot that Cole is not her enforcer or pet. She should have learned that when she ordered him to take one of Rhaenrya's sons' eye. Cole was only sworn to protect her but now his first duty is to the Prince Regent as Hand of the King; It doesn't matter who rides him. He won't even tell Alicent what he saw Aemond do next to a wounded Aegon., justice nor temperance.

This was IMO the weakest of the episodes, too much chit-chat, hope it all pays off in the end tho.
The scenes at Rhaenyra's council are all the same every week, they argue, she gets mad no one listen to her or provide valid feedback, rinse/repeat next week. Its exhausting. Same with the Greens, but at least there, we have tension which makes up for it.
Final thought: Ewan Mitchell has a natural villain's face. He has pixel-by-pixel the same face as the Joker from the animated series! You read it here first: he WILL play the Joker down the line in one of the 634x DC reboots and he's actually gonna kick a$$!!!

@@scottwooledge6387 Unfortunately we're at a part of the book where rhaenyra and alicent don't really do much and it's heavily focused on supporting characters that either weren't introduced yet or have been cut entirely. But the show has to come up with stuff for them to do because you can't really have your 2 main characters disappear while still being alive and unfortunately some of what they've come up with is slow, boring, repetitive and stupid.
