Thank you for using your platform and this topic to put into perspective the challenges women face trying to ESCAPE abusive relationships. At 18 I had the unfortunate experience of being in an abusive relationship with a man 8 years older than me who kidnapped me AFTER beating me up. I had a broken relationship with my mom, no access to enough money to flee, knew nothing about shelters and no father, uncles, brothers or protective men in my life I could call on to SCARE this man away. These are the things abusers look for when selecting their victims. I never sought out relationships with other men to SAVE me from those situations bc I didn't want my mess to cause harm to others. I played my position as I'm sure Cassie did bc when your nursing a black eye or busted lip your also wondering if the abuser will kill you if you say or do something else. My abuser did not hit me until AFTER I broke up with him which was even more shocking bc for 4 years there had never been even a shove. So when you say abusive men don't want to risk getting into a battle with another man - that is true most times, but not always the case with abusers who are feared by others like my abuser. My abuser also lied to everyone about us being broken up to get people to spy on me and also justify assaulting me when he learned about me going on a date. Its bad enough women being abused feel trapped, and even worse when the abuser tears down your character to manipulate others to do their dirty work. MEN... sometimes your abusive buddies will tell you their woman is cheating on them to save face after a woman breaks up with them. Don't encourage them to get even and don't help your friend spy on the woman as I'm sure people did with Cassie. My abuse started after my break up when one of his friends saw me on a date and ran to my abuser with the news. My abuser found out who the guy was, beat him up, then lured me out for a conversation to see if I would consider getting back together - only to assault and kidnap me. When I convinced him to let me go I had to quit my job and move far away with a girlfriend who was kind enough to help me disappear from anyone who knew me and him as a "couple". Starting over somewhere far away was my only escape, but think about how hard that would be for Cassie with a public figure like Diddy as an ex behind the scenes possibly trying to sabotage everything you might do. LADIES... pay attention to red flags like controlling behavior, possessiveness, angry outbursts and blatant disrespect of others. Listen to stories they share about past relationships, and pay attention when you hear patterns of them crying victim and never doing anything wrong. YOUNG LADIES... be weary of older men who take interest in extremely young women and no interest in women their age bc abusers always look for the path of least resistance!
