  • Join Tanya Charlton as she walks teachers and parents through the fundamentals of teaching a lesson from the Memoria Press "Famous Men Series". This video covers the best practices for teaching "Famous Men of Rome", "Famous Men of Greece", "Famous Men of the Middle Ages", and "Famous Men of Modern Times" lessons.
Why study history through its famous men? Haaren and Poland answer in their preface [from Famous Men of Modern Times]: “The study of history, like the study of a landscape, should begin with the most conspicuous features. Not until these have been fixed in memory will the lesser features fall into their appropriate places and assume their right proportions. In order to attract and hold the child’s attention, each conspicuous feature of history presented to him should have an individual for its center. The child sees himself as this individual. It is not Romulus or Hercules or Caesar or Alexander that the child has in mind when he reads, but himself, acting under the prescribed conditions. Prominent educators, appreciating these truths, have long recognized the value of biography as a preparation for the study of history and have given it an important place in their scheme of studies.”

This was great! Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
I did Famous Men of Rome with my 5th grader last year and ended up spacing each weekly lesson out between 5 days - I didn’t see how she could master the material without a daily review. This ended up taking up a lot of time every day and I regret not sticking to the recommendation of keeping this subject to once a week.
Is mastering the Famous Men series and passing the tests truly possible with one hour a week? I will try and attempt it for Middle Ages this fall.
