  • I’ve been making these mask to donate to frontline Healthcare providers and First Responder. These masks do not protect them from covid19 but they’re better than none or having to wear the same soiled mask all week due to the mask shortage.
A filter is highly recommended. If filters are not available, then I would use something breathable like a coffee filter or you can even fold your kitchen napkins and place inside the pocket. Pockets are intended to be hidden and worn against the face. Below are measurements to two different sizes. Medium size are for the average size person and Large are for those big sexy men in uniform. They add great coverage over their surgical mask or n95.
My orders from the frontline staffs and first responders were getting heavy and I needed more manpower. Luckily, I had volunteers to help sew but I couldn’t find a video that showed how I wanted it. It was difficult to explain over the phone. Time is valuable to me right now and I wanted to save some unnecessary steps and speed up the process if we’re gonna have to “mask” produce these. After making so many mask all day everyday, I figured it out and got it down to a science. Don’t forget to watch my latest video on how to make the paper templates. You can also download the printable templates.
This video was intended to show my volunteers but I hope it helps everyone else. For kids, I would do 6.5”x 14” with 5 or 6” elastics (adjust accordingly to your child) Use the medium pleat pattern for this mask but with two pleats instead of three.
Thank you for watching. I hope you all stay safe and healthy.
    You will need the following:
    8x15” Medium or 9x16” Large 100% Cotton Fabric or (Medium 21cm x 38cm) (Large 23cm x 41cm)
    Two 7” Elastics (18cm)
Twist ties or pipe cleaners (approx. 4 in) (10cm)
    Scissors
    Pen
    Ruler
    Clips
    Paper template
Piece of velcro (keeps the needle always ready to go and reduce the need for overusing the thread)

I’ve been making the shaped mask, cutting out takes at least half an hour. Then sewing and finishing off took ages. I decided yesterday to change to this style as I was constantly dreading doing them so kept putting them off. This looks so quick and easy, and very simple. Thank you so much, the Velcro idea is genius.

Same here. I thought it was a piece of felt which i guess you could also use. The best thing for me is that the thread doesn’t pull up and out of the needle which does happen every once in a while. This locks it in place and really saves thread. Great idea Kim

@@KimsKitchenAffair Wow Kim!! I salute you for your brilliance! Undoubtedly the best diy mask tut on line esp bonus points for the great tip about the velcro which i have had in my home for years and have not used. I bet you would come up with a dozen uses for velcro. I have a question - wont the needle be damaged if it pierces the velcro? What is the purpose or the velcro? i am a novice sewer (yikes 'sewer'?!!!") and not exactly sure if it is to hold the thread in place .. some have said it prevents thread wastage .. i can understand that . I see you still use a scissors to snip off .. so is it to prevent that long tail of thread that happens after we cut the thread against the side thread snipper on the machine? Subscribing because I think you're brilliant and willing to share your secrets. Thank you so much

I just keep turning it over and over as I use it, and it keeps you from getting your needle unthreaded, and from having to leave long tails and wasting of your thread!😁🧵

Keep taking care of each other. ❤️

@@lindakazsals8858 It saves thread. Just slip the velcro under the needle when you are done with a section. Cut the thread between the velcro and the material, then you don't have to pull the thread way out to cut it. Keep the velcro under the needle until the next piece is ready to sew. Have you ever cut the thread too short and it came out of the needle? This prevents that.

I also agree with these comments... This one is by far, the best, most easy-to-follow instruction for making these masks! I want to add, floral wire and things like that have been extremely difficult to find in my area, so I have been using the plastic coated paper clips for the nose part. Even the small ones, you can cut them in half and make 2 out of that one, just remember to fold in the ends so you don't get poked. Thank you for making this easy video!

Thanks a lot: I tried several patterns and watched a lot of videos for producing masks but I think your's really the best. It's easy to sew, you have the opening for the filter and the possibility to put in the pipe cleaner or something else. I just made two modifications: I I left the wire tunnel open and folded the mask in another way. Thanks again from Djibouti. Stay at home!

Excellent use of time and craftsmanship, thank you! As a quilter, we use the "starters" and "enders" before and after much like you use the Velcro piece. I've upped it a bit by sewing scrap pieces of fabric together, put them in a small box to square up and put together a quilt after my mask making days are over. It will solidify this time with a scrap quilt. Again, thank you for posting. This video is a game changer from all the masks I've been making. :) Peace and be safe!

The people I have given the masks to have loved the idea of the cloth ties instead of the elastic because you can adjust to any size /shape face, even children and they don't wear out/ streatch like elastic does.

I think it might be the title - it says done in five minutes, but for majority of people it takes plenty of time and nerves, especially for those, who have not much experience - like me :D Actually it took me several hours to make a few masks (of different construction than these) - you usually need to search your home through to find a piece suitable material, understand how it all works, fight with pleads and rubbers, things don´t go always smooth... Those people probably expected something very easy :)

My mom is a quilter and she usually stitches 1.5" squares together (cut from her scraps) as leaders/enders while she sews her other projects. She ends up with an entire scrap quilt top every few months! It would probably slow you down if you're trying to mass produce masks like these, but useful in the future!
