      I think almost anything that connects to this would also connect to a windows tablet with a dongle. Granted built-in ports are amazing. Those 19Wh of battery capacity would be a pain even with a low power cpu and a small screen though .

    • @davidg5898

      I don't think it would suit for field work.
      The display isn't bright enough for outdoor daytime use. It has vents large enough for dust/dirt (and small insects) to become an issue. It would overheat (Lauri wasn't running a heavy load and was indoors and he showed how hot it was already getting). You'd also want longer battery life and/or replaceable battery in the field.
      There are ruggedized small laptops specifically made for field science that include lots of connectivity (including serial ports for older equipment). They cost more than this thing, but meet the needs of the field.

    Someone in a photography group on Facebook recommended this thing a little while ago.
    Not for image editing or any other proper application, but for backing up files on the go. With all the I/O it has you can easily plug in multiple card readers and USB drives to make backups of your files through the Windows Explorer. If you are on a proper trip with the goal to take thousands of shots and videos then this is a great option to check all your files with a tiny PC without the need to take a laptop with you.

    I've got a rather unique use case that I think this might be perfect for. I play keytar in rock bands. Originally, I just plugged into the MIDI input of a rack module, but a little over a decade ago I got my first tablet PC and started running VST plugins off that instead with a few USB pedals. It works great and I can travel light, but there's a little setup time in the beginning as I pull everything out of a bag and plug it all up just right. Lately I've been toying with the idea of putting together a pedalboard like a guitarist might use for effect pedals, but mine would hold all of my USB control pedals and a mini PC, but the problems I'm still figuring out is how to control the PC overall and what to do if the power gets unplugged. This thing has the built in touch screen which would be enough to load up my VST host software and pick the starting song, and the battery would keep the thing going so it doesn't have to reboot if it's unplugged for a bit. I'm sure it's not what it was designed for, but I might have to get one and try it out!

I imagine it would require some optimizations for windows but I would sure love to give it a...Gole? hah!

  • @VectorRoll

    I would mainly connect this to my 3D Scanners to make them more portable and an all-in-one handle unit where I don't need to be wired to a large laptop. It would be perfect for that.
    I would also use it to connect to some 3D Printers, CNC Machines, and Laser Cutters. I do not run them next to or near my Main PC where I do all my work on the files for them. I have to usually transfer the files to them either directly or to another smaller weaker PC next to them. Only the devices that have a built in WiFi upload feature would not need this, but most of my older devices don't.
    I could think of a few other odd case ideas as well that require a small portable pc like this but I could go on for a while describing them. :P

    I tried the Gole2 and returned it. Kept the original Gole1 (J4125 at 15v).
    The Gole2 overheats and throttles CPU way too easily, even with the fans. Was not worth it for my application (low latency audio processing). Kinda frustrating but Im happy to say the original Gole works as expected and doesnt throttle.

    • @bflmpsvz870
      @bflmpsvz870 Před 19 dny +1

      I had it opened and it seems that heat management is not very well solved in it. I suggested the manufacturer to change design and use a double-bottomed metallic frame as heatsink, so only the back of it does not overheat crazily while recharging. Also I think that the charger module is not designed optimally and produces excessive heat. So far I have not received response.

    • @jasonzdora
      @jasonzdora Před 19 dny

      @@bflmpsvz870 Yep! I didnt even get to the recharging point as I simply returned it after some cursory tests that showed throttling while in use (unacceptable for this kind of device).
      The Gole2 has fans but it still overheats. Definitely a flawed design. Hopefully they (or someone else) do something with ARM at some point. It would be much cooler and more powerful.

    • @bflmpsvz870
      @bflmpsvz870 Před 18 dny

      @@jasonzdora I really think its just the charging module as it gets really hot during charging cycle. That can be fixed I think by optimizing voltage drop on its input. Other than that, having a fully blooded compact Windows PC with human input output in your pocket, that gives a whole lot of options and applications. It works perfectly on my portable DSP with 24bit 48Khz fibre optic toslink output.

    • @jasonzdora
      @jasonzdora Před 18 dny +1

      @@bflmpsvz870 I gotcha. Youre talking about the Gole2 internal power heat management and charging PSU being a problem. Im talking about their CPU getting throttled when I push the system with low latency audio processing. It wouldnt surprise me if they are related.
      The Gole1 didnt have throttling issues which is probably due to the smaller/slower CPU not creating as much heat. So even though its weaker its better because it doesnt randomly throttle itself. You know how much CPU you have to play with in the 1st gen GOLE and it doesnt suddenly throttle itself to cool the CPU, causing crackles and noise for low latency audio applications.

    I've been looking for a good review of this device ever since it was released last November 2023.
    I am very interested since encountering the HiGole 1 Pro but held off from buying it because of known super heating issues. I needed the review to check if the HiGole 2 Pro was able to address the heating issue... seems not so much.
    Use case for me is when I am on site and needed a small form factor just like a 5" phone to check on things in parallel with on site work.

    I would definitely use that with my ATEM mini in a livestreaming context out in the field. I would prefer something like this over a laptop (I hate laptops). I've already built a rig using a mac mini (running propresenter) but this windows box would also come in handy in my kit for a variety of reasons. However this unit isnot powerful enough. I will use a MinisForum MS-01 with external monitor instead. It will be nice when Windows 11 running on ARM becomes commonplace and there are enough apps supporting arm. Then perhaps a box like this with buil-in screen will become practical.

      Do people have like, negative digits imagination? Mini PC's and clients are not only popular but kinda booming right now, and this fulfills the same niche while adding at minimum a touchscreen to work as a touchpad. HOW can this equate to not having a purpose? Marketplace options. Mango instead of peach.
      Or yeah, Thinkpad docking stations, those exist. Just slap a PC inside one and it works standalone with all these enhancements you'd get the dock for. MS opened up a program for these copypaste windows OS about a decade ago making it possible to just PUT a Windows in there with about the same effort as pirating it. So a bunch of commercial Chinese businesses did exactly that.
      Makes more sense than Gaben in his Elon Musk era wanting to influence the market with Steam Deck and 1/4 of sales of the Wii U. Its like asking why would anyone ride a horse when wagons exist, and you get to reinvent the wheel but it MUST. HAVE. WHEELS, for some crazy obsessive reason.

Of course it could work blazing fast if not full blown OS, but I guess the point of this thing is access to the Windows software and device drivers. ...yeah I know, definition of a 'cyber-deck', but just like SteamPunk isn't just taking an old watch apart and gluing the gears to something, for me the concept of a cyberdeck is a functional digital tool you refine and carry with you, constantly evolving as the usecase does, I'm wary of saying cyberdeck cos suddenly it 'needs' to be in a pelicase with RGB with a bluetooth keyboard hotglued to the case.
