  • Sometimes, actors have a hard time building up the amount of hatred they’re supposed to have for another actor’s character, but Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss had no such problem. The two men were the stars of the 1991 Frank Oz comedy, What About Bob?, and apparently all of that animosity we saw on screen between their characters was quite real. It may have led to good comedy, but it did not lead to a good relationship between the two actors, as Dreyfuss has continued to tell the story of the troubled production in the decades since the comedy hit movie screens.
    Let’s take a look at all the bizarre details of why Richard Dreyfuss can’t stand Bill Murray.

    I was a uniformed NYC cop on duty at the St. Patrick's Day Parade in 1980, when Bill Murray buttonholed me to be his involuntary dupe in a little skit he decided to "go public" with. He came across the street wearing an worn old high school varsity jacket, with what appeared to be a pint bottle of whiskey hanging out of his pocket. He was playing the part of a shallow Irish-American drunk for the crowd behind me on the sidewalk and using me as part of his little pantomime. Up until then I had been a Bill Murray fan, and admittedly, as the son of Irish immigrants, I had felt some pride in his success as a fellow Irish-American. I didn't appreciate his "drafting me" into his little skit, one in which I was supposed to "relate" with his dialogue, i.e., "Did Pat Moynihan come up yet", etc. It wasn't that he wasn't witty. He was actually pretty "cutting edge" in his caricature of a certain "type" of "shallow Irish drunkard", that IS out there. No, what burned me was that this "act" of his was what he decided to bring to the St. Patrick's Day Parade that day. It wasn't television, it was real life, and I was appalled that Bill Murray, as successful as he was at the time, was so needy of attention, and so insensitive to heritage of Irish people, that he chose to model a negative stereotype for the crowd that day. The crowd laughed. I didn't. My Irish father had only died the year before, and I resented being chosen out of the crowd of cops, for my Irish face, and the stereotype he sought to put upon me. I hope for his sake, he's grown up a bit since. It's one thing to play a "jerk", it's another thing to be one.

    Richard Dreyfuss is such a fantastic actor. For me, he's one of the greats. He should have more Oscars. He should have won for his work on 'Jaws'. But I suspect the Academy was too pompous to nominate an actor in a _blockbuster_ action film. Every actor was wonderful in that film - the woman whose son got killed too. The scene between her and Roy Scheider where she slapped him - even though it wasn't his fault, is etched in my memory. I felt so sorry for Roy's character. Bill Murray is a good actor too and so funny. But he doesn't have the best reputation either.
    Comedians are often nasty pieces of work in real life. You'd be surprised. I still enjoy his work anyway.

    • @alanvallazza9781
      @alanvallazza9781 Před 2 lety

      That is true they can be jerks. Richard did win best actor for the movie he did in between Jaws and Close Encounters called The Goodbye Girl. It lead to his only SNL appearence.

    • @Jared_Wignall
      @Jared_Wignall Před rokem

      Well, with Jaws, a Supporting Actor nomination would have likely gone to Robert Shaw if one was given as Roy Scheider was the clear lead of the film and would have been up for Best Actor if nominated. Plus number of times, studios don’t want two performers to cancel each other out so they try not to have multiple actors or actresses nominated in the same category unless they’re sure one will defiantly win. Dreyfuss was great in Jaws, but of the main supporting characters, Quint was the obvious standout as Brody was the guy the audience could relate since he’s out of his depth with a Shark problem and doing what he can to learn as he goes to deal with this problem, we’re more in tune with his character than anyone else’s. Hooper is great and Dreyfuss was excellent, but Shaw would have been nominated for Supporting Actor over Dreyfuss, but the acting in Jaws got snubbed like Spielberg did for Best Director.

I do remember though that during the making of "Jaws" Robert Shaw (who played Quint) did not get along with Richard Dreyfuss either. I don't know why but the two butted heads. It's weird because I've probably seen that movie at least 50 times as it's a favorite of mine and I never tire of watching it. When you see a movie you think it's all hunky-dorry with everyone (that's how I think) because in the finished product the movie is excellent and you never can tell what's going on behind the scenes. well, whatever it worked! What about Bob is Murray's funniest movie and performance by far. And Dreyfuss being fuming mad in it is also hilarious. I guess the fact that it was real is why it's so good, haha.

    Murray came up through a very different path in his acting career and he never liked the "Hollywood" actors who took themselves a little too seriously. The tension between the 2 worked in the movie, because it brought out the real rage that Dreyfuss had for Murray. Regardless, it's a great movie and there was a different feel to Dreyfuss in this film that really made his character come alive - whether he realized it or not.

    If it weren't for how personal Groundhog Day is for me (was a family staple, we still watch it every christmas) What About Bob? would probably be my favorite Bill Murray movie. Interesting, I noted 2 movies where Bill clashed with his co-workers and created beefs. I'm glad he and Harold Ramis made up before he died at least. That made taking the news of his death easier.

    It sounds like Murray was a genius, that that helped make the tension between Bob and his therapist work. I wouldn't be surprised if there is no animosity at all.

    A bit dated, Murray allegedly was drunk and in ill humor. His temper has become well known like when he attacked a photographer in the Hamptons in 2019, who was related to Carly Simon. So since he was not all together Murray began insulting the cast of What About Bob and went up to Dreyfuss who was trying to calm him down and Murray was trying to hit him and insulted him by saying unkind things. I would have to find the interview with Yahoo to recall exactly what he said. Dreyfuss was about to discuss with Murray about the next scene and his lines and was commenting about how funny he was. But as Murray was trying to punch him, Bill took out a broke piece from a glass bottle and threw it at Richard who ducked and in anger ran off and he spent most of the movie trying to avoid Murray or be with bodyguards when off the set. Murray has had these outbursts before. Chevy also has a bad demeanor. And they replaced each other on SNL, so when Chase hosted in 1979 they got into a fight when they met for the first time, but patched it up quickly and appeared together in Caddyshack, which came out only months later. Bill ended up feuding with buddy, director and fellow Ghostbuster Harold Ramis on the set of Groundhog Day. It resulted in them not speaking to each other a good 12 years. They repaired the friendship right about 7 years before Harold announced he had cancer.

    I don't like Richard Dreyfuss after I saw a interview he did after finishing the Jaws movie. He was young and said it was the worst film he has ever been in and slagged off the producer and some actors. Move forward after Jaws was a smash hit and Richard Dreyfuss was in another interview and said completely the opposite. What a hypocrite. That was the moment he became not worthy of my attention.
