I kinda love how sentimental this album sounds. Tally Hall will inevitably be remembered for their more “weird” content, the experimental stuff like Ruler of Everything and Banana Man, so this album often gets tossed to the wayside. But I love it for it’s pure charm, all of the songs in this album make me feel this intense nostalgia. Granted this nostalgia partially comes from me listening to this album on repeat while I was commuting home on the Chicago L train at the end of a long day, but I also listened to Marvin’s Museum, so the songs in this album must have been better at getting their hooks in my more sentimental side. Good and Evil has a much slower pace than most of Tally Hall’s works, and it’s lyrics are very literal. While there is a bit of abstraction in the songs, this abstraction is often presented very simply and in a way you can visualize. This already allows the viewer to be more invested in each song because they feel like they’re also along for the ride instead of just being an observer, but then the album truly shines in its pure emotion put in every song. Each song is just dripping with this pure feeling; Im not sure how to describe it. It varies with each song, but all of them feel like they’re purpose is just to encapsulate the complex feelings of a certain moment of ennui or uncertainty or devotion. It lets you just feel exactly what these song were made to provoke, as if they were snapshots of the very memory of a moment instead of the moment itself. Like for example, I interpret “cannibal” as being about an abusive relationship and its just purely syrupy love for a tormentor, plain and simple. With them being the “willing victim of a cannibal” encapsulating the feeling of knowing being with an abuser is bad for you, but staying with them anyway because you’re “fine with it”. It portrays this feeling with the irrationality that someone remembering their abusive relationship through hindsight would see it through. Understanding that they did say this stuff but through the lens of knowing how irrational it sounds. This is what I mean by each song painting the portrait of experiencing the feeling a memory gives you instead of the actual event or even the memory itself.
Overall, this is a beautiful and underrated album. If you’ve made it down here, I thank you for listening to my little ramblings, I hope you took something away from them. Have a nice day.

Okay, I'm sorry, but can we just-
I feel like they knew this was their last album. Fate of the Stars ends so just... Perfectly incomplete, if that makes sense...
The way the vocals just seem to trail off without concluding, and the very final note isn't the root note which is the very thing that brings so much satisfaction in music, but this song just builds up to one grand-yet-quite finale, but that's all. It just ends. There's no conclusion.
It's like you get lost in the woods, and you never find your way home.
They knew what they were doing, and maybe this even signifies something. Maybe it's like the theory of the universe collapsing in on itself, and thus creating a new universe. And that universe shatters into it's own, new pieces of the former universe.
Idk, maybe I'm just thinking too deeply, but it's all just so perfect

Every song in this album is opposite to another song. Either their meaning, lyrics, or title are opposites. And considering this album is about opposites I'm mostly positive about this.
    Example:
Turn the Lights Off's meaning is about becoming a teenager. Meanwhile, Fate of the Stars title, I think, is about death. Now what I've all said is just speculation so don't yell at me if I'm wrong.

Someone has limited time to express their affection, and it gets labeled as sarcasm due to it not being “genuine” enough. *Never Meant to Know - **0:00*
    _[Verse 1]_
Woke up today with the lay of the land
Feather in cap and the sun in the sand
It was easy, it was easy to understand
Everything suddenly falls out of sight
Every attachment is made of the light
That you offered, you have offered to give me life
    _[Chorus]_
See the sky and all the land together again
See the way the earth can stay below
Who do we think we are? Everything plays a part
There are some things we are never meant to know
    _[Verse 2]_
Having enjoyed all the meat from the bone
Is perfectly equal to being alone
It was even, but you breathe and I turn to stone
Everything suddenly looks like a sign
Easy to see from the outermost clime
I believe in what I leave in the way behind
    _[Chorus]_
See the sky and all the land together again
See the way the earth can stay below
Who do we think we are? Everything plays a part
There are some things we are never meant to know
    _[Bridge]_
And all the parts combine to one
And all of us around the sun
    Everything will fall away
    To order from the disarray
See the sun the shadows cast
From all the times I floated past
    See the ocean spinning out
With all the hope and all the doubt
    _[Chorus]_
See the sky and all the land together again
See the way the earth can stay below

      [Verse 1]
You were the chosen appointment to be who you are
I have been sitting and waiting and hoping apart
You are in sight in the air in the night in the airplane
I am a light in the city your flight overcame

      Not too far
      [Verse 2]
Maybe there's something to being the one who you are
Holding the thoughts in as you pull away in your car
And I get to thinking a little too often
And all that I want is a little aloft and
Maybe it's all too much thinking and not enough heart

How is it all of the people can know who you are?
Off in the distance emitting a glow in the dark

Something i think is underappreciated about this album are the dualities between some songs. For example, Never Meant to Know is about the things that you're probably never meant to understand why they happen, while & is about understanding that things have dualities, even if you can't accept it. You & Me is about realising you found that special person in your life and Cannibal is about not wanting to get out of a toxic relationship.

I used to be a pretty big fan of tally hall 2 or so years ago (slowly drifted away from the fanbase a little after the doc surfaced). Randomly felt an urge to start listening to it again a few weeks ago (terrible timing, I know). But even when I was a pretty big fan i never stopped to listen to Good & Evil in its entirety. I feel like half of me was afraid it was gonna be underwhelming, and the other half wanted to be in the perfect mood to listen to the whole thing. I finally decided to listen to it today and, holy shit, this album is GOOD. Like, i was not expecting to enjoy every single song as much as I did. I didn't like any of Rob's songs in MMMM, so You & Me and Out in the Twilight really took me by surprise (specially that ONE chord that plays during the chorus of OITT). I also didn't know what to expect from Zubin's songwriting, but let's just say cannibal is definitely going to one of those songs I play on repeat while drawing (also, am I the only one who thinks this song kinda sounds like a foo fighters song?)
Joe and Andrew wrote most of my favorite Tally Hall songs, and this album has some of their best work for sure, but I won't talk about them since I've already listened to their songs religiously for years (specially hymn for a scarecrow, misery fell and &). But I really dig the prog rock vibes they were going for. One thing that stood out for me, though, is the fact that "you" is basically an edu song. It literally sounds like it was taken right out of Sketches 3d.
Overall, i think this album was a tremendous improvement for the band. I remember feeling kind of embarassed about listening to MMMM because some of it hasn't aged very well and it was kinda difficult taking the band seriously with songs such as banana man and mucka blucka (not that this is a bad thing, though! I love Lemon Demon and he definitely doesn't take things too seriously either).
But with this album it's very clear that every member had a lot of potential. It's really sad that they weren't able to record more albums. I'm really curious as to what direction they were headed to after this album.

@@SKYPORF a few years ago a group of tally hall fans released a huge doc exposing Joe's problematic behavior. In the doc he was accused of a myriad of things, from racism and transphobia to being abusive to his girlfriends to offering illegal substances to minors. If I recall correctly, most of the stuff in the doc has been disproven and some tally hall members came forward and tried to justify the situation by claiming that Joe had undiagnosed schizophrenia. After a while the doc was privated and fans just moved on. This year, however, a second doc was released accusing Joe of more problematic behavior, and this time I think the claims had more substantial evidence, but the doc was privated again before I could take a look, so please don't take my word for granted and take some time to do your own research on the topic. CZcams kept going "Hey listen to this album" "hey listen to this album" "hey listen to this albm" until I died. This album is good. I like it.
    EDIT: THIS ISN'T SPIRIT PHONE
Another edit, this album really is amazing. That being said though, it definitely does drag towards the end, in my opinion. I love the melodies and general composition of this music, but it does lose it's identity sometimes. I find it's at it's strongest in it's most nature centerd songs, like the first song, or that sad one about scare crows.
Edit: Another update regarding my time with this album, I'd avoided it a lot recently, after having discovered Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum. After having listened to the two, I just kinda decided Good & Evil couldn't compare, and stopped listening. But that being said though, that wasn't fair to this album. This time, I'm thinking much more from a perspective of the album as a whole, and it's themes.
I originally believe this one to be about Nature, while Marvin's focused more on people, and the human experience. Listening again, the subject of humanity appears in both, it's just tackled differently. This one is more abstract, and more.. Strange? I enjoy them both a lt.
Also, thanks for all of the likes. I only found out how many likes this comment had, and it's left me feeling very good about myself.
Edit: I just think this will look funnier the more edits I put in, so I'm gonna keep editing it every time I listen to it. This album has undertones of pirates, I feel like I hear pirate noises throughout a lot f their music? Very odd.
Edit: Guess what gamers, This album still rocks.
Edit: It's strang how some people will deliberately include ideas and phrases in their art that don't necesarily seek interpretation, but are more there for the sake of vibe and tone. Think about the title of "Fate of the stars"... Literally speaking, does that mean ? Maybe it's just me, but I'm pretty sure a star's fate in the end is nova or supernova -- this song isn't about novas! I think it's there for feeling -- "Fate", and "Stars". It's a dreamy song about fate and where we're headed. Anyways, here's more lolzors fr you gaymers:
So I just discovered that I can use wireless earbuds to listen to this album in my living room without bringing in my laptop and my family sees it and is like "Omg ethan's listening to the boyband agaainnn" because apparently Tally Hall is a boy band and that's a bad thing?? Today when i came in to listen to the album, I saw this ad of a child who was doing stretches and breathing and counting to 10 but they sounded super sad. It's like they were trying to move on from some tragedy with exercise, but it just wasn't helping. I feel bad for you, tiny child... But I sitll won't download genshin impact.

It's been 3 months. Right now, it is Thursday, August 5, 2021. I regret having waited so long to return. It's almost been a year. Anyways, back to your regularly scheduled furniture.
I kinda just wanna go home if I'm being real with you. I haven't been home in 15 years (that one ain't even a lie), it's left me in a fractured and rusty state. I feel like I've been buried in the sand (HAHHAAHAHHAHHAH GET IT) for 30 years, and I'm only now shuffling out of it... But I'm hundreds of mile under the sand.
Make sure to like this comment, I wanna reach enough that this kadamari of a comment is so big it'll make a beautiful star it'll be a shooting star like ZOOM
the REASON I forgot to update this comment for 3 months was because I was busy playing kadamari damasi

Hmm. Let's see, Let's see. Loose ends, loose ends. Uhhh... Joe Hawley went to jail for posession of a neckbraceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, ROb Conatoe went on to become senator of Missouri despite the US turning to a monarchy,,,,,,,,, U fot in the house, but inside there were beans.
Some of my friends are tallyhall fans. Some fo them might've seen this comment, or even been responders and not even realised it was me. I feel like they'd know though, they would know when I started slinging Lemon Demon quotes their way. It's cool. I should start a blog, should I start a blog?

I showed my husband homsar this album and he said it was and I quote "A christmas rhyme about cardboard squids". Homsar knows a lot about music.

    Stone & Glass
    Everything balancing
    Every saint has a sin
    Won't it last?
    Resident present
I don't even want to ask
    All the light is low
    Where the time will go
All I know is that I can see anything
    Out in the twilight
    All is past
    Everything interesting
    Is it new?
    Is it me?
    Stone & Glass
    Give me a reason it
Ought to be easy to last
    All the light is low
    Where the time will go
All I know is that I can see anything
    Out in the twilight
    And in between
    Eternally
An even fall is all that will
    Appear to be
    Our story's old
    And either end untold
    The in-between goes on
Collect yourself and move into the street (out in the twilight)
The rest of our entire life is free (out in the twilight)

What I love about this album is that some songs, like The Trap, Hymn for a Scarecrow, and other songs is that only one part of the music is played in one ear, and another part in the other ear. The only way to make the song whole is by listening to both sides at once.

I came back to listen to this for the first time in a month or two since the album’s tenth anniversary is today & i forgot how emotional Fate of the Stars makes me?? Once the album finished & I was sitting here with whole tears streaming down my face. What a way to end the band’s career, I don’t think any other “swan songs” would be able to top it.
