    1974 Plymouth Duster Restomod Video V8TV V8 Speed & Resto Shop
    Plymouth Dusters are interesting members of the Muscle Car world. They came in late to the game, with the first models appearing in 1970 and running until 1976. Anyone who knows the history of the fuel crisis of the early 1970s, rising insurance rates for fast cars, and new emission controls choking out performance understands the timing. The good thing is that today, the Duster is a great platform to personalize, like this clean 1974 Duster that came to visit the V8 Speed & Resto Shop.
    Dusters are light-weight cousins of the Dodge Dart, and they share many of the suspension and mechanical parts with the Dart. This one was born with a 318 and a 2 barrel carb, but now sports a built 360 V8, even though the stickers say 340. The suspension was beefed up with performance strut rods, shocks, and a sway bar, and it has disc brakes up front with an 8 1/4" rear end.
    The stock ‘74 360 made 245 HP, but this one has been modified with a performance cam, aluminum heads and intake, headers, performance ignition, and a Demon carb. The V8 Speed crew tuned the carb with an oxygen sensor and a wideband air / fuel meter to dial-in the air / fuel ratio for snappy performance.
    This Duster features a 4-speed manual transmission with a bench seat for a street-racer feel, and a custom dash houses Auto Meter gauges. The suspension has been rebuilt, and the car feels like a much bigger car going down the road. The original blue color is set off by the chrome bumpers and Mopar Rallye wheels.
    Rowing a bench-seat 4-speed behind a torquey small block is great fun, and this car delivers with performance and a great exhaust note that never gets old. The V8 Speed & Resto Shop team performed many repairs and upgrades on this cool Duster, enhancing the reliability and performance for more driving fun.

    My High School parking lot had its share of these, back in the day. I was never especially drawn to Mopar, but it's great to see them being saved, upgraded, and enjoyed!

    My first car I bought was a 1974 Plymouth Duster 360 4-barrel from a fellow Air Force member. I loved it, white with black stripes and a half vinyl roof. I lived in Omaha, Nebraska the winters are cold and unforgiving. My car was destroyed while driving over a ice ridden Hill and a car was blocking two lanes. I slid into that car and basically totaled my favorite car. That was the last time I had a Mopar car until 2015 when I bought a 2015 dodge charger SXT. Now, I just purchased A 2020 dodge charger Daytona. I came back home to the Mopar family.

    1974? The rear tail light panel is a 1970-1972. Front grill isn’t a 1974 it’s 1970 so is the bumper and hood

    As a hardcore Nova fan, I love the Dusters of this body style. On the 73-74 Nova’s, I believe that “resto-mod” is the only way to go because nobody in their right mind would leave those years in stock form. If you modify the bumpers, build a healthy engine, and mini-tub the 73-74’s, you will end up with one of the most beautiful cars in existence. I am currently building a 74 Nova SS, but I showed one (years ago) that was always the crowd favorite. At each show, there was always a crowd around that car that would make the owners of the more-collectible cars jealous.

    1970 Duster 340 lemon twist yellow. My brother bought one in say 1974. What a car he inserted a four speed and traction bars. The sound of that idle there never will be any finer. He was a high school kid then a Chevy cost 2,200 dollars 300hp. Several years after high school he sold it. You know the poor decision making decisions of young people. The car was responsibly sold but he sold it to a dirt bag and it was destroyed.

    If that is a 74 duster which it could be it has a 1970 duster front end hood and grill assembly and a 70 duster tail light assembly and bumper on it. I've been rebuilding and restoring dusters for over 40 years good thing about the 73 and up dusters they use larger upper ball joints bigger rear brake drums

  • @Tess_untamed

    That's not a '74 . It's a '70-72. Better double check. I know by the flat front end and tail lights. I know because i have a ' 75 duster with a 360 4 speed and v-gate shifter. That's a lot of work to change all that stuff over. Why not just find a 70 -72 car ? Just wondering. Looks good anyway. 👍

    Performance strut rods? WTH is that ? These came with shocks not struts.
    To claim its a 340 when its a 360 is pretty lame as is claiming its a 74 when it has a 70 front and back end.
    All that time and money spent he couldn't put an 8 3/4 rear end in it ? He must not get on it hard from a dig if the 8 1/4 is still in it.

    • @V8TV
      @V8TV  Před 4 lety +1

      These cars have a straight lower control arm with a reaction or strut rod. This one now has tubular strut rods with heim joints. The custom sheetmetal was changed a long time ago, and the car wasn't built for the drag strip, so the rear is holding up just fine. But who knows, maybe it will be changed in the future. The current 360 runs harder than an original 340, and the owner digs it, and that's what matters, no? Thanks for the feedback.
