  • In this video, I show you how to put your Land Rover LR3 or Lr4 into the ever desired extended mode and then super extended mode.
    Treat Oxman to a bottle water paypal.me/oxma...
    Land Rover air shocks amzn.to/2ia80xu
    These same step can work on your Range Rover and Range Rover sport, depending on the year.
    First, you start off in off-road height with your vehicle running. Then, you place a block of wood under the frame and lower your LR onto the wood. Once, it hits the wood, the computer will think you're in trouble an activate extended mode. Then, you simply hold the brake pedal for 5 seconds while holding the height lever in the up position. This will put you into super extended mode.
    Once, your Land Rover is in super extended mode you can continue driving off-road until you decide to go back to normal driving height.
    You will gain roughly 2-3 inches of ground clearance. Super super extended mode is only reachable when the system thinks you are in trouble or if you jack up the frame to simulate and obstacle and the Land Rover will stay at the new height.

    When i bought my D4 (almost 4 years back) I was taken by the tech and lots of other benefits. Believe it or not it was a lot cheaper than the Land cruiser 200 equivalent that had almost zero creature comforts - we get different specs in Australia. About a year ago I went with the family on holiday but had to leave them to do a work call in a place called Batemans Bay - I came across a firetrail and thought why not, as I do a fair bit of off-roading. It was a challenging track which I should not have been doing on my own but it was overall 7/10 snot so crazy. At the end and just before the sun went down I came to a mud whole (I was still on the OEM types then) and I got out, did the stick test etc and thought no worries......as soon as I got into the mud hole I just sank. I was far away from a town and it was about to get dark. I remember thinking what an idiot i was. Changed into Rock Crawl and tried to go forward and back - nothing. The alerts came up and I followed the instructions and the Disco went into extended mode. It still took a nerve racking 5 minutes or so to get through BUT I did get through. No land cruiser or jeep or hilux etc would have got through. I would have had to walk approximately 3 miles in the dark just to the next tarred road and seriously that would have just been the start. I know that Land Rovers correctly don't have a great reputation for reliability but frankly that episode convinced me that the guys that designed the air suspension knew what they were doing and for me it paid for itself.

      “Which I should not have been doing on my own.” Then gets into butthole clenching trouble as sun is going down. Lol. Right there with you brother. It’s the 15 year old part of our brain that gets us into that situation, but it’s hella fun when you get out. My LR4 has not let me down yet either. Knock wood.

    I knew about the "extended mode" in which the LR extends on its own to "extended mode" once it finds itself bottom out. But to get "super extended mode" I had absolutely no idea, wow I'v owned this car for the last 4 years & still learn something new.
    So to clarify we have
    1. access mode (it's lowest)
    2. Standard height.
    3. Off-road height.
    4. Extended mode.
    5. Super extended mode.
    Thank you oxman for these great videos.

    • @oxmanagain
      @oxmanagain  Před 7 lety +4

      Then #6. Super Super extended mode, which once you are in Super extended mode the system will do it on its own if you are still hitting the bottom or your tire is off the ground. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the support. The Land Rover is an amazing vehicle with lots of surprises.

    Ore you could simply buy the Australian made "Llams" Controller and wire it up (very simple installation - the most difficult part is drilling a hole somewhere to mount the switch - the rest is just plug and play). With this controller, you can simply dial up any height you want - and there are no restrictions on what speed you can travel at in any height - very handy for driving on long beaches or on dirt tracks with a high centre "hump" with the suspension raised to "off road" or higher, and being able to travel at a reasonable speed.

    People who talks about damaging the CV Joints don't know how the system work. You can't drive in that mode, the extended mode is designed to help when the car is high center. As soonest you start moving faster than 5 miles per hour, the computer will lower the car to the standard mode. Great video showing what you can do with the air suspension of these cars.

    Note this mode is intended to help a grounded vehicle get off again, not really to be driven, on newer vehicles the rock crawl mode is the highest it can safely be driven, also bear in mind on road stability will be affected which is why they should drop down again automatically at higher road speeds

    Great video. However keep in mind you are putting your cv joints under a lot more stress than they were designed for, I wouldn't drive around like that for too long. Often when cvs break it's because the car is in super extended and someone floors it.
    Another thing to consider is when you are up that high there is absolutely no suspension articulation. The wheels have been pushed down as far as they can go by the springs so when offroad it's not always best to go as high as you can.

    Wow never seen a Landrover/rangerover raise so high, although considering how heavy the disco3 is, i'm sure a leak or two would spring up-- if they were the old struts-- from the air suspension system somewhere considering how much pressure was being exerted on the components just to keep it that high.

      @oxmanagain  Před 7 lety +1

      No, not really. I replaced my struts at 200,000kms as preventative maintenance and the bags were like brand new. Only replaced for the new shocks. Failed air bags in the D3/D4 are extremely uncommon, does happen but not likely.

      Hmm we must be incredibly lucky seeing as I had a 3 and now a 4... I know the old style bags in the 2s had problems but they're a very different design to these struts. The compressor is only good for about 5-7 years if you're using it constantly for off-road use, small price to pay for the versatility though.

    Has anyone tried driving in this "super extended mode"? I have an L322 with extended "lift rods" that make my "normal mode" about 2" higher than normal. When I then use "off-road" / raised height mode, I get loud pops from my front end at low speed. I suspect the noise is from my CV joints binding from the added angle to the front hubs sitting at over 5.5" taller than normal. Any ideas?

    • @oxmanagain

      There's not a way to unlock it. But if you pull out the fuse that allows the vehicle to go up and down once you're at the desired height it will not lower. I made another video on how to diagnose your suspension problem and that's how I found out there's a fuse that disables the Rover from going up or down.

      @@thewanderingalbatross1061 Ok, so what is going on there, is that when you select access height while driving fast, you are really selecting a 'pending' lowering of the vehicle when you reach a slow enough speed. That is to say, it would be handy if you were going to arrive at an underground parking or your home garage, which has limited roof clearance etc. Alternatively, if you have elderly folks in the vehicle who would benefit from 'access height' upon arrival at the destination, you can just preempt that while you remember and select the lowered height in advance..

    One time in my 2011 LR4, I got stuck when I was already in super extended mode, and after about 2 minutes of sitting on the rock, the rover went into super super extended mode by itself. Not sure if there is a way to manually select super super extended mode (other than using jacks) but it seems to me that only the computer can engage super super extended mode.

    • @oxmanagain
      @oxmanagain  Před 7 lety +5

      I started the video off in super super extended mode just to show how high you can get. Then I show how to go into extended mode then super extended mode. From off-road height, you lower the LR onto the block and then it bounces up to extended mode. Next, you hold the brake and the height selector in the up position for 5 sec and you go to super extended mode. To get to super super mode I lifted the LR with a jack and it stayed at that height. If you're off-roading the vehicle will go to that mode on its own if bottom out.

      Giancarlo S In order to go into extended mode you have to have something trigger it. The reason I use the block that would represent you getting grounded then the vehicle will automatically go into extended mode. From extended mode if you hold the brake and the indicator button in the up position then you go into Super extended mode. The reason your vehicle is in off-road mode when you leave the tire shop, is because once they Jack it up, your air struts are constantly trying to keep your tires on the ground.

    What is Super Super Extended Mode - at no stage in your video were you higher than Super Extended Mode - nothing that the car was not designed to do and is all covered in the manual. I have LLAMs fitted to my car so can go +50mm higher than whatever is selected or what the car does - however it cannot go higher than the what the suspension is physically capable off. When at offroad height and LLAMS at +50 I am about the same height as super extended height (your Super Super height). If I then grounded the base height setting should try to go from Offroad to Extended height (I then have my extra 50mm) but it probably will not go much more because of the suspension limitations.
    Nice vid but there is no such thing as Super Super Extended mode.

    • @oxmanagain
      @oxmanagain  Před 7 lety

      Thanks for the detailed comment. At the beginning of the video, I'm in super super extended mode. Regular off-road height is 14" measured from the center of the LR @1:03. Then super extended mode raised it to 15 1/2" @ 3:15. Then what I'm calling super super extended mode is @ 4:36 and the height went to 17 1/2". This is how I got it to that height. I put a floor jack under the frame and raised the LR and then it stayed there. I have been at this height before when I was off-roading and the vehicle became grounded on one side. The Rover will continue to try and level itself until it can't go any further.
      I started the video off in super super extended mode just so people could see what it could get to. Then I show the process. You are right about the name, I just came up with that because I didn't know what else to call it. Thanks for watching.

    • @joeblow3823
      @joeblow3823 Před 7 lety +1

      Thanks - what you call Super Extended mode is what Landrover in the handbook call Extended Mode - and what you call Super Super Extended mode is just what we all call Super Extended mode (actually LR dont refer this as anything in the handbook). So please do not use terminologies that are not relevant - it just confused people.
      You go from Locked Access Height, Normal Access Height, Onroad Height, Offroad Height, Extended Height and then to Super Extended Height - there is not Super Super Extended Height. Of these heights the only one that is not selectable is Extended Height as this is the grounding escape function and the car will do this automatically if it detects it is grounded - this is what you mimic with the blocks of wood.

    the USA Marketed vehicles are different to rest of the world, the key has no LR button, but a hazard button in its place
    ride height no hard switch but a rocker button, hence most of your lessons are not at all applicable down under where we have d2,3,4 in USA lr3.4, mostly gasoline power LR dropped the D name because of the terrible name the Disco 2 had there with gas engines, the D2 With 5 cylinder diesel was great, drove one all over, now I have the D4, rides like a Mercedes, tows 4 tonnes, but tooooooooooooooo complex for the Outback

    Why didn't you show how you got to super super x mode?

      I did show how to go into Super extended mode. Once you're in extended mode you hold your foot on the brake, while you lift up the lever until you hear a ding and then you go into Super extended mode.

      @@oxmanagain You didn't read my ques. right, yes you did show how to go into super x mode but not Super-Super X mode. Proof? at 2:43 you went in Super X mode, you confirmed that mode at 3:15 and 3:27 by saying so when you got out the car then you went back in the car and said something and went outside at 4:02 and said you are now looking at Super-Super X mode and gave us higher measurements.. I know what I'm saying, I have ocd for perfection

      @@andremorissette so you do understand that he says one thing but when asked about it he can't back it up. At least you now know that he never showed us the super-super-ext mode and THAT was apparent. I was surprised I was the only one that saw this flaw.
