Interesting product. Good observation about the boards not being fully integrated. I hope they improve that in the future. I do give them credit for releasing this though as a two board product that we can still use now
Fantastic review, Lee! Thanks! 😃
Looks like a pretty interesting receiver indeed!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
really like the architecture to keep hw and sw separated for the radio link from the input and output adapter. think the pros are more than the cons in this case / elrs scenario.
interesting, I am keeping an eye on ERLS PWM RX development. thanks for interesting video
Thx Lee! Too bad about separating the configs. Next version might be better.
Interesting device! I've been using Matek's separate ELRS receiver and PWM boards with great success, and this is another step forwards by not forcing you to use the binary channel 5 and still providing pins for 6 channels. And the vario of course! I take your point about having to use two interfaces to set the device up but I think Matek are hampered a bit by maintaining conformance to the open source ELRS project on the receiver side. Given time (and support from Matek) ELRS could develop the PWM use case, but the project is very quad focussed.
The vario integrated with the CRSF-to-PWM board is very appealing. TBS offers as CRSF-to-PWM adaptor board for CRSF receivers, but not with vario, and only recently added GPS option. Believe Matek offers as well, but without the vario (and GPS) functionality.
Since the Matek board has vario, would be curious if the adaptor board would be compatible with TBS CRFR or Tracer receivers?
(if Matek is reading, consider offering the adaptor vario board as a standalone purchase if possible)
I scooped up one early on. I had in mind to replace the FrSky R9/vario/Vbat/cell monitors set up in my highly modified very experiences Parkzone! Radian motorglider. I had already put the Matek 2400D rcvr with its form of diversity in all my quads and a Nano Goblin and am very satisfied with its range. Loking at the PWM-V I like that it was not integrated only to the well soldered on rcvr so I de-soldered it and replaced it with the 2400D on a pigtail that allows the rcvr to be placed in a better location that near the battery and other electronics. It is a neater install that the fine functioning R9. The vario, Vbat, gps telemetry is great, but I still haven't figured how to get Altitude. There is a way, instructions for OpenTx to report CRSF Alt, just can't rap my head around it.
Yes I agree, not fully baked, but I hope by supporting it development will follow! Thanks for reviewing it!
I have one of these. The altitude telemetry is generated by the GPS, but unfortunately always outputs altitude relative to MSL, which is pointless for a LOS glider. Hopefully matek will have a firmware update to output altitude relative to the power on altitude - and ideally drive from baro rather than GPS
I believe if you don't have a GPS connected it still uses the GPS alt field as there is currently no standalone alt field in the CRSF protocol? Thus once you connect a GPS it probably overrides the barometer... If so, that needs to be an configurable option (sensor priority).
The new firmware update for the PWM board is now available to allow Altitude telemetry. If you update the latest firmware for the RX, TX, PWM board and EdgeTX.
@@spinlaunchglide Oh, nice, was waiting on the Matek firmware to drop. Thanks!
Hello, for information on the telemetry display of the BEC battery voltage using the balance connector.
It is sufficient to connect Vbat to the positive extreme pole (usually the first red wire, the black negative pole is at the other end) on the balance connector. The negative pole (ground) does not need to be connected. And the red plus pole on the servo connector can also remain connected. Tested with 3s and 4s batteries.
I forgot: the vbat_scale value should be x:110 (in the Matek Configurator)
Nice ,will this work with the jumper t-pro elrs version?
Amazing!
if this would be CRSF compatible too i'd probably stuff this in about every plane i've got !
F.Y.I.: ELRS uses the crossfire protocoll. You can use a tbs crossfire receiver instead the Matek elrs.
Lee, now that ELRS v3.0 is released with better wing/PWM support, wondering if the support for the Matek R24-V ELRS has been improved?
If not integrated into ELRS configurator, it would be nice if there was an EdgeTx/OpenTx Lua script to tweak settings on the transmitter, and not need a separate configurator.
The vario would be great in gliders. Its just a shame that there are only 4 full res channels. Having the flaps also on full res is pretty important, especially if you go for a full span aileron setup.
With wide channel mode you can get higher res on the switch channels (256 steps IIRC) so it should be quite usable.
@@pfeerick I know about wide mode. Would you use wide mode with only 255 steps to control ailerons? I wouldn’t. It needs to be full resolution.
I am testing exactly that at the moment - stay tuned :)
now you get that what you had wanted even a smaller glider version from Radiomaster if you check Lee's latest videos cause Radiomaster has released 6 or 7 receivers this week and among them a small glider variometer edition. I hope you will get this message from the broken youtube notification system.
I understand your reservations but, for me, the problem is ELRS only having 4 full resolution channels. I have 2 gliders with flaps where I need 5 channels so I have spoilerons (and can more easily subtrim an individual aileron) and 2 gliders with flaps where I use 7 channels so as to have flaperons, camber, reflex and crow. Many of my other models need 5 or more full resolution channels. I really love what the ELRS team has brought to the hobby but it's not for me till we can have more full res channels. Spektrum and Frsky receivers and my TX16S cover everything I want plus a Crossfire module for things with a lot of carbon in them.
Yes. I _really_ wish we could have six full resolution channels for full house gliders. Ok, maybe seven channels for motor gliders ;-).
I believe channels AUX2 to AUX8 can be setup in a 6/7 bits mode called "wide hybrid" which has more than adequate resolution for things like spoilerons/flaperons, etc. The 4 full-resolution channels (10-bit) are reserved for the "sticks".
I have a very old Naze32 FC that I use with a spektrum rx, would the rx you are reviewing be better for use with a quad or the Matek ELRS-R24-P6 ?
Very nice & useful video as always Lee, well done. In the end have you flown tested the receiver ? Was it good ?
It worked fine but most of the ELRS stuff I see now is connecting to a flight controller.. Happy flying!
@@Painless360 I noticed the trend but not all the planes have the space or need for a FC, like small gliders, etc. Maybe the manufacturers will come with more PWM receivers in the near future.
They are - I have some on the way at the moment... Stay tuned!
@@Painless360 Cheers for the info ! Any particular brand(s) if you can disclose that ?
Damn... this isn't as good as I was hoping then... I was hoping (like you, I think) that the integration was more like the ELRS-R24-P where all configuration is through the web GUI. I will still get this since it is a nice compact all in one unit, but will probably also get the CRSF-PWM-B, since it actually has 8PWM channels rather than 7 this has, although for it you need to add the barometer externally.
I have one of the newer versions of this RX with the latest ELRS and board firmware installed. The main outputs are numbered 1-6 and You now can remap any channel to PWM 5. ALT was added to the CRSF protocol and is now available for Telemetry from the baro, not just the GPS. The only problem I can't get past is my board has a 6 amp positive bias which also affects the mah used telemetry.
Has anyone else used current monitoring with this product, and was it accurate?
8 channels yay!
7, actually, and unfortunately still limited by full res 4 channels, and lower res switch channels, although you can make the switch channels reasonable usable having them in wide mode.
Indeed. Shame that CH5 and CH8 are not with the others. Some testing of flying using the wide band switch channels coming soon as I've heard two camps and wanted to test it out.. Happy flying
For some reason, mine just doesn't want to go into bind mode (tried updating the receiver module, but it says there isn't enough space....tried pressing both the buttons on the modules, individually and together, nothing happened...)
was very excited to receive 2 of these. however after flashing and setting up, I seem to be having very jittery servo movements. any ideas? It seems unflyable how it is. V3 firmware. Happens on both. Cheers.
I've not had that here. Maybe something with the gimbals on the radio or the channel setup? I'd let the developers know in case...
I have two of these and they seem to work well. One question, the vario data, and some other outputs, only seems to update about every 5 seconds or so. Any idea why this is? It needs to be continuous to be of much use for a glider. It looks the same in your video review. Updated both firmwares to latest at 23/6.
I'd check the forums, it could be version related... Happy flying
Im using a flight controller for the vpseed and to make the vario, but i have too much delay from the movement to the sound
Any ideas, why?
Love your channel
Not sure, I've not used it like that. If you figure it out, please let me know.... best of luck
Is there already an update that solves this delay?
Hi there. Love your work and vids.
I have a question. I would like to use this rx in my DLG and would prefer to have an Alt telemetry instead of Vspd to have a launch hight readout. Is there a way to pull this off?
Tnx
Not sure. I'd check what sensors appear in the telemetry... Happy flying
Hi Ido, I just updated my firmware on the board (and updated the Rx to 3.1 at the same time) and found this on the matek site: Start with EdgeTX 2.7.1/OpenTX 2.3.15 and ExpressLRS 2.5, Baro Alt telemetry ID is supported in CRSF protocol.
Can confirm telemetry shows baro Alt as well as VSpd with the update.
@@paulg7763 how do you update the pwm converter board?
I have an old ftdi to usb thingy but it did not work...
@@idomohar I just used the fdti adapter and it worked as advertised. But as I have a few of these matek converters I noticed a couple of times I had to connect and reconnect it a few times to get it connected to my pc. Possibly a problem with the converters or my ftdi adapter, but once it connected it was fine. Oh, check com port setting, maybe that's your problem. And you will need to install drivers for the ftdi adapter if you haven't already done so.
Also ido if you happen to have a flight controller laying around you can update it that way. It's a bit more cumbersome than doing it via ftdi adapter directly, but it's an option.
Can this receiver be updated to 3.x firmware, and will the vario functions still work? I recently bought one of these and can’t seem to bind to it with a RM Boxer that has firmware version 3.2.1. Could it be due to the unusual, and possibly outdated DIY firmware on the receiver?
I'd check if it is listed on the ELRS Configurator. I don't have mine here to test... Happy flying
Thanks again for your quick response. I found the (embarrassingly simple) error on my part. In the configurator, for Device category, I should have selected DIY 2.4 GHz, instead of Matec 2.4 GHz. The Rx is working now😊
need help ,i am trying to build a plane with a FC and elrs reciever, i am wondering if i need pwm reciever if i plug it in the FC made for a plane
Flight controllers are happy to talk CRSF so using ExpressLRS is now very common... Happy flying
hello, but what is the ch5 configuration procedure? I can not in any way to arm the engine, I would be grateful
I don't understand the question, can you rephrase?
Dumb question but do these work with open TX 2.2.2
No idea, You really need EdgeTX to get the most out of ExpressLRS... Best of luck
Disappointed in ELRS support for fixed wing. Especially with the new TX12 mk2 being ELRS. Why so quad-centric?
I suspect that that was the initial focus. Fixed wing support is getting a lot better with full resolution channels, see my video on that.. happy flying!
Does it work with the jumper t lite?
If it has ExpressLRS on it, yes.
hi, tell me, it happens like this under the S-bas, I have Futaba
Not sure I understand the question. What is it you are trying to do?
is correct that has only vario and not altitude sensor ?
GPS will give you altitude..
Paolo, you can get Baro Alt with a board firmware update.
