Apologies for the lower than usual audio quality in this one. We had some problems with the main audio and had to use the back-up. We would have re-recorded the game, but as we are once again in a lockdown we can't meet in person for a while yet.
This is a really good break down of the core rules. I hope James is hooked on this like the rest of us have become.
He is well on the way building a Soviet list.
This is such a clear demonstration of the basic rules, thank you. That one assault charge really turned the battle here.
Thank you
I absolutely love these videos - Mira's fresh take on the Heresy has helped me to view these books and lore that I've been into since...time began in a new light.
I love Ian's extremely informative and insightful counterpoints to Mira's innocence - yin to her yang.
Sheer genius, and these are my favourite things on You Tube atm!
Great job with the table, Sir, and nice batrep. I've still not gotten my starter set played, so living vicariously through you for the moment. Thanks for sharing.
Vicariously is the only way to live though right? Glad you found it useful.
Wonderful vid of how to play and display of various game mechanics. This is definately how I'll play my first battle once I get my starter. Simple battle ground to lay down the basics. Thanks so much.
It is a cracking starter set, for sure. Really does have everything you need to learn the game.
Thanks - a very good primer / refresher for me - despite all the BA forces I've built over the last 12 months I've still only had 1 game since getting the Band of Brothers starter set last January! Looking forward to following your expanded armies over the coming months (lockdown allowing of course).
We had quite a bit planned, but lockdowns and such cause problems. We would have normally re-recorded this one, with the audio problems, but under the circumstances, it could be a long time before we can do it again.
Good bat rep: fun, friendly, and well composed!
Thank you.
Just got the Band of Brothers box! So excited to play!
Great starter set. Hope you enjoy it.
Great video. Looking forward to seeing what you choose, when you expand the forces.
Thanks, more dudes already painted!
Great video guys, a grest series to explain the basics
Thanks buddy
yep, first declare then messure ;-) loved the explainations! Great beginner Video.
Thank you.
Excellent rules explanation. A lot of work must have gone in to the graphics etc. Much appreciated.
Thank you sir!
Fantastic video for beginners. I'm currently a 40k player, but I could see myself investing time and money in 2021 into Bolt Action instead. It looks like a lot of fun :)
If you play 40k you will find this game very familiar. It is a Rick Priestly game, the core mechanics are quite similar.
Just got into warhammer 40k about a month ago now I'm jumping into this as well 😅
@@killer_bro_empireitsme3613 If you have played 40k, you will find a lot of this quite familiar
Great video for someone considering Bolt Action, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Just got my waffen ss start force and can't wait to have my first game, looking forward to watching this so I can see how to play the game.
It is pretty straightforward once you have played a few rounds it all starts to make sense.
This was so cool, very simple to play
Thanks mate.
Nicely done, very good explained.
Why thank you sir!
I'm really thinking about getting into BA and this video was really, really helpful.
Glad to be of service.
WOW those assault rules are brutal! Great battle lads, very entertaining!
Yeah they really are! Glad you liked the video.
A simple and well done video...Just like these rules!👍
Thanks. I like BA for the simplicity of it.
@@ModellingforAdvantage So do I!
“Back to the sack” is my new term for all games!
Yeah, it is quite likely to be used a lot from this point with us too...
hope James enjoyed it, look forward to seeing those soviets in action
He is already working on them.
Nice to finally see how this game is played. Not that I need another game system in my life 🤣
The plastic pile big enough already eh?
@@ModellingforAdvantage understatement of the year lol
Got this last year. Finally started building and priming. Never played a tabletop wargame. Hopefully il get finished this year
Sweet. It is a great game, I am sure you will enjoy it.
still havnt finished painting. Rewatching to try again lol
Great little video for us noobs that are trying to learn, would love to see more with this set, their the ones I’ve started with, so this was great 👍🏻
More to come, as soon as we get out of this lockdown situation.
9:36 The to hit modifiers would be Long Range, and probably Hard Cover if majority of the shooters trace line of fire through a terrain piece (looks like the two rifles are shooting through the ruined walls). Americans do not get movement penalties for to hit rolls when Advancing.
Ah, you excluded national rules for simplicity 👍
yup - we planned a series of games, and then lockdown... hence releasing it as it is to be honest. Wanted to re record it after the audio problems, but that might be months away unfortunately.
Nice play through guys, while since I’ve played bolt action👍🏻
It is a fun little game, providing you don't take it too seriously, like most of our games.
@@ModellingforAdvantage totally heard a lot of horror stories of 40kers moving over to bolt action and going for the ultimate winning army, which is totally inaccurate historically 😁. The game looked fairly balanced 👍🏻
@@hamsteronthepaintingtable6465 it is wide open to exploitation for sure. It is a system where you can have a 6" howitzer and 10 dudes as your army - but as long as you play with sensible people its fine.
@@ModellingforAdvantage yep i really think its a good system and yes with like minded gamers it’s a winner 😁
The Dice bag for activations makes this a very different game... hmmm I like it.
It is a great mechanic to spice up any game.
Great job, this is the place to start for noobs like me.
Delighted to be of service.
Hey! Great video. Can I ask, are you able to charge through cover without movement penalty if you are moving into close combat?
Yes you can charge, but as far as I understand, you still have the movement penalty.
Also... I have this box and used some bocage type barriers to provide cover. Can I say these barriers only provide cover and do not block line of sight to make things easier for long range weapons?
Use any rules you want mate! Do whatever works for you. Normally Bolt Action works on true line of sight - it blocks line of sight if it really does. So if your bocage is taller than your troops it normally would. As I say though, do whatever works best for you.
Awesome tutorial! I just got the set :) Are there scenarios to play with this set included in the box or do I need to look them up online, or make my own?
There is a rookie scenario in the booklet in the set, after that - there are the 12 basic scenarios in the rulebook - alkso included in this set.
Thank you for this video! Considering getting into Bolt Action myself in 2023. What sige board would Band of Brothers or A Gentleman’s War be played on? And which of the two sets would you consider to be best value for money? Cheers…and Merry Christmas!
For the starter sets, 4x4 is plenty big enough. That is the size we have here. As to best value, they're both great, but Gentleman's war is probably better value, and certainly more interesting as a starter game. Forces out of the box are almost symmetrical
@@ModellingforAdvantage Thank you for your reply! I have ordered the rulebooks - and taken advantage of the 4 for 3 offer, so there will be a bit of light reading to do in the near future :-)
@@JBenderP hehe, just a bit.
Dude said he’s gonna “ASSAULT” you! Bro, this guy is unhinged xD
Only way to get things done.
Modelling for Advantage hahahahahhaha
finally got this out on the table and im struggling to find a list of rates of fire, the learn to play just tells me what they are but its not in reference sheets? any ideas
Are they not on the crib sheet, the weapons tables at the back?
🍾🍻Thank Guys👏🏻👏🏻
Glad you enjoyed
7:06 You never actually 'aim' in Bolt Action - shooting unit just declare target unit and then roll to hit. THEN, with a HE round, if a hit is scored, you use the template to determine how many models was hit. You can place the template anywhere on the target unit to maximize the number of hits, completely disregarding any cover between shooter and target unit.
Are you saying there are no to hit penalties? or simply that the placement of the template is not affected by LoS?
@@ModellingforAdvantage The roll to hit is done as normal, including applicable modifiers from e.g. cover. I'm simply saying that the template only comes into play if/after a hit is scored, to determine the number of models hit - and for this step stuff like cover, line of fire, ect. is irrelevant.
I'm pointing it out, because you implied to James he had to 'aim' at certain models in the unit, while waving the template over them, before he even rolled to hit :)
@@philippesimpson interesting, you got a page reference for that? BA rules are spread all over the manual.
@@ModellingforAdvantage page 68, under "HE (high explosive)": "When firing an HE weapon, pick a target unit and roll to hit in the same way as for a normal shot.
If the target is hit by an HE shot, you then need to use the appropriate template to determine how many
models in the unit have been hit."
@@ModellingforAdvantage The rulebook has its issues. You might find useful this rules summary and recompilation I'm working on: docs.google.com/document/d/1mHdq2WKlckv1v8F-aaeSxTdEaF7o4KfzD7nftRYEYlc
Can we get the lists you were running for both sides?
Literally what came in the starter box.
Sorry this is late to party, but do you think i could use like old plastic army men toys for the miniatures for this? Would the size of those be okay? I think their little taller than 28mm but would it be possible??
I don't see why not, as long as you are happy with it.
@@ModellingforAdvantage thanks! Great vid btw
Great video guys. Do you know how I can find a club local/localish to me? I’m in the northwest of England.
Sorry mate, I have not lived in the Northwest for years now.
@@ModellingforAdvantage no worries mate. Cheers for the reply though
The germans deserved a win, they had too few units..Nice tutorial guide for playing bolt action. I wish we can have a close ups of the troops in the beginning.
Yeah, we are so out of practice because of the various restrictions we have been operating under all year. We forgot to close cam the armies. We are in lockdown here so had no space to re-record anything. Decided it was better to put this out as it is... rather than some more solo content.
Hi.
Where did you get that battle mat?
Thanks!
I made it: czcams.com/video/UKQwgwPQtw0/video.html
@@ModellingforAdvantage Great! Thanks!
What's the table size? I might have missed it.
The one we play on is 4x4. I think it is more commonly played on 6x4, but there is nothing that 'requires' you to do that.
What’s the point of the snap to order? When you could have issued the dice / order to that unit and not to the HQ model.
It simply lets you activate both units for the same dice draw. Higher level officers can activate more units with the order as can certain factions with a special bonus - it can be situationally powerful.
Nice introduction to the basic game mechanics. I'd have liked an introduction of both forces, including what weapons they have.
It is always tricky for us the strike the balance between how much you say up front, and how quickly we start the game. There is probably an optimum amount somewhere but we haven't decided quite where that is yet.
@@ModellingforAdvantage @Modelling for Advantage Aye, there are some tricky decisions to be made when doign an "Introduction to ..." video. There are plenty of unboxing videos on the BoB box, so no harm done - I just wish I had seen a minute or two of a breakdown in here, instead of the "need" to watch another video. Anyway, keep it coming! :)
@@darnokx9277 We are planning a part two for this very soon - Covid permitting, of course.
I find that when people are against pre-measuring it's just unsporting behaviour to get a competitive advantage.
It takes the game from Fun, & Casual to super competitive, and way too tense for a game.
For sure, I can't believe some games still have rules against pre-measuring
how does deployment work
Depends on the mission. In this one I think we laid them out as shown in the booklet for the starter set.
Doesn't US infantry get no penalty for moving and shooting, so you got it right with 4's?
we played without national rules, but probably made a few mistakes here and there. We squeezed this in between lockdowns. It was all a bit rushed and we have had no chance to re-shoot anything so it is what it is I am afraid. It is mostly okay - but certainly not flawless...
@@ModellingforAdvantage well, I really enjoyed it either way!
@@charlieofdestruction Why thank you - We have plans for a lot more Bolt Action just as soon as we get out of lockdown.
BAR is not an LMG?
Advantage of ten man units and pinning?
Running into the building? Buildings being different to say trees or rocky ground?
Small unit modifier - harder to hit?
German LMG high fire rate should be using an extra dice?
General point to note. Make sure each action happens as it falls due. The new guy got away with not placing a pin because he did not hear you, so when his unit was hit a 3rd time it only had two pins. Secondly, when assaulting the unit in the building, he should have done an orders/moral test before charging but did not do so. This shows that when guiding someone new in the game you really have to concentrate for both sides.
no premeasuring
Indeed
Pretty sure Airborne mmg is 5 dice. German get 6 for Hitler buzz saw national ability.
Americans also take no penalty for moving and shooting. National ability. Small kinks but great video.
@@deathmagnetic300 Hi there. You are right, of course. We we're playing without the national rules for the starter game - but we did make mistakes. This game was recorded between UK lockdowns so we had no opportunity to re-shoot anything sadly. We definitely make mistakes here and there sadly - just a group of amateurs here I am afraid.
They said in the vid they were playing without national rules
This is more like it, I don't like Warhammer. Every time someone is into something, it's always the same things, e.g. Warhammer, zelda, pokemon, manga, Dr who, Dungeons and dragons, magic the gathering, warcraft and what have you. I'm glad to be different, there are not many people under a certain age who like bolt action, I'm 32 and I want to try collecting Bolt action, but there a bit pricy, but worth it! I only like things based on real life like Tiger tanks and Legionaries, not "melter cannons" and stupid "Space marines!" Warhammer is so nerdy. Some people of my generation seem to all be into the same games too, I used to have an old PC from 1993, but my dad threw it away in 2001 when I was 12. What a bad day that was, I went BESERK! I prefer the old classics and I don't like some modern films either. I prefer AI, Gladiator, Enemy at the gates, Lost Boys, Behind enemy lines, Indiana Jones, The old bond series and things like Logan's run, Jason and the Argonauts, Where eagles dare and many other old classics. 300, Avatar and Mamamia can go suck my balls!!!!
