Timberrr!!! - Trimming Down the Mast - Emerald Isle: Ep.91 Fishing Boat Refit

  • In preparation for our new navigation lights, we trim down the top of our mast. This particular section contained some lead shot which provided some stability benefits in the past. Now, with so many changes to our vessel, the extra weight has become redundant, therefore we removed it.

    I had to come back. I was unable to comment when I watched this video at release. Loved the shot of the eagle flying over your Dad. (22:33) Great shot. Could not believe how many eagles we seen, over the summer of 2018, on our visit to the great state of Alaska.

    Well done Gents! That was a great watch. Len you did really well especially considering that you had no harness. I've done my fair share of working at heights, and any wind, well I reckon it gets cold quick up there. :note and I'm in Queensland(read tropical temps) Australia. I can't imagine having to do it in single digit Celsius let alone negative conditions. At those temps I'd be sleeping in my Tauntaun at the first marker.. Stay well and stay safe. We all are looking forward to the maiden voyage after the refit!

    Man O Man, you guys are getting so much done. I don't know if this was discussed on here or not but a nice crows nest would be perfect and that perch can also be used to mount your red over white above and antennas. If you are going to use it for seining at some point, a set of controls up there would be perfect. Thanks for sharing all this great content. She sure is beautiful.

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  Před 2 měsíci +1

      If we add a crow's nest, it'll likely be nestled between the antenna mounts with a platform at the level of the sodiums. It would be a great view that's for sure, and a lot less scary inside a cage of sorts, lol. Thanks a lot for the comment!

    Everyone around here has changed over to led lights for every light on the boats. So I was wondering why did you go with the sodium lights on your boat? Thanks for taking us along with you. Overhauling the new boat and your trips fishing. Don’t forget about the parts of your lives you share with us. I enjoy your videos and look forward for them. Stay safe and have a wonderful life doing what you love. God bless you all.

    • @robertmalis4493
      @robertmalis4493 Před 2 měsíci +1

      I wonder if it had to do with the cost I know really big LEDs are expensive

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  Před 2 měsíci +1

      For us we prefer the old tech sodiums. They are so simple by design, just a bulb and a ballast. While newer LED rigs are servicable, the conditions here are harsh. If one of the LED arrays go out then its just more stuff to goof with. We've had a few friends that have LEDs and would prefer to revert to sodiums.
      We also prefer the color and contrast of the light itself. LEDs can produce white or orange light, but in our experience it seems to blast out our eyes more in foggy or snowbound conditions compared to the light of the old sodiums.
      One other thing for us is that they will load our generator to an optimal level. While we don't have refrigeration equipment, the 30kw generator will only have a light load if we're just charging batteries or cooking. So we can just pop on our lights to load up to 3000 watts.

      Hi, Douglas, just a copy paste from another comment I just answered.

    • @EISAlaska

      Lead shot, not shot glasses. lol! It was to slow the roll of the vessel, not so snappy that way. We added weight when we put up the sodium lights, about 200 pounds, so that compensated for removing the lead.

    Why would there be lead shot in something so high above the center of gravity?

    • @raass233
      @raass233 Před 2 měsíci +1

      The added weight causes the ship to roll a little over center. This requires more force to roll back, which slows the frequency of the roll. Imagine a drunken sailor staggering a little extra each way. It takes them longer to get there.

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  Před 2 měsíci

      Yep, good analogy. The weight up high counteracts with the weight in the keel, which in turn reduces the "snappiness" of the roll. There is science behind it I'm sure, but that's above my pay grade, haha.
