    How to service and replace the impeller and water pump on a mercury outboard motor.
    Most outboard motors work on the same basic principals where the main shaft turns an impeller inside a water pump housing pumping water up and through the outboard motor, cooling the motor down...

      Hey! Great video. Thanks. I’m stuck with reinserting the drive shaft on my 1971 Mercury 1350. It hits with 1 inch prior to seating in properly. I thought it was the drive shaft but you mentioned the gear connector. Any advice on how to get either of those two aligned? Thanks

    Rotate the drive shaft clockwise while pushing down on the pump housing. This will ensure that the impeller blade are deflected in the correct direction. Apply grease on the flat of the drive shaft to hold the key in place. Do not apply grease to the top of drive shaft, only on the splines. Applying grease to the top end on the drive shaft may cause a hydraulic and the shaft will insert completely. Just some thoughts.😁😁

    Good job but should have put some water type grease on the lower o-ring and the propeller.

    adding grease to the O ring helps it last longer, adding a thin bead of oil on the impeller blades helps it a lot, due to a dry start up & as you put the impeller in the housing keep spinning it as you tighten it down so when it squishes down it doesnt get pinched at the bottom. make sure it turns freely...that happens all the time....and add a bit of green marine greese to all the bolts.

    Love the shirt you have on bro!!! How do I get one? Do you only have shirts or do you have others as well?

      Great tips man. I think that adding the oil to the impeller blades would also help it go in easier because i had to give it a bit of a pounding to get it to go in.

      @@FishingAdventuresHB thats the one... a small amount of marine grease on the key, will help it stay in place as you put the empellor on...it would be good to add torque settings to the gear housing bolts as well. and a thing line of sealent to help it mate better., oh and run ya engine in a half cut down plastic barrel, wont make so much noise and with the hose at the bottom of the barrel, it pushes clean water and over the sides..its got 100% clean water and can suck up what ever water the engine needs.. as i found ob muffs just dont give the engine a decent water flow...

      I love the barrel idea I know that the muffs isn’t the best but always had the concern with the motor in the barrel as it sucks up all the oil that comes out of exhaust. With the hose in the barrel the oil would float on top and out of the barrel leaving the motor sucking clean water as it’s designed to do. Love it. Thank you.

    You didn't lube the impellar housing.

  • @Number1Cowboy
    @Number1Cowboy Před rokem +3

    you did that all wrong dude,when installing the top housing on the impeller turn the shaft clock wise and it will set right down on the impeller,never beat tha top housing down on the impeller,the tabs on the impeller have to be turned a certain way but the way you did it you just cramed the housing onto the impeller,

      Not to mention no grease on the key to hold it in place or on the impeller or house.
