@ninja.teacher (Alex) are you South African?
@@gavinvd1yes, he is, the accent is definitely south african.
The District 1 always has more options such as foods and chill out. Brother you forget to mention PHO as one of your favorite foods. Well, the other foods you did mention are still the best too
I am a Filipino American and I am live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I visited Vietnam in November 2023 to see my girlfriend who lives in Phan Thiet. She picked me up at SGN airport. I must agree when I met my GF's parents and siblings they did greet me with a bow instead of hugging. They were very respectful and Vietnamese people in general were super nice when I visited both HCMC and Phan Thiet. I also remember the food is bomb! Super delicious! I cannot wait to go back to Vietnam. I am going back to HCMC in February 2024. Thank you two for posting this video! Its very helpful especially for a foreigner like me from the U.S. Thanks again. I will keep watching your channel.
Living in a smaller city in Vietnam not too far from HCMC I can tell it's very worth it learning Vietnamese. Even if it's hard - and I speak several languages fluently by now - don't give up: Vietnam is worth it!
My family and I are from the US but currently living in Japan. We recently got back from a trip to Vietnam (Hanoi and Saigon) and absolutely loved it. Before going, i watched your video on how to cross the street and here i am back alive😂.
When I was in Vietnam last year, we had a private tour guide with a driver. We got pretty friendly with them and tour guide invited us to his home for next time we visit in Hanoi. We would drink green tea and one thing I noticed, the driver kept refilling my tea when I finished. So I call him my green tea buddy now. Hope to see them again one day. Didn't drink green tea prior to Vietnam, now I drink it every morning.
Idk, it's so easy to make friends in Vietnam. Everything so relaxed and chilled. Many people want to try out their english a bit it seems and even when you go eat somewhere or just shopping the sellers often try to start a conversation. While feeling pretty much lonely here in the west on a daily basis I never felt alone in Vietnam, not a single day. I just have to leave the house and something is going on ... Speaking a bit of Vietnamese helps a lot tho...
Van is strikingly pretty.
pretty? All that plastic surgery and still ain’t fixing it

Re: laughing at our broken/poor Vietnamese pronounciation, I can definitely relate to that! Twice a year I have to call out student's names to do their speaking tests. Its easy to know when you get it wrong because they all giggle and repeat your pronounciation, just have a laugh with them! They know you are trying your best.
When I lived in Da Nang for almost 2 years, I would only live in a Vietnamese area. I saw maybe a foreigner once a week. Usually a backpacker who was lost. So when I’m forced to immerse myself in the culture, speak, the languages must as much as I can, I meet new local friends Quickly.
This was interesting to watch. never been to asia before, let alone place like VN. Greetings everybody from Amsterdam🇳🇱🏍
The hugging part is so true…I tried to hug a Vietnamese person goodbye and they just looked at me strange 😅
Hugging among friends isn't typical in Vietnamese customs. Vietnamese folks save hugs for family, like spouses, parents with kids, or grandparents with grandchildren. Even siblings don't hug much. But you know what's common? Shaking hands! That's the go-to in Vietnamese culture. Nowadays, the younger generation in Vietnam is embracing hugging, celebrating birthdays, and giving flowers. It's a reflection of Western culture that has been seeping into Southern Vietnam since the '60s and continues to persist.
Vietnamese woman in Hawaii are a loud when they talk. My mom says she’s not fighting. They just talk loud. I’m used to it. But now that I’m older. I keep telling my mom I can hear her. She’s right next to me. 😂. Does not change.
Some American moms are the same.
Talking very loud when I am close.
I think it’s just certain people- not necessarily culture
Another Awesome Video ! Always happy to see new content I've learned so much, and will be visiting Hanoi and N Vietanam in September 🤞
Keep up the hard work, its much appreciated :)
cuối cùng chị yêu đã trở lại
mong chị ra nhiều video ạ hihhi
I love how you changed direction and more targeted content. I am seriously looking to relocate to Vietnam from the USA. I value your content and hope you continue to bring more useful vlogs.
I have never in my entire time had a Vietnamese person bow, when meeting. Me, I was living in Thailand for 3 years and still do this and like this custom, as I don't like personal touch when meeting others. I will just stay in my own space, wave friendly and thats all. .. no more handshakes, only in professional way in some circumstances :) "half Viet here" from USA/Vietnam. I feel like its more common for people who are strangers, to stare and be shy for some time... people stare bc they cannot tell if I am a foreigner, Thai, Viet, or something.. but once I shake my head like nod and smile and say hello, they always try to talk a lot more :) , but I don't hardly speak Viet. So my meeting of local people, is always something confusing for them.
When we laugh at foreigners speaking Vietnamese, it’s mostly due to being so impressed that they can speak it! It’s not very common and a very hard language to learn.
Happy New Year 2024 to you Van. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas as well. This is a classic video to begin the new year with.
Thank you Van. Vietnam in next week. What to get the most out of it and you sure are helping. Thank you!❤
As a hispanic i tend to hug my Viet friend & she just laughs. At 1st i was confused why she didnt hug back but later understood. Hope to visit VN specially less tourist places for real experience
I love your channel! This is the second video that I've watched and it was very helpful as I've been living in hochiminh city for 3 months now. I love that park that your at. Landmark 81 is very close to my apartment in District 2 😊. Thank you again for this great video!🙏❤️🙏
The District 1 always has more options such as foods and chill out. Brother you forget to mention PHO as one of your favorite foods. Well, the other foods you did mention are still the best too.
Just back from 5 days trip in Danang. Very lovely place. People in Vietnam surely very friendly. Hope will have more time go there again...
I can't wait to watch even though I must have already done it correctly. I am going to watch sitting in Tan Phu, HCMc with my Vietnamese fiancee right now😊
Last week I met the first time with the Vietnamese woman in the cafe and after I said her some Vietnamese words she laugh because of shock. Another time I told my friend đúng rồi, but she heard đứng dậy and stand up 😁So speak Vietnamese and make mistakes is really funny and not offended at all)
YOU are AWESOME!!! Keep up the good work, you are destined for GREATNESS!!!
Great, thanks to Van & Alex for this video!
Happy New year Van! Great video though !
Very fantastic. You both really explain good. ❤
Man Viet people in the US don't mind the hugs so much so I was kinda surprised/insulted by two cousins--one in Vietnam, one half Thai/Viet, in Thailand who stood like a statue and didn't hug me back when I goodbye hugged them. Lol.
Standing like a statue….yep so true 😂

I'd love to see van vu cover the local salsa, cuban, bachata dance scenes/clubs!!
great video... Alex is right,.. have also found that modesty and manners go a long long way as a foreigner in Vietnam! It is a bit of a culture shock the first time if ya make the effort I have found Vietnamese are the most welcoming and warmest people I have ever met.. can't wait to get back to Vietnam.. also making the effort to learn the language makes a big difference! making mistakes in Vietnamese is inevitable as its a tonal language and western languages mostly are not so there will be occasional errors but they do appreciate the effort..
In my experience, Vietnamese people tend to show their love by doing things rather than just saying it, for example, feeding you versus saying "I love you."
Looks like you two are friends already.....thanks for all the tips, very interesting!
That thumbnail and @0:06 is killing me 🤣. I remember when I met my friend in HCMC for my first visit there, she waited outside for me at my hotel, when I seen her I went in for the hug and she met me with the hand out for a handshake instead, and I was instantly reminded that PDA isn't normal everywhere, especially VN. I felt like such a jerk and a goof at that moment, but definitely took no offense.
Awesome video❤❤
Hi Van Vu from San Francisco 🎆 Happy New Year

Hi van wu happy new year great job always thanks❤🎉😮
Van Vu (not "van wu")
Such a powerful grip on that mic I have to say lol
Ah yeah hugging, I just asked if I can give a hug.
One seemed to accept it reluctantly, though most were fine with it after I asked.
👍😉😉 love your topic 😉😉👍
I think you mean How not to approach.... How to 'not approach ' means you don't approach them or want to. I've just been teaching this about infinitives last week. The initiative 'to approach " stays together usually and the not goes before it. Good luck. Nice videos. Beautiful presenter too.
I realize opinions vary but his favorite dishes, while all good, are not very flavorful. Afraid of Mam? Durian? Once you get past the slight odor, both taste wonderful. Again, opinions vary but neither Da Nang or Hoi An are particularly interesting to me, lots of tourists. My personal favorite place in Vietnam is Hue. Lots of history, food, and Vietnamese dialect are both unique.
that intro was hilarious
Hello Van. Love the videos. So pretty ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Made mistake of wanting to hug a new friend I made, didn't realise that's a no-no !

sounds like greeting ppl in Vietnam is more like Scandinavia - they also don't like to touch and will keep 1 meter distance LOL
How ' bout a fist bump.. is that common in Vietnam when you meet someone for the first time.. you know here in America since COVID " fist bumps " have become quite popular..
Hi Vanvu; how can i meet you in person? If you are coming to Singapore; i volunteer to be your host and guide for the trip.
I must be special-

I think it’s pretty normal that asians tend to be slow to warm up type of people.Cuz asians grew up being taught to be respectful and reserved😂
