- These 1.5hp fire breathing water cooled Seahorse canoe motors weigh only 18lbs. 1/3 the weight of a battery. ~1lb more than a typical 30lb thrust trolling motor. Pick one up if you find a clean one you won't regret it! Very easy to carry! Very convenient, runs a long mission with only the 1.5 pint tank on top. 2 hours+ @ WOT
Don't buy a noisy "weed whacker" outboard or a new imported off brand without a parts supply. Service parts for these US Made gems are inexpensive and widely available for these classic outboards to bring them back into reliable operation.
All canoes have a set hull speed which you can attain with 1.5hp. You can go faster but there are diminishing returns. The Johnson 1.5hp 1969 1R69C and it's cousin the Evinrude Mate.

Looks good in red too! That's a sweet little engine there for sure.
These canoes are the real deal. Thanks for leaving me a link to your page. My son and I are both 6ft and we both have no problems standing and maneuvering around in this canoe. I only have a 55lb thrust motor on mine.
When fishing an electric trolling motor is quite nice.Only lugging the big battery is not. This youtube is why i knew the merits of the Sportspal. czcams.com/video/PRul2oZWqTE/video.html
I found a "local" dealer who was getting a truckload in 2 weeks. I drove by on vacation and selected the red one and picked it up a week later on the way back from vacation.
Thanks AMWN!
reliable but VERY noisy.
Awesome little motor, I'd like to pick one of those up if I was in the lower 48 :(
One question, what camera setup were you using? It was really smooth!
Does that do well in the wind? I have a 28lb thrust electric for my s14 but can buy a 1.5hp for pretty reasonable. I am thinking that the 2 stroke would be better for me on windy days any advice?
errer1 It will do alright! About the same thrust as a 40 Minn Kota the advantage is you can go full throttle for close to two hours on the pint and a half of fuel in the tank. You won't regret picking one up for missions that allow it!
I have since learned there is a place for the electric trolling motor too but I really dislike transporting the M29 battery.
If I have a heavy load or expect allot of wind I might reach for my 57 Evinrude light twin 3hp. Very smooth but it weighs 32lbs. I prefer the 1 cylinder for 90% of all missions. I have settled on modern 2stroke oil and 30:1 for all my outboards to keep is simple. I do have a 5 gallon tank of alcohol free fuel. I mix up 1 gallon at a time which takes most of a summer to go through.
007mwn Just got back running a full load 5 people up the Milwaukee river into a headwind managed 3 knots.
007mwn Thanks that helped me make my decision :)
+errer1 - Electric trolling motors are excellent when silent and quietness are to be enjoyed. I love it when you just hear the water splashing and the wind it's a wonderful experience.
Let's not talk about battery weight. I got on a new battery some >5h of use not bad at all. The speed is low so 5h might seem much but you won't go very far.
On the other hand if the idea is to really go somewhere i.e. from A to B, just use the gas engine for the moment it's still unbeatable. All the time I used them was on calm fjord saltwater. Sometimes with a lot of boat traffic. You wan't and need the extra speed to get out of the way of the speedy big boys when crossing busy lanes... ;-)
How much would a Classic like this cost?
I was lucky and got mine in town from macksmotors.com/
Ran great and came with MAck's reputation for $150. I see them running for 150-250 on craigslist. I would like to get an Evinrude Mate version since it was made in my home town.
