      True. At this point, it is clear Putin's plans towards Ukraine were similar to plans an infamous painter with mustache had in mind when invading Poland in 1939. Destruction of the nation, russification, annexation of better parts, turning the rest into puppet state, etc. Good luck negotiating. Russians never negotiate in good faith and they perceive negotiations as a weakness. Basically, every time the west would appease, Putin would attempt to grab more.

    Trepova was being watched by the FSB, and is hardly likely to be able to make such a sophisticated device. As she was being watched by the FSB, it would be easier for someone else to plant the bomb directly rather than giving it to her to plant.
    My guess is the FSB looked through their books of hookers, found one that looked like Trepova, made her up to look even more like Trepova, and gave her the statue. So they killed one Putin critic and arrested another Putin critic for a crime she didn't commit. The police will beat a confession out of her and a compliant judge will do the rest.

    I saw a clip earlier where she had apparently been arrested by the police and yet she was walking out of a building and into the police car completely unrestrained with one policeman walking ahead and one behind. I thought at the time it didn't look like a typical arrest. It was very casual. How come she was in the room when the bomb went off and yet uninjured anyway?

    I think it is interesting that this happened right after Ghirkin created the Club for True Patriots. He might be too prominent to bump off right now but perhaps the FSB was willing to send a message to cool the criticism. That said i realize this is highly speculative on my part. It is much like the parlor game of trying to decide who blew up the pipeline. It is like a Rorschach test. You can tell a lot about a person by what they are reading into it.

      @@steve-real Bakmut has been re-enforced by the Ukrainian for the past 8 years as there strong point , they shelled eastern cities from Bakmut since 2014 . Also it was a key weapon and supply route with multiple roads connecting it from west Ukriane.
      Now that this city has fallen then last line of defence for Ukriane in the Donbas is Kramatosk after that Russia will have complete control of Donbas. It’s a straight road to Kramatosk

    She could well have been forced by Kremlin operatives (via some kind of threat to her family, e.g.) to deliver the sculpture, in order to frame her. Such a move would provide cover for silencing embarrassing military bloggers who are publicly critical of the army's ineptitude in the war. That is, by putting one of them to death "pour encourager les autres" ["to encourage the others"], as the French say with characteristically dry and black humor.

    I rarely hear western journalists seeing the whole context of this war. This guy’s rhetoric is very similar to professional pro-Ukrainian Russian commentators like Andrey Illarionov. It’s good to see that someone in the west is understanding what’s going on in Ukraine and Russia relationships and history. He needs to be invited to Fox News, CNN and others to spread the word.

    I haven't dug into this fully yet but it makes no sense that Ukraine would bother to target a Russian blogger who is critical of Russia's military failings. Sounds way more like Putin wasn't happy with the critism and boom! Extra benefit from this event would be blaming Ukraine for it and now Russia can justify attacks on pro Ukrainian bloggers which is truly frightening.

      Have to say I totally agree. Tartarsky was creating a lot of turmoil and unrest, which would be perfect for Ukraine - the more internal bickering in RU, the better. The only advantage Ukraine is getting from this is further proof that the "special operation" is not going according to plan.

    The comment about espionage being a wilderness of mirrors is so apt for these kinds of conflicts. I have great respect for Michael Clarke and am ready to accept with a good deal of confidence his expert assessments of possibilities, probabilities and impossibilities.
    The Russian invasion was entirely evil and the conduct of some their troops deserves condemnation. How different is the actions of Russia to those of, say, the USA in Grenada, Iraq and Afghanistan? All conflicts started to further the interests of the perpetrator. You can argue it’s a matter of degrees but, for me, the reality, is that there are no blameless governments in this.

    Vlad was simply the first recipient of Russia's new Most Likely To Be Immolated award. It followed all the usual hallmarks of any award ceremony. Introductions, lovely young lady presents a golden statue, he gives an acceptance speech, and then bursts into flames. Nothing to see here...
    I can't help but wonder who the next recipient will be.
    The real tragedy is that a thoughtful young lady felt compelled to committ a desperate act to try and remove an evil from her country, and will lose her freedom or perhaps her life over such a worthless human being. At least she did something about the evil, though. More Russians need to step up and follow suit.
