  • In this video, I demonstrate how my DIY 1,600 sq ft heated driveway could not remotely keep up with the infamous Christmas Blizzard Snow Storm in Buffalo, NY. Watch as I bring the camera along to clear drifts from the vents, clear the garage window, and assess the damage from a 60' tree blowing over.

Original predictions stated Blizzard like conditions would begin Friday afternoon. In reality they began about 6 hours earlier at 9 AM. My original plan was to pre-heat the driveway all morning, however I never had a chance. Even if it had been pre-heated, it would not have been effective for this storm. Temperatures below 10ºF and 60+ MPH winds were way beyond its designed capabilities.

The playlist will have all of my videos in the correct order form start to present, regardless of the date I uploaded them. It starts with how I designed the PEX and Snowmelt Loop Layout, shows the process of installing the actual heated concrete slab, demonstrates how I did the math to calculate the boiler and pump sizes, installation of all of the components, and ends with lots of time-lapse of the system melting snow. It also includes snowmelt system startup and shutdown videos, as well as walkthroughs of the mechanical room, continuous circulation design and electrical system.

      Hello, Texas!!
I'm from Buffalo. All of the snow is pretty much all gone now, if you can imagine that. A few days of 40-50° weather, flood warnings, but it's just sitting in piles in certain places throughout WNY now, and the streets are clear. Despite all of the very unfortunate circumstances - it was a crazy but fun storm, (sketchy at times). But it teaches us how to better deal with these blizzards every time we go through it.

I was in junior high during the blizzard of 1977 and this blizzard far surpassed that one - with ferocity. Believe it or not, I remember higher drifts in 77 but the wind and the fact that it kept snowing…..and kept snowing…..and kept snowing with this storm was unreal. One of the few times I’ve ever been truly afraid of a weather event. Fortunate in that we didn’t lose power and our Christmas plans with neighbors still went on. Definitely one for the record books. My heart goes out to the families of those who perished.

Hello from Angola, NY! Great video! I’ve always wondered about if having a heated driveway would work! We were literally snowed in our house for 4 days. When we could finally get the back door open, and some melting started on the roof, my son came home after the driving ban was up, dug out the snowblower under one of our 3 collapsed garages! As he was talking a minute break from working he stood in the walkway my husband and I yelled out don’t stand there, if the roof snow gives you will be buried! No sooner said that and he moved and the entire snow that accumulated on the roof came down nearly burying him in 5 ft of snow! No one told us what a danger metal roofs could be yes they last forever but are quite dangerous if they slant to a sidewalk or doorway area! Scary! It was a storm to remember but not really one of the worst in my opinion! Snowvember in 2014 we got 7 ft and the Blizzard of ‘77 crippled a more vast area. I’ve experienced 4 in my lifetime! But, still not ready to move! Lol. It’s great living on the lake for the rest of the 3 seasons!

Fascinating, thanks.I’m here in northern California in the middle of an “atmospheric river,” getting pounded by rain - nothing like what you got in Buffalo but I used to have a cabin up in the central Sierra about 90 miles to the east of us at 7000 feet, and our average snowfall was 360 inches a year. One winter we got over 600”, much more than you get in Buffalo. One storm dropped 6 feet of snow in 4 days. The difference is we can drive down the mountain and get out of the snow.

If the furnace intake gets covered, the furnace might shut itself off as a safety measure due to lack of fresh air for combustion. For those who doubt this, if you have a furnace that has 90% or higher efficiency, then you will have an intake pipe; you can wait for the heat to kick in so that air is being sucked in by the intake, and then use a plastic bag to cover the intake opening outdoors (but don’t let the plastic bag get sucked into the pipe) - doing that will trigger that safety feature.

Hope you and your family were safe and had electricity! No one is allowed on any streets till it's been cleared of abandon vehicles, and the streets and roads cleared of as much snow as possible! And then, the heat wave comes tomorrow and into the new year weekend. Flood waters, oh my, more disasters after another! I think it ended up being only around 6 inches, but the drifts are something I haven't seen since 1978. I had to go out the front door to dig out the back door so my two Chihuahuas could go to the bathroom. They spent much of Friday going on puppy pads after I could no longer get the door open. The drift at the back door was at least 4 feet high. And the door had frozen shut. We had 4 inches of snow between our screens and the glass in our kitchen windows. It was a crazy storm. the winds were clocked at 74 MPH not far from here.

But even when you hire a service to plow your driveway, they can't get to everybody's house at once. And so you can't count on your driveway being done before you have to leave for work. The initial installation costs for this heated system obviously are significant, but running it doesn't seem that bad. And under the normal range of cold temperatures where we get a lot of snow, it would actually work just fine. It is unusual for these low single digit temperatures to also involve air masses with enough humidity for snow to form.

@@alan2112drums I got caught in a bad cycle of snow, freezing rain, snow, freezing rain... Everything was frozen solid for nearly two weeks. I started to notice a puddle backing up at the driveway entrance. I was concerned. Due to a failing street (rebuilt correctly since this event) the street melt was collecting at my place, instead of going down to the main street's drain grate. I had to bust ice from the gutter close to 100' down my block to the main street. Then, I had to unearth and chip out the drain grate. All of the water disappeared from the driveway once it had a place to go. I became extremely diligent watching and caring for that gutter during every storm after that.
I'd recommend walking your curbs and gutters to find all of the drains. It just takes one snow drift in the wrong place to start a lake in the wrong spot. I'd also work with the neighbor about a temporary soft dam placement at the end of his driveway during storms. Even just weighted down pool noodles. You just need something to delay the snow melt flow long enough for it to turn and go down the gutters.

Now that I know the issue exists, I will be even more diligent in monitoring it with ice melt and hard work! I'm sure my neighbor (and his kids) will help. They're great people. We got hit pretty badly in Eastern Ontario (Canada), but Buffalo was the worst. Your time lapse filming is incredible. We have a generator, but I was extremely thankful we didn’t lose our power (unlike my sister, 30 minutes east, who was out for 8 hours). Between weather and other issues, my Christmas Day went from 16 to 4. Sheesh. Goodbye 2022. You can take this crap weather with you when you leave. Holy crap…just got to the tree part. Yikes. We were worried about that, too. We are rural, and have two pines, a little smaller than this, near our house. Well done, for clearing the vents at 03:00, Chris. People tend to forget about vents - which can be deadly.

First thing I thought of reading all of these terrible results out of Buffalo was "I wonder how that dude with the driveway faired." Not the driveway itself, but you and your family. Thank you for telling the story of how you guys all banded together. That tree falling behind you looked so ominous - what would you guys do if you did lose power for any extended period of time? Do you have a generator?

Thanks Jacob! I’m humbled that you thought of my family and I when you heard about this. People like yourself are ones that I’m glad to have as subscribers on this channel. I could care less if I have 1,000 or 1,000,000 as long as they are all genuinely nice people interested in helping each other like we do here in this city / neighborhood. Waking up to that tree down was both mesmerizing and heartbreaking. Our neighbors behind us are great people and luckily were all ok. It’s even crazier to think that I was standing out there 10 minutes before it fell! For the power, I do have a generator and a connection on the garage that runs back to the main panel. The main panel has an interlock kit so I can power any circuit in the house. I will be doing a video soon on the Emporia whole house energy monitoring system so maybe I’ll show all of that! Thanks again for your kind thoughts and for watching my videos, I appreciate it!

Brings back memories. Driving a Tow truck For AAA and the police in the Lehigh Valley Pennsylvania back in the 90s when we got slammed like this. They shut down all roads except for emergency vehicles and us were temporarily emergency vehicles. I didn't get home for a week 😔 that was rough living out of that truck for a week. Good thing Wawa employees were stuck at work and I could still find food , coffee and a restroom. Being a wrecker driver didn't get you much respect. I had someone say it was a Bum job once. Funny thing I was making 5x what that person made and I had a company vehicle to drive and I didn't have it pay for ⛽⛽⛽ . I think he was just jealous my office was on wheels 👍👍👍👍 I feel sorry for the wrecker drivers in the buffalo area after this hit!!! 😔😔

I live in corpus Christi texas and in my 31 years we've only had snow maybe 2-3 times. Only once a significant amount. Maybe 6-7 inches. It was absolutely magical to experience. I'm sure having it all the time is a burden. But man, it sure is beautiful.

LOVE SNOW! When I was a kid in the ‘60’s up in Amarillo, we got snow like this all the time. They were just one-days, though. Then by the ‘80’s, we hardly ever got any snow. One day, I noticed there was a 2ft high drift at at the side of this house we were driving by. My pore kids were 5 and 6, and they had never even SEEN a drift! Asked that lady if my kids could play in her snow....they had a blast!❤️❤️🤪

It’s cheaper than paying for a plow guy and you don’t destroy your surface either. I like it.

    • @DeckerChristopherJ
      @DeckerChristopherJ  Před rokem +1

Not everyone will agree Oso, but I absolutely love it and I had a blast building it. After this storm the local plowing companies were charging between $100 and $300 to shovel people out, and that's for 1 plow. I spent $50 and mine was clear and dry and ready for the next event. No plow, no salt. To each their own, but I've been happy with it! Thanks for watching!
