    The problem is Nintendo seemed to at one point want to keep Donkey Kong Country as a separate universe. Hence why Cranky, Diddy and the other Country Kongs where never mentioned in Mario games. This also explains why Donkey Kong Junior would appear alongside Donkey Kong. When Donkey Kong appeared in games with Mario, the DKC retcons didn't exist and DK was just the same one from the arcades and had one son, Junior. But, Nintendo seemed to change their mind when the DKC games took off as well as they did and now made DK Country part of Mario's universe. Now Diddy, Cranky and other Kongs appear with Mario. This left Junior in a bad spot as he could not co-exist with Diddy, so given the Diddy was so much more popular, Junior was dropped. It's a similar story to the Koopa Kids of Mario Party, essentially Bowser Jr. Precursors getting replaced by Bowser Jr. Maybe we'll Dk Jr again some day, Pauline proves it's never too late to make an appearance.

    • @carmenherrera8812
      @carmenherrera8812 Před 3 lety +1

      @Pyro Flare It's not that people behind Nintendo are jackasses, it's more the fact that "original Donkey Kong being modern Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr being his son" has always been the intended continuity of Nintendo. Rare Ware just screwed up saying that it's actually Cranky Kong who is the original Donkey Kong, which doesn't allign the original canon continuity of Nintendo when it comes to Donkey Kong. Personally, I feel what RareWare did is a mistake. If it weren't for Rare doing this, Donkey Kong Jr could've still be in more Mario and Donkey Kong games. Rare could've kept the continuity that original Donkey Kong is Modern Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr is his son, as it should be.

    The Mario movie says that DK is the son of Cranky and not grandson, and honestly I prefer it that way because it implies that DK Junior was just DK as a child, which A) means he is still there right in front of our face and not missing for whatever reason while his dad and son get the spotlight, and B) greatly simplifies the genetic lore, so hopefully they'll keep that consistent from now on

    The simple answer: Modern DK is simultaneously the original DK, Donkey Kong Junior, and a totally new Kong. The characters have changed between totally separate developers without any concrete rules behind those characters' specific relationships with one another, so different developers treated those characters differently. Cranky was clearly established as the original DK, yet Mario Vs. Donkey Kong implies the modern DK to be the original DK. Thus, the true identity of DK is dependent on the individual game, with no possible series-wide consistency.

      In any case, SMB USA (following the lore laid out from the Yoshi's Island trilogy) was a dream Mario had. Some notable characters that do make cameos in the Mario spin-off (and noncanon) games, don't reappear in any other mainline Mario game (getting to Wart's cameo in Link's Awakening in second here) afterwards. Reason being that when we sleep and dream, the scenarios are subconscious plays out for us, often distorts things we see in them and taking that fact into consideration, characters like Birdo and Wart actually happen to be subconscious interpretations for Yoshi (egg regurgitation and jurassic similarities) and Bowser (both wetland like creatures, both use oral attacks, and both are kings), respectively. Shy Guys (Mario and co. adventures in Yoshi's Island) are the only exception to this though. On the topic of Wart's appearance in Link's Awakening, that game was also much like SMB USA, a dreamt up adventure Link had after his sailboat was wrecked in the storm for the opening scene of the game (picking up after the OoA/S true ending. Yes, I know they switched the placement of Link's Awakening BEFORE the Oracle titles, instead of the Hystoria canon for the Downfall timeline, but still, c'mon), so if anything, Wart's cameo is just an homage to SMB USA as they both partake in a dream. (Though Koholint Island disappears at the end, it doesn't prove that it never existed outside of Link's dream, as it shows up in its real form as an island in BotW, spelling /slightly/ different, much like with what I said about Birdo/Yoshi & Wart/Bowser interpretation.)

But also, the cannon of the Mario universe is weird, roles of character can shift in playing sports, their timeline jump around, and I think the past in Odyssey could even be pixels.

    The biggest reason diddy was used from double dash and forward and even why jr was orginaly planned, Was actualy becasue rare was bought by microsoft. Rare acted as a 2nd party to nintendo but they co-owned all original charcters in DKC series including diddy. This ment that if they where to use diddy outside a rare game nintendo had to pay royalties to Rare. So instead they tended to use jr instead. But when rare got bought out by microsoft in 2002 with it they lost all rights to the kong family and they where compeltly owned by nintendo. Allowing them to use the more regonizable and icon diddy.

    I see two paths to take here:
    1) The _Donkey Kong 64_ manual was a fluke, and Junior was always supposed to be the middle Kong.
    2) The lineage established by Rare was never noticed by Nintendo, and Junior was only officially made the middle Kong with the Retro games.
    Also, _Yoshi's Island 2_ can be ignored outright. (It's. . .not a good a game.)

  • @benmalsky9834

    Donkey Kong Jr.’s inclusion in Mario Tennis and his unused model in Double Dash has a very simple reason behind it. Diddy was treated and thought of as a Rare original character and it wasn’t until Rare’s acquisition by Microsoft that Diddy started appearing in non-Rare titles. Because of this, Nintendo could only use DK Jr. as a partner in various games and it’s possible had Rare stayed, it would have remained that way. As far as I’m aware, that explains why Diddy only appeared in Rare-developed titles until Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour.

    A pretty evenhanded look! Whenever i was about to disagree with something you said or scream at the video to refute it, you'd come along and make that same point (the "Baby Mario was also in Mario Tennis" bit).
    One thing: Cranky specifically mentions raising the modern DK in DKC Returns. "I didn't raise you in a barn!" This would imply the possibility that DK could be Cranky's (and Wrinkly's) biological grandson who was still raised by them when their actual son or daughter vanished or died. This is the "Missing Generation" theory, and it allows the modern Donkey Kong to be both DK Jr. AND the grandchild of Cranky.

    • @deletedTestimony
      @deletedTestimony Před 5 lety

      Holy duck, that makes more sense than anything. Grandparents often refer to adopted grandchildren as if they were direct children. It's possible in that regard for Cranky to be DK's grandfather and then also adopted father.
