I disagree in this particular case. There is a misguided belief that the general public have some right to their private journal. While I'm just as curious as to what motivated them, publicly releasing the manifesto in this case would provide no additional information to prevent other shootings. We know they were a socially awkward, troubled semi-outcast. If you're a family member of someone like this, you should know what to look for by now. Something her parents tried very hard to do, btw.
The only people who are really owed full disclosure are the victim's families.

Regardless of whether or not ALL the people can handle the truth, anything (any information, data, narratives, events, operations, agendas, etc) that affect the public/people should all be transparent (and provided) to the public. Anything else (including exemptions, exceptions, waivers, classifications..) allow for countless cover-ups, much corruption, tons of cronyisms, even criminality. Totally agree, the public, the people must know the truth (the whole truth), for anything that involves the people/public, or that may result in risks/consequences (or similar) for the people not knowing!
The Gov (or supporters/protectors or certain agendas & similar) saying "people can't handle the truth," is just cover/shield for them, as well as immunity from public questioning/scrutiny (and similar), and most of all "ACCOUNTABILITY!"

It's an editorial-style program, her job here is not to be objective it is to have an opinion and make a case for it (which is what Robby is also doing here except his opinions are sometimes different). I can see where she learned to argue this way -- this is what gets the highest marks in law school. No, I'm not kidding. Her one solid point was that the families of the victims have reason to request and have requested that the manifesto be kept confidential. The whole issue is whether that should prevent its disclosure. Documents like this can be redacted.

In my experience, often when info isn't released by the police, it's because they are protecting someone or something within the department and or process. FOIA allows that access. It's a manifesto. Protecting victims names etc, is nothing more than a stalling tactic for cover-up.

Someone with the police department needs to anonymously tell a journalist that it says there was rampant abuse and conversion therapy and that’s why the families don’t want to release it.

The public isn’t entitled to it because it’s not public.
Personally, I am curious about the manifesto. I think it reveals secrets about what happened at that school, but I don’t see how the public has any right to see any document found in someone’s house without permission. It’s borderline, arguably unconstitutional.

FOIA is for public documents. We know that the government has to have a specific warrant to search a home and they have to be specific about what they are looking for. A manifesto is not specific enough and we may want to know what's in it, but if it's in someone's house, we don't have any right to what's inside of it. The crime is complete. If she owned the house, I could see the argument, but since she didn't, I can't see how the government could justify releasing it without the parents permission and they are influenced by the school.
The fact that they don't want it released makes me want it released more, but I don't see how the government wins this. But, who know . . . there's always an argument that could work.

The public’s right to access publicly held information trumps the grieving parents’ feelings. If the shooter wasn’t killed, the public would gain access to this manifesto after the trial (or court proceedings - if they pleaded guilty).

The person being trans or not should have absolutely no barring on transparency, and the releasing of information.
I genuinely think we need to have a fourth branch of government that solely focuses on government transparency. It should be something similar to the judicial branch, with arbiters of magistrates that are appointed for life; and have jurisdiction to declassify and make public any government documents. In any disclosure scenario, the government agents pushing against disclosure would have to make their case that the documents do not show any government malfeasance, and that disclosing them would represent a credible threat to the safety and security of citizens. In a case like this, maybe a local or state level magistrate would make the decision about whether or not the manifesto or body cam footage would be released by the police. Maybe a supreme court level office would be hearing a case about UAP evidence right now as well, and another about the Epstein client list. When transparency is something that's written into the very architecture of our government, I think we will see a massive decline in government corruption and their abuse of state secrets.
Another branch of government would only lead to another corrupt branch of government. The answer is not more government it's less. For every person we add there's another person that's corrupt and more power that we've given to them.

I don't know why anyone would want a Manifesto kept under wraps. Some good journalists should be interviewing people who knew her and the school personally to help put the tragic events in some kind of context.
Actually, not releasing the truth is more dangerous than the opposite. If people know what caused this, it will bring awareness to prevent the next incident. Imagine if someone didn't tell you that there's a cliff ahead of the road. You might fall right into it. If the police decided it would be dangerous to release the manifesto, then it means that the truth is so appalling and may implicate someone important related to the case.

I bet the content makes the ppl at the school look bad so they don’t want it to come out. This seems like more of a personal vendetta and less of a political one. The ppl at the school knew the shooter and there is probably a complicated history there. I can see why they don’t want it released even tho I would love to see it.
There is no evidence of that at all. Obviously a mentally disturbed transgender individual is going to hate a Christian School and it's staff/students because they stand against her worldview.
