    One of the best quarantine projects I’ve seen. In the meanwhile aquarium accessory makers are probably going crazy about how much cheaper this solution is compared to what they have 😂

      True story. Commercial controllers cost hundreds easily. The reef-pi project could really use some more developers and a focus on making the UI a bit more foolproof. I've been able to get it into some bad states by deleting chips that have things configured etc.. should be checks to prevent that kind of bad state

    Before anyone comments - yea, I couldn't get a photo of the exact MeanWell I'm using for my lights. It's a MeanWell ELG-75-12B. I'm running the Raspberry Pi using a MeanWell LRS-50-12 which is what you see in the video towards the end.

    I would have suggested titling it "Intro to the Reef-Pi..." I would definitely be interested in a true "All About" video, though.

    I did this with an arduino a few years ago and it was a PITA. This seems a much easier way to get started. Waiting for the Pico to get back in stock, as it seems both products are sold out. It will be nice to see what other fun gadgets I can add to this.
    Thanks for the video.

      I'm glad you liked it. The reef pi software can be a little finicky, but there's lots of help out there and it works really well once you get it set up how you like.

    Way over my head 😂 but definitely enjoying your videos!

      Yea the reef pi is cool but it does take some effort and existing knowledge to get it set up. I wanted to present it though since I think not many people know that they've got this option.

    Not something I would be comfortable to use which is why I picked up a profilux. Had already started looking at the Pi for a camera which is another interesting use. Taking a picture of the tank a couple of times a day for example and then merging all the pictures together into a timelapse film can be really great to see your tank develop and corals grow. There's a youtube video somewhere showing several months worth of growth which was interesting. Yes, cameras are available to do the same thing but if you are investigating the Pi anyway...

      Yea, dart frogs are not nearly as touchy as Acropora. I am glad that I'm able to try it out on their tanks instead of on my reef.

      It's a really nice controller. I'm looking forward to building another one using some new boards from BlueAcro that will be out in the coming weeks 🤞

    If I wanted to hook up 2-3 optical sensors and 3 small DC pumps, what would my most straightforward option be?

    Thanks for the video. I am wanting to build a 8 channel doser and decided to diy. Just wondering if I can use raspberry pi 4 as opposed to your instructions on reef2reef. Thanks

    I love your project, reef-pi is really awesome, have reef-pi ever made a journal? or published a journal?

      Not that I know of, but you could ask on this GitHub project - they are pretty responsive to questions and comments there.

    Great info! I had no idea about those other boards. Can you share how you did the 0 to 10 volt circuit? I've been looking at some solutions and been putting things together but not quite there.

      To be honest it's a bit magic to me too. I'll diagram out what I've done, and it works perfectly. I'll get a link to that for you soon.

    • @ReefMan
      @ReefMan  Před 4 lety +1

      Here's the diagram I think.
      crcit.net/c/c46245c99c604a8db524b86e899e44e5
      The resistor values are not specific, but you do need one to be higher than the other. Where the LED is in the diagram is where I've got the 10V PWM out connecting into the MeanWell driver. The negative on the driver is all just connected to the same ground as the mosfet and the raspberry pi.
      Hopefully this will get you started. I'd very much recommend using a breadboard to get it working before you solder things down.

    Do you have a video of this on your vivs? Besides lighting what does it control?

    • @ReefMan
      @ReefMan  Před 4 lety

      I don't really. It controls ventilation fans, misting, and tracks the temperature and humidity.

  • @monicalooze1
    @monicalooze1 Před 3 lety

    How did you decide on the Leviathan? I've been comparing Leviathan, robo-tank, and the blue acro controllers vs. doing it myself. Thoughts on what's best and why with a bit more detail? I know you used it for a vivarium, so that may be why you chose leviathan, but there are so few reviews out there as they are all so new. Thanks!

    • @ReefMan
      @ReefMan  Před 3 lety

      BlueAcro makes some really nice reef pi hardware controllers. I'd probably go with them if I was starting a new setup as it's already wired

      @@ReefMan Just watched this again and realized you used goby hat, not leviathan. This is what happens when I go down the youtube rabbit hole for too long!! Thanks. I'm going to hope they come back in stock soon.

      I would recommend asking on their github issues, it their Reef2Reef DIY thread. Those are the ways I was able to get info to get mine working.
