The Magic of Minecraft's Music

- Minecraft is a wonderful game for many reasons. You have unparalleled creative freedom, years of incredible developmental support and attentive community management, and a wonderfully positive-though sometimes childish-audience. However, the entire essence of the game is reliant on something every Minecraft player has grown to love. A constant that subtly narrates your gameplay, keeps you calm when a creeper kills you far from home, and provides the undertones that cement the heart and soul of Minecraft into each and every player.
Of course, I’m talking about Minecraft’s genius soundtrack, composed by German Musician Daniel Rosenfeld, better known as C418. When he teamed up with Notch in the earliest days of Minecraft, he wasn’t established in the music scene. In many ways, he was still an amateur. But as Minecraft exploded, his competence was recognized. People absolutely loved it. But despite the recognition that the music got and has gotten over the years, I still believe the score is grossly underrated. Without the music, Minecraft just isn’t the same, which is something that can only be said about a handful of games. In fact, I believe Minecraft’s music is one of the absolute best in the history of video games, rivaling even legendary titles like Tetris and Mario. While people understand the quality, there’s much more to be uncovered beneath the surface, like how, even after hundreds of hours it doesn’t get old, how it perfectly creates an atmosphere for a game with an ambiguous atmosphere, and how it creates more nostalgia than any other soundtrack I’ve encountered. So, stay tuned, because today I’m going to walk through why, exactly, Minecraft’s music is so incredible.

The worst thing about nostalgia is that you can never go back
Why is this so true? 😢❤
Best thing nostalgia is that reminds you how times were, even if you didn't realize it in the moment.

You can be poor and happy or rich and miserable. Mental state of how you view the world really is all up to you.
Obviously there are exceptional cases which are the exceptions.
As you get older friends leave and family passes away. You get lonelier and lonelier as you get older as you find it harder and harder to connect to a changing and colder world. Nostalgia is very real guys because honestly those were the best years of your life.
Now all you can hope to do is have children too one day, so you can give them a childhood for them to be nostalgic about later.
Just imagine how nostalgic Minecraft's soundtrack will be 10 more years from now.

Nah. Imagine sitting there, old and withered, in front of the fireplace. You think of the long life you lived and all the friends you’ve lost. Then you hear it, Mice on Venus starts playing in back..you remember those blissful nights mining for those shiny blue diamonds with not a care in the world. You wish you could just go back to the time you placed your very first block. The song ends and the crackling of the fire takes it place. For me personally, after years of playing this game, Mice on Venus now feels like an anthem dedicated to the memories all of us have made playing this game, whether they be good or bad, alone or with friends. I can't help but tear up every time i hear the song in its climax, as if the final chord itself is speaking: "And here you are, after all this time. Never forget how much of an effect this game has had on your life. You have all these memories, and you can still make more." The music as a whole invokes such a sense of nostalgia in me, and I'm sure I'm not alone. After all the time I have had with this game, I cannot help but feel peace and safety in myself. The music is just so powerful. We may now have Lena Raine making the newer music for Minecraft, but Minecraft would never had been Minecraft if it weren't for Daniel Rosenfeld.
The feeling can't be described better than that. Whole heartedly agree.
I just learned it on a piano and oh my God it's so relaxing and nostalgic. The feeling of playing it instead of listening also has just a different vibe and feeling

Minecraft’s soundtrack take me back to when I was a kid. I played on the PS3 with my little sister. We made so many worlds together. Each world held memories that both of us don’t remember now, but still remember us playing. Every single day would be us playing. I’d always be the one to mine and do the difficult things in a minecraft world, while she was the more laid back one. She built many things. As the years passed, she matured into a different person. I’m very glad for her, but Ive also matured. The more i grew, the more I became in love with games. Sometimes she’d ask if we could play, Id say no. I neglected her so many times she doesn’t even ask anymore. Now, I realize that I would regret my decisions as she does not want to play with me at all. Everytime I play by myself or with another person and the soundtrack plays, I get sad, knowing that our old days are over, and she’s maturing. I know it’s just a soundtrack, but it really gives me nostalgia. She was and always will be my minecraft partner. Please take this as a lesson to spend time with your siblings as soon as you can, and do not take it for granted.

I don’t remember most of my life due to dissociative amnesia. The few childhood memories I do have are either from severe trauma, or my happiest memories which all consist of my time playing Minecraft. I had been playing since 2009 when grass block graphics consisted of very minimalistic and outlined green and brown hues that stuck true to the block feel. I had a rough childhood but I found my only comfort in playing Minecraft for hours on end with my online friends on teamspeak and Skype. The most nostalgic memories I have in my entire life date to around 2013-2015 or so. My entire childhood genuinely was Ssundee, BajanCanadian, Stampylonghead/nose, CaptainSparklez, etc. these creators will never understand truly how important what they have done is. This game and these people who worked thousands of hours on their content are the only reason I’m alive today :’). I’ve been through a lot in my life (though I am still quite young I’d like to think and have a lot to do) but truly I can’t appreciate where I am now in life without being so unbelievably grateful for this game. Every time I hear the music it makes me cry and cry and cry because I’m reminded of the the few moments of absolute peace I had in my otherwise unlivable life at the time. I never wish to return to my childhood, but I do wish so dearly to find something that makes me feel the way I felt when playing back then, again.
I seriously can’t emphasize how important this soundtrack and this game and everything it embodies means to me. And I doubt I ever will be able to. Thank you for everything you have done for me Minecraft ❤

In my opinion, the best thing about minecraft's music is that one second, its quiet, but then next second your listening to a song at its climax, it's a really hypnotizing experience

C418 seems to understand how to use silence, something not found often in well-known contemporary music. His other tracks don't use it as much, but it's still certainly there.

Is this why when I walk into the living room I yell at my son about the volume?! He swears he isn't touching it and I'm like that's on full blast??!!!!
@@megmellas6887 the problem is he isnt touching it, it shouldnt be *that loud*, just go options, volume, then turn music down

Yes. It's now time to have a kid and make sure they get an even better childhood than you :)
bro ur video is a masterpiece i now came back to this 4 the third time cause ur voice is so relaxing and fitting to that deep dive into that magic you talk about. I love the songs so much that i hear them to fall asleep and a video like this was litterly what i wanted so bad and didnt even know i do. Thanks meraki ❤
Words can't describe the way Minecraft makes you feel. It's like you're instantly teleported into your younger self, when you didn't have responsibilities, or stress about money, or anxiety about the world ending, and it's just peaceful. I want this to be playing at my funeral.
One thing I love is that I almost never notice when a song comes on, it blends right into the background, and subtly adds incredible beauty.
this makes me feel nostalgic :(
the new music mid
thats exactly the reaason why c418agreed to licence music to notch
I always notice the music when it appears, but when I notice it it's always because of the nostalgia... There'll be a sea of Lena Raine and Kumi Tanioka music and then there's just the hit of Sweden or Mice on Venus and it's just amazing.
I didnt expect that a gucci model talks about minecraft music, lol
right?? he showed his face and i went "oh shit-"
i forgive him
Fucking same lol
I saw this comment before I saw his face and was thinking he’d look all photoshopped and crazy looking but he looks like a normal dude. At least to me he does but I’m also not attracted to dudes so maybe that has to do with it also.
@@asylumrain I'm also not attracted to dudes, but I can recognize an attractive person on sight
This has given me too much nostalgia and I have never felt more empty knowing the moments are gone, thank you so much for the video
The music of Minecraft is different than any other game's. When I hear Minecraft's songs I dont feel like I'm just pressing buttons and staring at a screen...I feel like I'm actually having fun
C418 is wildly underrated it's crazy
underrated? 👀
I honestly find it incredibly hard not to cry based on how much nostalgia runs through me.
he literally has millions of views on almost every one of his songs wdym underrated lmfao

random words are going to be in this be warned so if your tired of minecraft being relaxing get the "epic siege mod" and some form of hardcore darkness mod (would suggest 1.7.10) you will not be relaxed you will be scared you will not trust the game which can be fairly nice with the minecraft music because you have peace mixed with being scared dont know it feels good

Just got recommended this video and man am I lucky to watch such an amazing video, you really did a great job at this analysis and the way you used the music as examples is just great. Minecrafts music will always be one of the greatest game soundtracks to ever exist.
imagine after dying irl you will be greet with c418 sweden and then someone starts talking and saying "you have completed your journey, now it's time for you to rest, stranger" JUST IMAGINE
"wet hands" "dry hands" and "mice" are my fave, also, what makes them better, is when you hear a "moooo" or "oink" or a "maaaaa" in the background
Sweden is great
Moog City is a favourite
I actually like key a lot, although I'm not sure why.
Wet hands is my favorite
Sweden and Mice on Venus feels the most nostalgic to me out of all the soundtracks
I cannot listen to a single Minecraft song without crying. I don’t think this is necessarily because of my nostalgia with the game, but more about things that happened around the time that I played the game. I wish I could go back. I wish I could feel the way I felt at that time again. I miss it.
T_T
I feel both
When I hear minecraft soundtrack, it makes me feel nostalgic, and same for other, because we wish we could go back to an easier time, we had no worries, no stress, we were just able to logon and play, just like stampy and all the other you tubers, their channels may have thought to have died, but *we just grew up*

these songs are so nostalgic and they make a boring task enjoyable, for example when mining it can be boring but as soon as the music comes on it just makes the task more enjoyable

Started playing in like 2010-2011 and the first three hit like trucks emotionally for me. Friends I no longer have but wish I had retained. Friends come and go but memories remain. Despite being painful, I always manage to be happy because I have those memories, despite how bittersweet they may be. Played it religiously until about 2018-2019 and I still dabble in it here and there but I can barely bear to play anymore due to becoming so depressed and sad after about an hour. I will always respect this game for all my life but it’s simply not the same for me anymore.
Minecraft music tells you that you are alone by accompanying you on your journey, through which you are no longer alone.
