  • Welcome back to the Scale Modelling Cafe, and welcome to the final part of the 1:48 Airfix Lightning F.Mk 2. In this episode, I do a little bit of weathering before bringing together the dangle bits before the final reveal.

Nice looking bird and you bring the weathering together nicely. First time i've seen close ups of the venerated Airfix 1/48 Lightning in a vid like this - accurate in shape I gather but unmistakably airfix once you get inside a few feet! One tip for you / your viewers for when removing masks - you run an unnecessary risk of scratching your clear parts using tweezers; use a shaved / cut cocktail stick or toothpick to make a a chisel type finish, and then insert this to get underneath; tweezers can then be used to pull the mask away once you have a decent edge. PS there are super / CA glues which will not fog your clear parts if you are ever looking for a stronger bond; look out for glues which are labelled as 'foam safe' or 'non-blooming'. Thanks again for the vid - inspiration for my 1/32 beast which awaits my bench! Kind regards, Nick.

HI mate, I do often use a cocktail stick to remove masks but often I get lazy, luckliy I've never damaged the clear bit despite the risk. I'm aware of these glues but having used them, and still got fogging I avoid them. The Ammo glue is effectively a resin, dries crystal clear, the excess can be wiped away with a damp fingertip and dries rock hard with a solid bond so works for me.
Good luck with the 1:32 build.

I do like the honesty and 'warts and all' openess of your builds, Jamie! 👍🏻 I always use a cocktail stick around and clear parts, it usually works a treat without scratching. Great vid, making me really tempted to build my own big airfix lightning F6 (though I always suspected the kit is a tad over-rated) now! 🤤👏🏻

Thanks Peter. To be honest, I prefer the precision of the tweezers despite the potential risk of marring the clear parts. All I'll say of the Lightning is it's a kit of it's time, think mid-90's Hasegawa with a bland interior.

Nice one Jamie, I've had this in the stash with all the odds and bods for ions and haven't got around to it. Bit if inspiration, this build.

Gorgeous model...!! Great ideas, and you sold me with AK's Ultra Glue. Already ordered a bottle. Great to know the new generation of Alclad paints coming. Now I'm looking forward to find an Airfix F. 3 1/48...Thanks again, Jamie.

If I can get hold of one, I'm inspired to do it again. I did the F6 when it first came out, and would like to believe I could do it a bit better, now. It ended up with a friend of mine who was a Lightning pilot, although he flew the F1 and F3, so not really appropriate for him.

Nice one Jamie. Do you pour heavily thinned paint back in the jar like the hull red you used? Im asking because some of my tamiya paints are getting very thin now .
I had this kit years ago I used humbrol metallic enamels then glossed coated it and the paint turned gloopy I threw it at the wall. I really must have another go one day.
