- John Sellars is one of the leading scholarly authorities on Stoicism and is a professor of philosophy at the University of London.
In this discussion we explore why the ancient Stoics described their philosophy as an "art of living," how key ideas in Stoicism go back to Socrates, how Stoicism differs from modern philosophy, and what the ultimate goal of Stoic philosophy actually was (and still is).

That was a FANTASTIC discussion. It seemed to clarify a question I have had in my mind: did the Romans / Greeks have a concept of “sin” - or was it only introduced with the adoption of Christianity in Western Civilisation?
Just heard John in his talk with Modern Stoicism (Marcus Aurelius 1900th birthday talk). He should do ab audiobook for every stoic book, it's very nice when he's pacing himself :)
I apply stoic lifestyle philosophies and also believe in a transcendental God. Also, I love Taoism. My mindset is open, yet attached to nothing.
Really good video. Thank you so much.
