  • Toyota is working on some next-level electric car technology that could change the game forever… And it’s all to do with solid-state batteries!
But why is this technology so important? Well for starters, let’s take a look at lithium-ion batteries.
Any electric car on our roads in 2023 come including a lithium ion battery. And even though they’re included in any new electric car, they’re not exactly perfect. Not only are they super large, but they also lose a bit of capacity each time you charge them. Not only that, but they get hot when they’re being charged, and they only deliver peak power in a certain temperature window.
So that’s where solid-state batteries come in. They don’t have any of these issues, and their technology helps to prevent overheating. What’s more, whereas large lithium ion batteries can take hours to charge, solid-state batteries can charge much faster! They’re also smaller and lighter, and electric motors will be able to pull more power quickly - helping make cars powered by these batteries quicker!
So this technology sounds pretty futuristic, but Toyota has been working on it for over 10 years, and we may see solid state batteries sooner than you think! What’s more, this own’t just be in your standard family-friendly SUVs and saloons… It will also be included in an all-new, all-electric replacement for the Lexus LFA!!

I've had this same idea for a simulated manual transmission for years. Similar to how a digital guitar amplifier can simulate the tones of various tube amps, I have always thought that it should be possible to have an EV simulate the torque curves of various ICE engines. I even had the idea that you can simulate a stall. Imagine being able to select your car modeling the experience of an N/A vs turbo vs supercharged in a flat-6, V8 or V12. I am astounded that Toyota/Lexus is actually doing this. I should have patented my idea. I wonder if they will also simulate in-cabin engine sounds. If done properly, and with improvement over the years, it could be so good as to be close to indistinguishable from the real experience. Even if not, I am so glad someone is out there thinking about preserving the driving experience in future cars. I honestly thought it would be Porsche that would do something like this first.

@@pihermoso11 The Lightspeed transmission is also very cool allowing a car to be both an automated multi-clutch and a manual. It's different though as that system is actually selecting real gears by actuating various clutches and the system that Lexus is suggesting seems to be purely simulated. But both are great innovations which will hopefully preserve some of the spirit of traditional driving.

There's just something inherently pure about a well built ICE engine. Nothing to knock EV sports cars, they are just mind melting in terms of speed and handling. But for someone who says they aren't connected to a stick shift ICE classic sports car with the windows open and the real induction and exhaust sound of actual mechanical parts interacting, they just don't get it. Same as with people who love horses, there is a relationship we petrolheads form with a real stick shift ICE car other's just don't get. It doesn't have to be fossil fuel either, E85-100 and synthfuels are fine also. There is just that connection between man and machine that can't be broken for some of us.

All batteries will degrade over time. From what I’ve heard about solid state batteries in testing, there are some that will have an exponentially slower rate of degradation to the point of allowing the batteries to be reused after the vehicle itself can no longer work. The life cycle of the battery will have the potential to outlast the vehicle multiple times over. How much that changes when it makes it to production is my big question but overall it seems to have more upsides than downsides

Secondly, due to heating constraints of the charger and battery, chargers fluctuate from peak to lower than peak to ensure safety and may in reality average out closer to 200kwh over the charging period. Perhaps solid state will make these numbers a bit better but I wouldn't be surprised if 20minutes is probably pretty close to the estimate for charging 70kwh with current 350kwh chargers.
