- We review and celebrate the long gone Lexus LFA, a car briefly made from 2011-2012. With only 500 manufactured, this extremely rare and largely misunderstood car, has mystique. We attempt to break down and tell the story of what made it special. The LFA despite the badge speaks a universal language. Whether you are a Ferrari, Porsche, Chevy or Ford fan there is something in this video you will appreciate. If you are big fan of the Toyota Supra, 86, LC500, F Products you may wonder if this Lexus is the next $1,000,000 car?

@Akiz Biri I heard the car was a financial flop for 400k a piece, perhaps they should have sold it for 600k.
@Akiz Biri you can’t sell a car for less than what it cost to make.
@@turbopickle9720 That's true to a point, but there are economies of scale when you produce more than 500 cars. Toyota absolutely could have brought this car to price parity if they'd looked at a longer term timeline with it.
@@turbopickle9720 this is true but most of the cost comes from the development, not the production which actually makes the car more expensive to make than to sell. Cars are expensive because of how much they cost to develop. To really make a profit you have to recoup the cost of developing the car in the first place, the production is quite inexpensive relative to the R&D that goes into it. It's why mass production, affordable cars, share platforms and platforms are generally speaking updated rather than fully redeveloped when a new generation is released. The price is based not just on the cost of production but also the expected sales of the car, as well as the amount produced relative to the goal that is making a profit over the development costs. It's why less manufacturers are developing manual sports cars, because they don't feel the millions, sometimes billions, of dollars spent developing the car is going to make a real profit. It's why the Mk5 supra was a joint project between BMW and Toyota, same with the BRZ/86 between Toyota and Subaru. Honestly Lexus probably could've lowered the cost by increasing production and making them for longer, but it's possible they weren't equipped to produce the car at a larger scale and that still doesn't mean people would have bought it. Your brands image plays a large role, and Lexus isn't particularly known as an expensive Supercar brand. Most people walking into a Lexus dealer aren't looking to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars.
@Akiz Biri with the new GR Super Sport hyper car coming out I think they still do!

When a LFA used to be $500k. The world finally appreciates this masterpiece of a vehicle. it's almost impossible to believe that there were 2 unsold examples in 2019 just sitting in dealerships.
A masterpiece of engineering indeed. However, it lacked pedigree, history and the design was/is too cautious. I’m not surprised there were unsold examples. It will take time and docs like this for people to truly understand what it is all about. And even after all that happens, the vehicle will never have a Ferrari or Lamborghini aura. In stead, it will remain an honorable mention.

germans: play synthetic rev sounds in cabin
japan: sends engine to yamaha.
Bingo
Yamaha motors is an engine manufacturer who in this case send the engine to their musical department, that makes guitars, pianos and whatnot.
Here's the back story from someone who was in the piano biz. After WWII America assisted Japan in getting back on its feet, to reduce the possibility of Russian influence turning them communist. To that end, the U.S. government contracted New York piano maker Steinway to assist the Japanese in restarting their labor-intensive piano manufacturing industry. The result was two Japanese brands, Yamaha and Kawaii, which eventually became the world standard of excellence in mass-produced pianos.

It warms my heart to see a full-length documentary on the Lexus LFA - my favourite car of all time. No production car sounds better than the V10 that this car was blessed with. Even Jeremy Clarkson agrees with me ;)
I saw one on the freeway once. I was on my GSX-R1000 coming up behind it and wondering what lovely car that was with it's massive vents and triplex exhaust. Then they hit the brakes and surprised me with how quickly it could scrub speed for a sudden exit maneuver. I've never seen one since, until now.
So here is this wonderful love song to the LFA. I tried fast-forwarding through the video at first. Forty-eight minutes is a lot of time. But every jump I discovered I missed something and had to roll back. Eventually, I just settled in for the duration, even pausing to read the detailed documentation graphics that didn't always match the commentary. This is dense. So much detail on how the LFA came to be. So much I never knew. I remember hearing that Yamaha piped audio into the cabin to make the LFA exhaust note more magnificent. I assumed that meant stereo amplification assistance like too many cars do these days. Was I ever wrong. What they've done with this car is magical. Now I need to find one to drive.
Thank you so much for this documentary. I really enjoyed watching.

and those engineers were inexperience, hence why it was delayed and even when released a Ferrari half it's cost performed better in every single ,metric.
No ferrari had just developed a platform that was new then ,so it cost a lot of money but then reused the platform as 488 and as F8 tributo .. cost drop significantly .. it is still aluminum and still way cheaper to produce than the LFA chassis
@@asterioslytsioulis4226 yes they further modified and refined the 458 platform for the later models. How does this have any bearing to the LFA(2010) and the 458(2009). You know if Toyota keep further developing and updating the LFA with later models who knows what could have been. 1 billion is a small loss. It cost Ferrari 7 billion to develop the 458 platform. You have to spend serious money to compete at this level. Heck the 2016 Alfa Guilia&Stelvio Quadrifoglio platform cost them 5 billion to develop by Ferrari Skunk works.

This car was also designed like over a decade ago so old styling is expected
Yes most of the car at that time is now have a timeless design... like one-77, koenigesgg agera, lfa, huayra. And I'm talking about the first models not upgraded version of them.
The LFA and the quality of this video... Pure mastery of the art! Thank you for such an interesting, exhaustive treat.
loved this video , gives me pride that i once worked in Toyota (Philippines) for at last 25 years.
The quality of this video is outstanding, look like something from Lexus documentary 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I can't imagine the amount of work that went into producing this film. I want to burn it to a disk so I can archive it, this video and the Miata series.
Thomas except the MX5 is not exactly collectible and increasing in value.
This is a car that definitely deserved the Savageese treatment.
@@kenim The LFA most certainly did. The MX5, eh, not so much. One is long in the tooth (LFA) and the other is fighting against time and BEVs.
This video was absolutely exceptional on many levels. My favorite was the story behind this man getting his LFA
What a production from the making of the car to the video, and to the experience you gave us as viewers.Gotta be one of the best car reviews I've ever seen.👍
The Lexus LFA is a "Once in a Lifetime" automobile, Unique in All the World.
Very true
One of the greatest cars ever made.
whilst it is undoubtedly an engineering master piece and right at the top of my list, I dont consider it an all time great because it didn't offer anything new or even remotely ground breaking, which from Japanese company with an unlimited price and budget was a big disappointment for me.
They talked it up as being an incredibly lightweight, with an engine revving too fast for analogue equipment which was horseshit.
I never compare cars on numbers but Toyota fell short of their claims.
Porsche had a V10 4 year previous with more power and torque and same displacement. it had an automate manual, when double clutch was common place, it produced the same power as n/a rivals at half the price and it wasn't any lighter.
@@dagnut All cars are 4 wheels on platforms. They all don't offer anything new to society. The LFA does what it does especially well therefore it is one of the all-time great cars.
@@trinkie who gives a fuck about society? I'm talking about performance. A 350k lexus should have been a technical marvel.
@@dagnut who says it isn't. The car is a masterpiece at sound while not have any electronic enhancers. And it wasnt supposed to have groundbreaking shit either because you don't make groundbreaking shit on order you make it when you do and then make it into some product. This was more of an entry into the supercar market and I would consider it the best one at in its class so its not groundbreaking but a really good car. LS was groundbreaking with led lights and self-parking features but people still didn't like and I think they learned their lesson. Build a brand first and only then people will buy it.
@@reenachauriya4931 I followed this car in magazines from around 2000 and yeahbit was supposed to be groundbreaking. Toyota where talking about the lightest materials and the highest n/a power weight f1 derived tech...blah blah
Already one of my favorite cars but this just added to my love for it even more. Well done. Really enjoyed learning more about the details that often go I looked.
Amazing video as always! This channel is the standard and above to any car video on CZcams. Please keep up the informative and entertaining content!🙏👏
That exhaust note alone is worth everything. I get goosebumps every time I hear an LFA exhaust note.
That's why I'm using yamaha bikes for 16 years, love that 3cyl crossplane engine sound...it's nowhere near LFA but...😉🤷
I've seen exactly one of these in person in my life, and when it drove by -- even at slower city speeds -- it sounded like an F1 car.
@@Jason-se1ke I heard this car coming at me on my KTM superduke 990 with open arkapovic race pipes. The LFA make my snap my neck back when we passed each other. Glorious.
that's absolutely true!! its exactly what happens to me every time i see an LFA video ! i have driven so many super cars! i own 1000hp gtr34 and still nothing moves me like LFA music
Thank you for documenting the car I will buy one day
Can’t wait to see the paint job inside the door of your LFA
Hope you get to review one soon 🤞
one more lfa in canada fck yeah
I came here to see if you guys commented, I am not disappointed.
You better make a video about it when you do!
It’s a car that’s build with logic and calculations but the output is pure emotions!
He made sure this video have the same league of attention to details as LFA itself. Praise the geese.
"I hit subscribe by accident. My life improved by 1.6%" - biggest lol of this decade.
Your work and effort you put into these videos is second to none.
Your energy together and your channel are so wonderfully unique. Unabashedly nerdy and relaxing. Intoxicating really. Thank you guys.
I’ve read small details about this car here and there, but never anything that really painted a true picture of its technical development and the human story. Until today. A shame they never did more with it, but maybe that’s why it’s such a powerful story and maybe you need stories like these to elevate a brand like Lexus above the ordinary. Thank you to everyone who made this video possible. They should play it in every Lexus dealership!
Watch the National Geographic mega factory documentary on this car also amazing
Japanese Engineering: We teamed up with a legendary music company and engineered a solution that gives drivers maximum aural pleasure and feedback
German Engineering: We pipe fake noise through the speakers
Remember when German engineering was das beste?
@@ADUSN of all three options das is probably the best one
Depends on how you would translate engineering
Ingenieuring isn't a word
Maybe Ingenieurwissenschaften? In that case die is correct
But I'd say Ingenieurswesen would be the better term
You must add "current" german engeneering. It was not like that in the day of the LFA. In 2010 when the LFA came out, BMW was still making V10 M6/M5, no fake noise, high-revving NA 5 liter V10. Sounding awesome. Then it all went to the gutter, with turbos and particle filters....
@@daliborpuchta1952 True. AMG also had had the 5.5L and 6.3L V8 engines. MMMMmmmm
@@PinHeadSupliciumwtf the word you’re looking for is “die Technik”
lol ever heard of porsche?
This has to be one of my fave "car review" videos ever. Amazing depth with an amazing built machine. Nice job!!!
I'm still amazed at how well this video was made
Guys, This video is absolutely marvelous! You’ve show us exactly why so many petrolheads are in love with this masterpiece. Tons of respect for you and professionals creating this beauty. 🙏🏻
when toyota and yamaha team up, legendary engines happen.
So true. If only they'd done more with Yamaha for the GT86 or the MKV Supra
I got a 3S-GTE in a Corolla. But life didn't turn out quite supportive of keeping that dream alive, so it's idle in a garage and the world is getting shittier every day.
@@Dowlphin I still want to throw a 3SGTE in an old Alltrac Camry. Hard to find them though.
@@rob_over_9000 Wow, I didn't know AWD Camry was a thing. I can understand why they would be hard to find, since it's even more of a keeper with that supreme snow driveability.
Do you know by any chance whether the
@@Dowlphin Toyota only put LSDs in the 1993-1995 MR2 Turbos. E153 transmission. Monkeywrench sells them for $3500. At that point it may be cheaper and easier to just put an aftermarket LSD in an existing 1MZ-FE Camry E153. A Quaife or Kaaz is a little over a grand.
YOU FILLED MY HEART WITH JOY WATCHING YOU DRIVE IT AND APPRECIATE THE LOVE OF LEXUS LFA AND ENDING THE VID IN A LEXUS YOU DRIVE. GREAT VIDEO. GOD BLESS YOU!
So much complicate design of this masterpiece salute to hard worked japanese engineers who made this marvel
Wow. I don't think I've ever seen an underbody as beautiful as this. The whole suspension setup is borderline insane for a road car. I always thought the LFA was all about the engine, so this was unexpected, to say the least. Really impressive stuff.
The LFA still is the best sounding road car ever created. This is a car that will forever be remembered and revered by enthusiasts. Tanahashi did such an outstanding job.
I will personally make a trip to that dealership just to lay my eyes on their LFA...
Absolute fabulous video mate.
Thoroughly enjoyed the engineering side and that harmonious exhaust sound.
The production quality of this channel is just other worldly. Amazing content guys. Bravo. 👏
The anticipation for this video was immense. I don't even want to watch it on my phone. This is going straight to the big screen. Thank you for the time and effort you put into these amazing videos. I always walk away with more knowledge on the car, and a good idea as to what it's like to drive.
This
I got my drink, turned down the lights, put on headphones, turned the volume up and got lost in an amazing video about the one dream of mine that never went away for all these years since it came out.
Preach
Yeah I had to do it justice and play it on my big screen tv.
