How to return to inline or quad skating after an injury or fall when you've lost your confidence?

  • This question from Min in Adelaide is one I am frequently asked as it's very common after a bad fall or injury to completely lose your confidence and feel anxious and nervous when you return to skating, even after you've healed.
Your body remembers the trauma of the fall or injury even though you may be super excited and wanting to start skating again.
The return from injury pathway needs to be carefully planned and you need to go at your body's pace and listen to the hesitation that it will display. This needs honouring.
You should plan to return slowly, as if starting skating from scratch (but don't worry you'll progress much faster than any first timer), but I do recommend going through all the beginner level skills and really cementing the fundamentals and building strong foundations skills, such as stopping methods and basic stride work.
Your body needs convincing that this crazy sport is safe again and the way to do that is with confident basics, no wobbles and certainly no falls in the first few months. This takes patience as you'll want to quickly rush to where you were at before the accident, but this will hinder your progress and possibly set you back further if you have another fall in this critical stage.
This is when an online course giving you a series of progression exercises for each skill would be super recommended, as this would build your confidence, give you achievable and tangible goals each time you skate and reduce the risks of falling as you return. You will then end up a much better skater than you were before your accident.
Check out and use for free any of the beginner online courses listed below to help you return from injury safely and consciously, reaching the risks and building your confidence, one skate at a time.

Thanks. I REALLY needed this, since I didn't skate for 6 months due to suffering a knee injury that required physical therapy, following with abdominal surgery. I fell in a parking lot, so I was skittish about skating in one again. After going to an outdoor rink, I finally got the courage to go back to the parking lot, using ski poles for balance. The 3rd time, I was able to skate without ski poles. Baby steps, but I'm getting my confidence back!

Well done for recognising that baby steps is the way forwards. May I recommend you watch my full length beginner starter pack of 2 videos to really make sure you are doing the basics (knee bend and body position) correctly. There's a bunch of info there that I don't share in any of my CZcams videos which I think could completely change how you approach your return to skating. I also think it would help you redirect your attention to the soles of your feet so you know exactly where your weight should be to ensure you never fall again.
Click Free Trial on this page to get those 2 videos. I really hope they add some detail to your focus.
