I remember riding in these Newark PCC's in the 1960;s when my mother would take us to downtown Newark every two to three weeks, and ride these great trolleys. They were operated by Public Service and wore different colors at the time, but they were the same workhorses, day after day. The cars were painted gray on the roof, and with an off white on the top section to the base of the windows with gray along the lower sections, with a blue stripe along the belt line just below the windows, and they were beautiful. The front headlight was painted red and this paint scheme was my favorite of all used on the #7 line. Taking the trolley to Bamberger's Department Store, at the Washington Street Station, was my favorite destination, along with Kresgees Department Store, S. Kleins, Hahnes, and having lunch at the Chock-Full-Of-Nuts restaurant on Broad Street! Ah, the good old days of Newark!

NJT 10 is now in service with us here in San Diego as PCC 530. He runs great, I ride all the time! Neat to see him in his NJT livery, working the rails back then!

Great film work of the Newark City Subway before LRVs and pantographs. Unusual photo angles and locations make this video really enjoyable. Hard to believe it's been 14 years since the PCCs have been retired.

Used to ride this line with my mom and sometimes aunt and cousins downtown back in the 90’s. My grandparents had a house up on North 3rd St which not far from Orange St. I used to love riding on it. Last time I did was in summer 2000 shortly before they were replaced with the light rail.

Ah yes. I remember riding that when I went to school at NJIT many years ago, we'd take the subway back and forth from Penn Station to Warren Street all the time. One day I was curious to see what the rest of the line looked like so I took it uptown. Didn't even know it went above ground. It looks almost like a little toy bus on rails with this cute little horn. Seriously when was the last time you saw a subway that has to cross an at-grade intersection at a traffic light! This video is nice and you can tell it's Newark from all the urban blight and scraps and trash on the ground.

Beautiful trains. PCCs operated here in Mexico City 1950-1980. The main and longest route was Xochimilco ( Soh-Chee-Meel-Coh )-Mexico City Downtown ( Cathedral terminal ). From Dowtown there were other secondary routes. The main route is still active but half of the original route now operated by LRV trains. The year 1970 metro subway system started to run from TAXQUENA station to Downtown. PCC were gone by 1983 when the main route started rebuilding works for LRV service starting 1990.

Looked so cool. Like buses on train tracks! Now they replaced these with your typical boring trams.

The trolley line with which I grew up, except the cars were gray/white/blue then.

I had the pleasure of riding these in 1984 on a trip to NY and the south. These cars seemed to be exactly like the LA Transit Lines, LAMTA P-3 all electrics operated on the "P" Line. Those cars were 10' wide are these the same? Another question another of your viewers said there was 1 of these in San Francisco on the "F" Line,I thought they got more than one of the fine cars, Can you clear that up for me? Thanks, Mike Campbell

Mike Campbell these are identical to the Los Angeles P3 PCCs. Except these are standard gage and have folding doors. LA had the narrow gage 3ft 6in trucks with blinker doors. 11 of them went to SF F line.

To lailasalas: Did Mexico save any PCC cars for historic reasons?

  • @TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyan

Are these cars still in service?

These have been replaced with light rail vehicles. Several are at museums and a good number of them have been rebuilt and are now in regular service on the F line in San Francisco.
