      i am turning 17 soon, and im not much of a gamer, but the original doom got me into gaming, and it was really good and very recently i tried quake, and the first quake might be my favorite game now. i also played quake 2 and liked it a bit but the first is just way cooler and better to me.
      i do not like multiplayer like against each other games, i touched quake 3 once and it isnt for me and i dont think any game after quake 2 is for me

    This is my recollection from my 17.05 run and bit broader on the origin of the Quake "Marathon" phenomenon.
    For the first few years of Quake speedrunning all focus was on either individual levels or the Quake done Quick projects. There is a very simple reason for that, it was not possible to record demos across level changes, so proving a single-segment run was not possible unless you recorded your run outside Quake, which very few had the possibility to do. The QdQstats mod allowed you to modify the starting stats for each level, in this way you could then stitch together invidual demos and create the illusion of a single run for Quake done Quick.
    On 15th March 1999 version 1.6 of QdQstats was released, this version allowed for a single demo to continue across level changes, so now we could run whole episodes and the whole game in one go. The only problem now was that none of the top runners cared :-). Illka, Markus, Joe, Peter, Martin S and many others had the skill (and they did some episode marathons) but apart from the sort of "proof of concept" runs from Martin B and Marlo, no demos of the full game were made.
    I was never the fastest runner, instead mainly focusing on 100% category where I could figure out the optimal way to manage pickups, route and monster killing, but the lack of interest for the full run from top runners made me finally try it and see what I could achieve to perhaps provoke a response, which I surely did with Martin's runs!
    The focus for my run was to incorporate a few "difficult" tricks in the first episodes and then simply survive until the end. The reason I did not start with EP4 was that I could not do the curl on E4M1 and long bunny on E4M2 more than once every 100 attempts! The concept of daring to try to do more tricks later in the run and then fail was almost unthinkable to me. Remember that I, and everyone else in the speed running world, Doom as well as Quake (that was the speed running world on PC), were used to runs of a 0.5 - 3 minutes and doing a run for 15-20 minutes and fail at the end was a mental barrier to be broken. Why do three difficult tricks in the last levels to save 10 seconds when failure would loose the whole run! I'm sure it sounds strange to modern speed runners, but that was I think the feeling of all runners back then, until Martin and Connor showed the way. Much later, when I watched Coolkid streaming on twitch his entire mindset on risk during a run was so different to mine that I really felt like the relic I was :-)
    /Daniel

    I've said it once and I'll say it again - the Quake community is just built different and absolutely does not get the exposure it deserves.
    Don't sell yourself short either, Connor, having a WR hold for 8 years is impressive, even if it's not very optimal by today's standards, it was mindblowing back then.

      This is probably on balance my favorite channel, and the burnout risk is real. CZcams is littered with people who tried to keep up with a production schedule and paid the price of learning to dislike the things they loved to share. If one a month is easy to do, great, but if it's not, anyone who gets wrapped up in expectations for a new video needs to get a grip

    Great video Connor. I was a little surprised not to hear more talk of Quake done Quick lite. While thousands of attempts are done per level, the end result is each level with stats going on. I’d say the future is moving towards doing the rabbit run or Quake don’t quickest light single segment. As unlikely as that sounds, look what people are willing to spend months grinding!

    Fun fact: Kukkye(or Cookye) and Jukebox used to play together on the same TF2 team when there was still a decently sized scene for that game. I think Kukkye's movement looks particularly smooth because he has always had very calm mouse movement; not just when moving, but also when aiming hitscan. It's like his crosshair just automatically follows the target around with a slight delay, rather than him frantically reacting every time the enemy changes direction. I seem to recall he used an extremely low sensitivity as well, though the average player's sensitivity seems to have dropped a lot over the past 10-15 years, so maybe it isn't as low as it seemed at the time, relatively speaking. Thanks for the video.

      Yes all speedrunning is done on the original version, using Joequake as the engine. This keeps the original physics/gameplay 100% intact while providing lots of convenient/modern features

    I did a speedrun like a year ago with Quake Remaster, it took me roughly an hour and 30 minutes to complete the whole game with a few tricks implemented. I had fun doing it, but I know I could better in the future. After the May 1st - October 1st casual gaming severe reduction is finished, I might get back into the swing of things :D

    The game that made TF2 jumping what it is today. Even though I never played quake I will always have enormous respect for how revolutionary this game was and still is.
    It's also incredibly cool to see Jukebox here, I did not expect that.

    Its just unbelievable how mich time, effort and pacience gamers spend to archive these records. I love your videos. Superp qualitty.
    If theres an anouncement for a new upload its like holding the wobbly ladder on which your best friend is standig and you: Sorry I have to leave. Making the sound of roadrunner. 😂
    And I hope there will be a chance to see your band in RLP in the future. Arround Koblenz would be amazing. 😃😉

    Do episode selects not count for time? Can you potentially take your time there? (though, it would be quite anti-climatic 😆)

    • @quakespeedrunsexplained
      @quakespeedrunsexplained  Před 2 měsíci

      Yes, the start map doesn't count towards the time. Runners can relax there if they want, but most people race through it anyway :)

    As a late teen when this game was released I would have never imagined seeing runs like this. I'm old enough to remember fingering(insert joke here) John Carmack to get updates on when Quake was going to be released, and playing it on my overclocked 150Mhz 486 for the first 3-6 months it was out. I managed to get the game one day early since my local Best Buy had messed up and put it out a day early.

    Great job as always! But I don't get something. You said that in his run Clouder went for every single trick, and yet his time is ~1.5 minute slower than segmented run(correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's 10:02 at qdq site). So what's the difference between single segment an segmented runs as far as strats go? Is it technically possible to go for segmented time in SS attempt or for example RNG is dependent on something, like i dunno, number of levels beaten or something. (Possible video idea SS vs segmented runs comparison + explaination? ;) )

    • @quakespeedrunsexplained
      @quakespeedrunsexplained  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Theoretically you can push things closer to the segmented run, but realistically there are a lot of tricks and techniques which will never make it into SS, either due to their sheer difficulty (Jukebox's 19s run on e1m1 was the result of 70,000 attempts) or due to once-in-a-lifetime RNG (Chambers' e2m2, for example). I don't want to make the classic "any% is dead" claim, but we are pushing the limits of what is possible is a marathon run. Even breaking the 11:2x barrier would be insane at this point :)

    • @vooydzig
      @vooydzig Před 2 měsíci

      Oh wow! I knew it was a grind in segmented run, but had no idea how much of a grind it was. Thanks for the explanation.
