I think the thing you keep forgetting about Amos is that he kills for pragmatic reasons and not so much out of emotion. He wanted to kill Clarissa not because he was angry but because he felt she would not be grateful for the mercy and would continue to come at them (I can't remember the exact quote he said to Anna but it was something like "this one will not be grateful"). So rather than be looking over your shoulder, you remove the threat and move on. I believe he saw that Clarissa had truly given up and was no longer a threat to Amos or those that he feels he needs to protect so he is capable of moving past his reasons to kill her.

Re: Medina Station and Salvage Rights. From the backchatter in S2 and 3, we know that the Mormons filed some kind of a claim against Fred Johnson and Tycho Station. Meaning, they got some kind of insurance or lawsuit settlement/process going. That means that the Mormons legally claimed the Nauvoo as a loss and legally gave up their claim on the vessel in exchange for the payout on the insurance and lawsuits.
Then Fred Johnson sent the Tycho Crew to recover the ship itself as legitimate salvage. Tycho and the OPA have a claim because they paid for that ship, theoretically, with the legal action against them by the Mormons. Abandoned vessel, floating in space, paid for by the OPA funds... recovered by the OPA forces... for a ship whose original owners ceded ownership claim AND had all that time to mount any salvage expedition of their own, but did not... The Behemoth was legitimate salvage before she went to the Ring.
And then inside Abbadon's Gate, the Behemoth showed the inherent value in a ginormous space station vessel with spin gravity, and Medina Station was born. Fully under OPA control and legitimate salvage for Tycho Station and Fred Johnson. Thus Carmina Drummer is still in command of it because it was her command from Salvage to Gate to begin with.

    • @zammmerjammer
      @zammmerjammer Před rokem +14

The Mormons should thank Fred Johnson for stealing the Nauvoo from them. They'd be a few months into their interstellar journey and get the message to turn around and come back because we just found 1300 shortcuts.

    • @Yesquire0
      @Yesquire0 Před rokem +2

While it is possible that any sort of three-way settlement could be reached, the way insurance usually works is that the insurance company denies the claim, but assuming it actually pays it, or some portion of it in a settlement, the Mormons would have to sign over the rights to the lawsuit they would have against Tycho Station as part of the insurance settlement, and the insurance company would then pursue Tycho station for damages.
Legitimate salvage? I think not. You cannot steal a spaceship, then dump it when it is no longer of use to you, then claim it as legitimate salvage when you were the entity which 100% caused the theft and abandonment which led to the need for a salvage operation.
The real reason that the OPA holds the Behemoth is simply brute force. No court officer with a writ could serve that writ on Drummer and have her hand over the helm to him due to that piece of paper. No OPA court would issue that writ. No Belter would pay any attention to a writ from a UN court.

Without spoiling anything, all I can say about Murtry right now is the following: Amos found the detonator at the landing pad, so we know Murtry didn't plant it. Amos assessed that someone had blown up the landing pad; Murtry agreed with that assessment. The only people on Ilus before Murtry's ship attempted to land were Belters. Ergo, someone among the Belters planted those explosives and killed Murtry's people.
Now imagine that the same thing happened to the Rocinate when they landed. Imagine Naomi had been killed and Rocinate destroyed.
Murtry has every right to feel threatened and be pissed off at and untrusting of the Belters.

@@funnylilgalreacts Oh no I agree that the UN shouldn’t decide that. But with the laws as they are currently the Belters have no actual legal right to that planet, and the UN science team does. I’m assuming there was a treaty of some kind drawn up where there’s a legal process to go through in order to claim land in ring systems. The belters obviously couldn’t do that, but no one would bother bothering them until now.

It reaches out , it reaches out, it reaches out , it reaches out - 113 times a second.
Nothing answers , and it reaches out .
It is not conscious , though parts of it are.
There are structures within it that were once seperate organisms , aboriginal , evolved and complex.
It is designed to improvise , to use what is there and then move on... good enough , is good enough .
And so the artifacts are ignored or adapted , the conscious part try to make sense of the reaching out , try to interpret it.
One imagines an Insects leg , twitching , twitching , twitching . One hears a spark , closing a gap , the ticking is so fast.
Another, oblivious, re-experiences her flesh falling from her bones, the nausea and fear and begs for death, as she has for years now.
    Her name is Maria.
It does not let her die, it does not comfort her , it is unaware of her, because it is unaware, but unaware is not inactive, it finds power where it can, nestled in a bath of low radiation, tiny structures , smaller than atoms, harvest the energy of the fast moving particles that pass through it ..subatomic windmills.
It eats the void , and it reaches out , it reaches out, it reaches out .
In the artifacts that are conscious, memories of vanished lifes still flicker .
Tissues that were changed without dying , hold the moment that a boy heard his sister was leaving home .
They hold multiplication tables , they hold images of sexuality and violence and beauty , they hold memorys of flesh that no longer exists, they hold metaphors , mitochondria , starfish , hitlers brain in a jar , hell realm.
    They dream.
Structures that were neurones twitch and loop and burn and dream.
Images and words and pain and fear.
    Endless.
An overwhelming sense of illness, an old mans remembered voice whispering dry words that it is unaware of.
Full, fathom, five, thy father lies, of his bones are coral made .
If there had been a reply, it could end, if there had been anyone to answer, it would have come to rest like a marble at the bottom of a hill , but nothing answers.
The scars know that no answer will ever come .
But the reflex triggers , the reflex triggers , the reflex - and it reaches out .
It has solved a billion small puzzles already , a cascade of reflexes.
It has no memory of having done so , except in its scars.
There is only reaching out , delivering the message that its task is complete.
Nothing answers and so it cannot end.
    It reaches out.
It is a complex mechanism for solving puzzles using what there is to be used .
Those are pearls that were his eyes and so, it has the Investigator.
Of all the scars, there is one that came last , that is most intact , it is usefull and so it is used.
It builds the Investigator from that templet , unaware that it is doing so and tries another way of reaching out.
And something answers, something wrong and foreign and aboriginal, but there is an answer.
So over the course of years it builds the Investigator again and reaches out.
    The investigator becomes more complex.
It will not stop until it makes that final connection and it will never make that final connection .
It stretches, tries new combinations, different ways to reach out, unaware that it is doing so, unaware that it exists.
    Empty .
    Except in the insignificant parts.
The insectile leg will twitch forever.
The scar that wails for death, will wail forever, the Investigator, will search forever, the low voice, will mutter forever.
Nothing of him doeth fade, but suffers a sea change, into something rich and strange.
    It reaches out .

His actions seem to fall along certain lines which divided many during the George Floyd era. Ergo, there are some very passionate opinions about his actions, which tap into some real-world politics.
Debates have gotten heated. Chart your own course but _caveat emptor, Imperatrix._
On another note, the settlement on Ilus, as most fans already know, was a purpose-built and rather functional set. Production decided they wanted the equivalent of a standing set for all the filming we did, so showrunner Naren Shankar made us go to New Terra and build it. 😉
Probably the coolest set I've ever been on, IMO, because we had actual storage and shelter in the structures. It was 360° picture-friendly. It was our own little space-frontier town! And while we were there [REDACTED FOR, uh, REASONS].

EVERYONE liked the original actor for Arjun better. But Brian George needed work when The Expanse was cancelled, so he'd gotten another gig. They learned a lesson about adjusting the story to keep their popular actors continuously on contract. That's probably part of the reason they took the novella of Bobbie's activities on Mars and wedged into book 4...otherwise the Draper character would not have appeared in this season.
You knew something wasn't right with Leelee when she swept across the frame. Most people don't see that.
When Bobbie got the cold shoulder from those two martian officers, they gossiped that she was the one who "got our team on Ganymede killed."

The Miller/Investigator is described in the books much better than they do in the series but think of the protomolecule as part of an integrated computer program that needs answers to things it doesn't understand. It looked inside its own program and found the consciousness of Miller that it had absorbed. It saw him as the perfect tool to discover things it doesn't know since that was his job, he was an investigator. So it basically created a subroutine called the investigator but it keeps evolving and Miller's personality keeps altering it much as artificial intelligence would evolve so whenever the investigator evolves too far and starts to become too much like Miller it gets destroyed and recreated back to the baseline. In the books, it said that happened thousands of times.

For real, you have to stop being so jealous of Clarissa! 😄But seriously, it’s true she wasn’t the most fleshed-out character. But like I wrote on the last video, Amos saw someone like himself - a killer - managing to find her own morals and act on them to _save_ everyone. Amos still hasn’t quite found an internal moral compass, and looks to others for that, so no wonder he’s intrigued. Besides, he was ready to kill her, and even told Anna that Clarissa was irredeemable and unrepentant - and he was wrong.
Amos was also intrigued by Cortazar who, sort of like Amos, lacked empathy. But where Cortazar is physically unable to regain it, Amos might not be, and Clarissa is proof that it’s possible for some.

What's going on, on Illus, is a little more clear in the books.
The protomolecule ring-builder system arrived in that system, at some point in the distant past, and hijacked the developing life, there, just as it tried to do in our own Solar System.
Then, whatever happened to its creators happened, and the rings got closed, and the machinery on Illus slowly shut down.
While everything was turned off, a second set of biological organisms (or remnants of the first) evolved on Illus, and its evolution has been trucking along for at least a billion years.
So, you have the ring-builder system, in place, and then the subsequent evolution of new life forms in and around the ruins of that old system.
Now, people from the Solar System have arrived and introduced terrestrial biology into complex strangeness that was already there.
That's why Dr. Okoye said there's no way to know how that interaction will play out.
    It's, basically, applied chaos theory.

Here's how the timeline of the planet has been described (in the show to this point, no book knowledge):
    1. A billion+ years ago a protomolecule probe arrives in the system and finds a planet teaming with bacteria, it uses this raw biological material to construct machines and, eventually, a ring gate (I don't think that part is mentioned, but it's pretty obvious that it would have had to have happened).
    2. Meanwhile the native life on the planet continues to evolve. This is one of the three biomes Okoye was talking about.
    3. (I don't think it's explicitly stated, so this might just be my assumption) The protomolecule builders arrive and set up a new civilization on a planet which has its own native life. This is the second biome.
    4. The protomolecule builders are wiped out in some as yet unexplained cataclysm and the ring gates are closed in an attempt to stop the cataclysm from spreading.
    5. Seasons 1-3 occur, ending with the opening of 1300 new worlds.
    6. The Barbapiccola, full of Belter settlers arrives, thus adding the third biome.
    7. Season 4 occurs.

I agree that Chrisjen should have considered more how the invitation to dinner would have looked from the Martian point of view, but I think she honestly didn't think of it that way. She really did see it as giving Bobbie a boost - showing people that she had friends in high places. That's the kind of political capitol that Avasarala lives and breathes, and exactly the kind of gift she'd be able to parlay to better her own position. But Bobbie is a Martian, and even more importantly, a Marine. She's not dumb but she doesn't play those kinds of political games - in fact she hates those kinds of games. As a Marine she was willing to give her life for a higher purpose. For most of her life that purpose was the Dream of Mars, and loyalty to Mars and solidarity with other Martians was everything to her. For her, at this point, as much as she may like Avasarala personally, and knows that she acted correctly both in her original defection and inside the ring space, that relationship is still an uncomfortable reminder that she does have loyalties outside of Mars. And while Avasarala is simply too much of a political animal to ever really be bothered by what other people (with the possible exception of Arjun) think of her, outside of how it helps or hurts her politically, Bobbie actually does care. Bobbie has too much strength and conviction to let it actually keep her from doing what she thinks is right or necessary in a given situation, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt when the people she did it for think of her as some sort of traitor. It's that "caring what other people think of her" aspect that didn't even occur to Chrisjen.

Disagree somewhat with your thoughts on Clarissa. While I do not think we are necessarily supposed to “like” her, especially in season 3, I also would not describe her as a one-note character as you have.
For one I think the show did a good job clearly showing her struggle with killing Ren. She was very much driven by revenge and, in the same way Prax did, tried to fashion herself into someone else to achieve it. Only she didn’t have an Amos there to stop her from doing something she would ultimately regret.
And while yes the writers show she has “daddy issues” so to speak I think it is a bit reductive to boil her motivations down to that entirely. I have always interpreted Clarissa as wanting to prove to herself more than anyone that she could be as motivated and consequential as her father and sister-two larger-than-life people who changed the world, for better or worse.

One of the things the show has to gloss over is setting up the stage for where we are in the story. The term "Gold Rush" should say it all. Thousands of worlds open all of a sudden completely changes the political landscape of the solar system. Here is where my Star Trek idealism comes in because this is a major problem of humans spreading everywhere without regard to a "Prime Directive". What Star Trek was an allegory for in the real world was the cold war and how superpowers should have a responsibilty to care for what we explore and find. When in fact like the Expanse is showing that we will go and plant our flags and claim everything is ours with no regard to indigenous life or what is going on with the protomolecule and whatever destroyed it. The book is more detailed of the time jump and the political atmosphere where the show just quickly glosses over it.
