  • What’s it like to raise kids in a motel, where you don’t feel safe about them playing outside? Where all you have is a small kitchenette and a bedroom? This is the "motel generation".

This situation ain't that bad compared to the actual shit going on here..the least nz herald could do is interview actual born kiwis and have an actual kiwi person doing the interview. Like that's just common sense.. where the fucks Guy.

I pay 425 a week for a nice 2 and half bed house in chch and theirs alot of 2 bed flats here for under 450 so why cant they find a flat.? Alot of small flats are nicer than the motel. I feel they choose this life to save and i do understand. It seems to be cheaper living in a motel but i feel its a bit lazy too.

It's easy to watch a short clip and judge the families portrayed, but it is not so easy for a family to just up and move from city to city. It sounds to me like they built a life in that town and the husband has work. If he is working full time the wife would have to go to Christchurch by herself and stay in a motel while looking for a rental, are you going to pay for her to do that? Are you going to watch her kid while she hunts for a house? The single mother has family in her town and is trying to rebuild her life, who knows what obstacles she has faced, why should she have to move to a whole new town on top of it. As for why these families can't find a home, every city is different, most places I've seen cost more than $450 for a decent 2 bedroom. There are actually many other barriers for people to get into safe, dry homes such as, prejudice. Judging people as lazy is one such prejudice

Send them home, that's a job and accommodation for a proper kiwi, that child was born prior to the housing crisis.
