  • Getting up at 5 am to drive 90 minutes to a dark and stormy location on the south west coast path isn't everyone's idea of a fun landscape photography adventure. However, you can sometimes get the best photographs in the worst of conditions, so join me in this video as I head to Start Point lighthouse on the south Devon coast to see I can capture a dramatic coastal image in some stormy weather.
    If you're interested in seeing some of the photographs I took that day in a bit more detail then head over to my blog at:

      Cheers Julian (great name by the way). Yes, I have to agree with you about the normal exposure. I'm a big fan of long exposures on the coast, but in this instance I think the shorter exposure works better. 😀

    Yep getting up early all week for work, a lay in at the weekend is very appealing but then when you get out in pre-sunrise blue hour its all worthwhile, despite the conditions. Nice video Julian, my favourite shot was No 2. When you started the reveal on this shot, I actually liked the minimalist crop of just the sky and sea with this

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  Před 5 lety

      Cheers Jamie, yeah, lying in bed at the weekend always seems the sensible choice, but who said landscape photographers were sensible!! 😀 Funny you mention that crop, I did consider getting the 70-200 out at the time, but with so much going on I didn't have time. It all happens so fast first thing in the morning doesn't it. 😀😀

    Bloody Start Point! I found it a tough place to shoot when we were there with Gareth but you always make it look so easy. Well done for getting out there early and braving the worst of the weather. #2 Is my favourite but then I am a sucker for a long exposure.

    Any one of the four images would make getting up early worthwhile -- well done! #1 is my favorite because of the beautiful colors and the texture in the sky and sea. The foreground rocks are the perfect complement to the view up the coastline which shows, IMHO, just the right amount of land. Thank you for sharing.

    Should have a wee visit to Argyll's Secret Coast, this is where I am based, just ten yards from the waters edge. A photographer's paradise. If its landscape, otters, golden and sea eagles, deer, red squirrels, pine martens, to that of our national sport of shinty, we have many subject matter to keep everyone happy.

    Great video Julian but it did look like you were suffering (shivering) a little for your art. However, you made some beautiful images and my favourite is number one as I prefer its sky to number two's and the foreground is less dominant too. I like the composition of number one which draws your eye in a sweeping crescent along the coast line and into the light 👌 My second choice is number 3 because I'm a sucker for long exposure skies, and it appears to have been whitewashed. Looks like you photographed number 4 before it was painted. Now we know why they don't spend money whitewashing them anymore - PHOTOSHOP!

    Great video Julian. Sometimes the worst condition make the best images. I like the colours in 2, for me the ones of the lighthouse miss a little bit of light. Did you consider blending the long and short exposures to have the flattened out water but bring a little of the the texture in the clouds through. I I have done that with water before and something I want to try on clouds sometime?

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks Mark. Good suggestion actually. I just checked in LR, and it is exactly the same composition in both images, so a blend of both images should be easy enough. I never think of these things at the time though! 😀😀

    Hi Julian. Glad you got your reward for the early start ! The first image is a stunner - love the dramatic light and of course the coastline is beautiful. I feel your pain with the water on filters issue. My Lee filters are terrible if they get the slightest bit of rain or spray on them. How are you getting on with your D850 now that you've had it for a while (guess it must be 12 months?). I'd be keen to see a long term review if possible please. Great video from a cracking location Julian. Many thanks for sharing.

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  Před 5 lety

      Cheers Tim. I'm actually in the process of moving to Kase Filters, which are much better at beading off water, and easier to keep clean. But as you saw in the video, I'm still using Lee grads which are a major pain the in the wet! Still loving the D850. Nearly 18 months I've had it now. Not much changed for me since I did my 6 month review video, so I probably wouldn't do another video (sorry!). Not sure I've got that much to add. 👍😀😀

  • @gavinlindsay
    @gavinlindsay Před 5 lety +1

    Hey Julian, love your work, especially as a fellow Scot who lives abroad. Do you feel you need an ND grad? Or would you get the same results from a multi exposure shot and stiched in lightroom.vCheers. Gavin

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  Před 5 lety

      Thanks Gavin. Us Scottish invaders have to stick together! lol I use ND grads a lot less these days because of the D850, but if I need to balance the dynamic range I will almost always opt for a filter over a blended exposure. I'm not saying one way is better than the other, but I'd rather do it at the time of shooting so I can see the final exposure there and then, and it means I have less to do in post processing. 👍😀👍

  • @deltafit
    @deltafit Před 5 lety +1

    Do you not get vignetting with your filters at 18mm?

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  Před 5 lety

      No issues at 18mm. Sometimes I might get something around 17mm, but that depends on how many filters I have attached.
      👍
