I'm surprised you weren't crazy about this song. Le Freak is consistently ranked as one of the most classic and loved disco songs of the 70's. Also, Chic is ranked as one of the best disco groups of the 70's right up there with the Bee Gees and KC & The Sunshine Band.

As someone has already said, this was Nile Rodgers reaction to being told to f off home by the doormen at Studio 54..the big club/disco in the 70's..they had been invited there by MJ but couldn't get on and told to f off..so Le Freak isn't a dance but a metaphor for f off..Rodgers and Chic got the last laugh because this was a mega success and is an iconic part of their songbook..

I cannot recall there ever being an "instruction manual" or prototype. I think it was more, you went to Studio 54 and "freaked out" and danced in whatever way. I am not sure if they're really basically saying sniff a whole lot of cocaine and go out on the dance floor and go crazy like most people did in the 70s when Studio 54 was huge and disco was it.

I recently heard this song on a rerun of an old American Top 40 countdown from the 70s and Kasey Kasem said that this song, not the album, just the single, of this song, had sold over 11 million copies. That was really huge back then because people had to physically go to a store and buy a copy of the song, not just make a click on their favorite device.

This is a brief clip from a show called "Soul Alive" that came on in NY back in the late 1970's. It featured kids from various High Schools dancing to the popular songs of that time. The girl in the black vest and white shirt underneath with a grey skirt on is doing "the freak." She is dancing with the guy wearing the "orange" looking suit on...Yes, it WAS a dance...in NY anyway 😊

Angela, you have to learn the history behind this song. This song was written as a result of Chic not being able to get into Studio 54. They showed up and tried to get in but at the time no one recognized the band members so they weren't allowed in. As a result Nile Rogers and the band wrote the song, but they wanted to call it "F*** YOU*, and changed the hook to "Freak Out". They even mention 54 in the song lyrics.

@@jaysonshift4392 On a cold New Year’s Eve night in 1977, Studio 54 in New York City was hopping with celebs, hipsters, and wannabes. Grace Jones invited Chic to the club to discuss producing her next project. Edwards and Rodgers tried to enter but weren’t on the list. They couldn’t convince the doorman that their hit song “Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)” played frequently inside the club. Chic was turned away at the door with nowhere to go, so they headed home and wrote a spiteful song about the stone-faced doorman.
A new song came together neatly expressing their emotions called “F- Off.” Edwards wanted to remove the curse words, but the replacement titles weren’t working. The lyrics Ah freak off! didn’t quite have the ring of Ah f- off! But the opening lines sparked a new title.

Hi Angela 😊 Great reaction to Le Freak😊👍 This song had so much air play in the 70s... cruising and listening to the radio😊 The dance basically is shaking your hips and moving your feet and raising your arms above your head and clapping to the beat 😊 On the Boogie meter I'm going to give it a four because it has a great beat and you can dance to it😊 Have a great day and bye for now 😊👍

Nice! This song was huge when it dropped. I was ten. There was no "freak out" dance other than what dancers could come up with free style. The "freak out" line replaced the "forget you" sentiment that inspired the song after Studio-54 wouldn't let Nile Rodgers in one night.

One of my favorite Disco songs! Chic's story is quite extensive, but I will say they are an iconic Disco band! They also wrote and produced material for Sister Sledge, but I don't know of any other acts they helped! Nile Rogers did perform on the 2013 hit song Get Lucky by Daft Punk with Pharrell Williams singing lead!
