Ragley Marley Hardtail Mountain Bike Dream Build Long Term Bike Check. Alternate Title: "One Love, One Shock. One Year With my Marley"
Its been over a year since I built my Marley Hardtail. This was a dream build of sorts. I wanted to build a highly capable Mountain Bike that can handle a variety of conditons. You can really build a very capable hardtail for a reasonable price. So let take a long term bike check on this custom Ragley. Hope you enjoy.

What do think of the bike? We're going to make a couple more changes and there is another project in the works. Stay tuned.
The Marley has taken over first place in my value hardtail chuck around bike ,(on my want list.)This video is a big part of that. Thanks for the video!
Happy to help! 🙂
Great video and sweet ride!
Thanks! 😁
nice bike check, lovely narration.
Thank you! 😁
Beautiful bike bro 🤙🔝
Thanks! 😁
Really nice edits and recap. You do a nice job isolating each component and reviewing based on your tastes. I like how you tied Mr Marley in at the end!
Thanks Rico! I put a lot of thought into these builds. It's fun to see if my choices worked out in the long term.
@@AdrenalineIsLife , I never thought about a cassette feeling like an anchor. Good comment.
👌nice build, those ragleys look awesome, im waiting for the ragley big Al 29 to be in stock, hopefully i won't be disappointed🤔👍
Thanks! I love that bike.
The Big AL is a great bike. Essentially the Marley as a 29er. I haven't met a person that didn't love it. Enjoy!
Nice vid
Thanks 😁
I have the same wheels on my BigAl and you’re right on the money. For a set of mid tier wheels the hub engagement is on par with very entry level wheels, they are lookers & fairly reliable.
These wheels would be amazing with a better hub. They've been tough although my rear wheel is needing a true as of this week. Not bad for a year and a half of hard riding.
Nice
Thanks! Glad you liked it!😁
@@AdrenalineIsLife ouais thanks 👍😍
I'm thinking of building up one of these frames soon as a bit of a summer project, ready for the winter slop. I have some old parts laying around I might be able to scrape a full bike together with, will just need rims and a fork.
Nice! Were you able to get a frame?
@@AdrenalineIsLife No, everywhere looks like they are out of my size/colour choice. I'm still weighing up a couple of other brands as well.
@@superspecky4eyes These shortages are ridiculous. Hopefully they get some in stock soon.
Got a 2020 Mmmbop on 160mm front sus.
Best upgrades
Oval chain ring with upgraded rear hub to 108 POE . ( game changer )
Spank spike 777 Vibercore bars (50mm) and 35mm stem (defy)
I’m in my 50s so allot of it is for comfort
ergon seat and grips and running 2.8 tires on 40mm rims
Plush at low Psi
Love the Ragz man I run it up on Cali so boulders to ruts to kitty litter
Bike is a beast . Keepem spinning brother
Thanks! I really like your setup! The Mmmbop is an great frame. Should eat up gnar for breakfast. Enjoy!
@@AdrenalineIsLife Ragz are bad ass bikes brother , I’m thinking of getting a big Al for the next build lol

@@abmvt That purple is so nice. I may be building a Big Al for my brother. Just waiting on him to give me the go ahead.
Never done a full build, pretty tempting though with bike availability at this time. Is it much of a savings, not too worried about saving much. I just want a MARLEY!!!
It's typically more expensive than buying a complete bike but you'll have a bike suited to your preference. If you carefully shop your parts, you can build something pretty good for a reasonable price.
I'm interested in the 2021 version of this bike, which I believe shares the same geometry. I've heard that the slack seat tube angle hinders its climbing performance. Do you agree with that? Thanks!
I guess it depends on what you are comparing it to. Some steeper hardtails are more efficient climbers but the Marley is by no means inefficient. I think the head tube angle plays a bigger part on a hardtail. Especially when the climbs become steep. If you're looking to race XC, there are better choices. For trail riding, I don't think its an issue. It's still a better climber than a full suspension IMO.
the video looks awesome. is that the new Hero9 you are using?
Thanks! That is a mix of footage over the last year since from the Hero 7, 8 and 9. They are all very good.
Nice build man. I'm debating between the mmmbop and the marely. My local trails are mostly flat here in florida but I travel to NC and TN alot so not sure if I should go with the slacker mmmbop or the marely. Thoughts?
Thanks!
Your bike choice depends on how gnarly the trails you ride are. I've ridden the Marley on most everything, but I would definitely appreciate more travel on the gnarly stuff. The Mmmbop might feel a bit floppy on flat terrain but should get you around. Won't be as efficient a pedaler as the Marley but it's still a hardtail and light weight.
I bought the 2020 Marley 2.0 recently and although I haven't ridden it much yet I love it so far. I'm in Naperville and I see you've done some videos at Palos right? Would you recommend I start there in terms of finding some good trails to really test this bike? Also, you're riding an Ergon seat right? How is that? I was thinking of making that one of my first upgrades.
Awesome. You'll really enjoy it. Palos is my home trails and I ride the Marley there most of the time. The Ergon is excellent but make sure you follow their instructions and measure your sit bones before ordering. They are insanely comfortable.
@@AdrenalineIsLife Do you find that you can ride the Palos trails much in fall and Winter or are they pretty much a no go until Spring? Thanks for the feedback on the Ergon saddle. Have you tried their grips?
@@andrewtaylor4313 You can ride year round as long as the conditions allow. Trail conditions are posted here.

Nice review! I have a Marley frame on order but I haven't decided on the amount of travel yet, thinking 140mm. How do you find 130mm, is it enough for rock gardens, drops and getting a bit of air on jumps?
Thanks. 130mm has been plenty for me. I'm as comfortable on it as I am on my enduro bike. I'm about 165lbs. If you are a bigger rider 140mm might be a better option. Also you might not have many choices in 27.5in forks at 130mm without changing air shafts.
@@AdrenalineIsLife That's good to know as I'm the same weight as you. I have a Lyrik 160mm from another bike so I was going to put a smaller airspring in that, I may start with 130mm and see how that goes.
@@davejs5779 That's a good start. Let's the bike be more playful. Plus the 35mm stanchions will give some added stiffness.
what about a fox 34 120mm 29” tire up front? think that’ll be a good setup?
I haven't spent much time on mullets but I could see that working well.
thinner cassettes leads to broken teeth easy.. i remember old bikes who go through a dozen chain before giving way
I don't hear of that happening often. I think you are more likely to break the chain.
I need a good hardtail.
It's nice having a hardtail. Even as a backup. They add a different element to your riding.
Great build. I'd love to know the overall cost to compare.
Thanks. Off the top of my head as built roughly about $2200.
@@AdrenalineIsLife Thanks! That's a lot of bike for that price.
@@gman6059 It was carefully shopped🙂
if engagement is not satisfactory of course hubs with better engagement, in this case new wheels, but I would put an oval chainring on, and swap brakes for something made of metal only, best bang for buck right now for 4 piston brakes is Formula Cura 4, but if you want to get max price tag Trickstuff Maxima is the one to go for.
so far best engagement hubs are Onyx with soft and almost instant engagement, and Box Stealth with harsher but similar to instant, and then there is Industry nine with 3 deg of engagement, then it's Chris King, for budget Spank has new hubs, with better engagement than the Hope PRo4 which I have.
Some great suggestions! Thanks. Very interested in the Onyx and the Box Stealth. I'm unfamiliar with Formula. They are not common here in the USA but I am intrigued. 🤔
@@AdrenalineIsLife I haven't tried it, but price is quite low for high end brake. they claim they found a way to manufacture it cheaper, due to new forging technique. I don't know more than that.
main reason Formula and Trickstuff are interesting to me is they are not Dot fluid, and they are made of metal, not plastic like Magura MT5, MT5 is fragile, I've seen picture of another youtuber's brake, he crashed and the plastic cracked so brake was leaking, plastic brakes is absurd, and spare parts are easy to get, no need to send brake in for rebuild, just order parts. Formula 4 has most power for the buk, Trickstuff Dirrittisima beat all brakes on the market but now there Is Maxima which has 25%.more power.
@@mtbboy1993 I will definitely look into them. I love a good value.
@@AdrenalineIsLife the broken brake i was reffering to twitter.com/TrailAttraction/status/1263396218782302209?s=19
@@mtbboy1993 definitely not good if that happens in the middle of a long ride.
how much money?
About $2200
