Between her last album and this one I lost my older brother to cancer. Her music has helped my family and I deal with the sadness and grief of losing a loved one. For me, this song is about connections we share, the complications that can permeate relationships, and moving through darkness to learn to forgive and love ourselves as if this were our last moment alive. This is her asking her son to go easy on her when he is old enough to ask her why she tore their world apart and the I didn't have time to choose what I chose to do means the actual divorce it must have been something that couldn't wait at least that's how I take it. Her singing and the melisma ad libs are ridiculous. I wasn't sure how I felt about this song but this is now my tenth or so listen and it could be one of her best songs. She is just a stone cold killer.

I think that verse is pertaining to how she didn’t have a chance to really consider marriage, maybe she feel like she got married to young or too soon…she haven’t experienced life yet. Just going by the verses that comes before that: I was still child, didn’t have a chance to feel the world around me. But idk. At least that’s what I get from it

Due to her vocal surgeries, she has trained to have a darker, heavier tone (which is easier on the vocal chords), rather than the light, open vowels she used to have. You can clock it on the SNL skit she did with her older songs, versus the studio versions. Her vowels are darker. I think it's a good change. It's like her voice getting older as well. Having more gravitas.
