For people who want to know how much of a vacuum you can get with this setup?;
That depends greatly on how short you keep all the rubber hoses, the shorter the lines the deeper the vacuum will be, with very short tubes you should be able to reach about 0,95 to 0,98 atm under ambient

I think the gauge I received is miscalculated from yours. It shows about -4 in-Hg when not connected at. When at maximum vacuum using that syringe, it shows about -29.5 in-Hg. Is there any easy way to properly calibrate this style of gauge myself?

Sorry, this style can’t be calibrated, you just have to check what is “0” at your elevation with the specific gauge you haveZ

Does not the gauge measure the difference between the internal and the external pressure, and thus should read exactly zero when disconnected regardless of my altitude?
Anyway, I figured out a method for adjusting the gauge. It may not be the ideal method, but it's the first method I have found to work. It's not very gentle, but it doesn't do any visible damage to the outside of the gauge. I strike the left side of the gauge against the palm of my hand as hard as possible! This causes the needle to move closer to the zero mark, bit by bit. I required repeated strikes to get it all the way to zero. My hand is a bit sore now, but I think the gauge now gives more sensible readings. Under the best vacuum I can get, it reads -28 inHg instead of being maxed at 30 as it was before, and now it returns all the way to zero when the vacuum is released.

You could probably achieve a higher vacuum by making the connections between the check valves and the piston as short as possible.
