    Late in the process of demolishing the Massey Building in Fairfax County, Virginia. A three-story-tall mound of dirt was trucked in to create a platform for a demolition excavator to reach the top of the 13-story building. As we join them, the mound of dirt is still there, but only the bottom few floors remain.
    Produced by John Z Wetmore, producer of "Perils For Pedestrians".

    these guys are sort of annoying the building down in preference to systematically working at its demolition. No materials seperation no pattern no zones, just stab at bit and then move on leaving it with as many jagged bits sticking out and as much overhanging debris as they can. There was no need to expend so much energy bending lengths of steel and then using a cutter head to poke at concrete. What a mess. They should watch the Dutch or Germans and learn.

      It depends on the way the job is done sometimes if they got a due date the building needs to be completely cleared

      I do agree they were using the shear wrong also I noticed it seemed the shears blade was extremly dull

      The steel sections were wider than the bite depth so he had to take a second bite to widen the slot and allow another deeper bite to complete but over and over he got distracted or tried to tear it off instead of completing at original position.

    One operator of the jaw machine must be new or not trained. Would take ten years for him to demolish that building. He spent 10 minutes trying to remove tin from under concrete blocks instead of knocking blocks down and then tin would have fallen out on its on.

      demo is the hardest thing on a machine, 5000 hours on a demo machine is about equivalent to 15000 on a dirt machine

    This isn't as rough on the machine as everyone thinks. A labounty scrap shear does no damage. What really destroys an excavator is a hydraulic hammer attachment. Doesn't matter how much grease is applied to the pins/bushings.

    Some of these videos make me nervous because some of the operators are a day late and a dollar short when it comes to waiting for them to do the right thing. I'm not even a heavy equipment operator-"NO EXPERIENCE" and I have a better idea for the most part, about much better ways of demolition just by me watching them. I've seen really good operators & they work from the top of a bldg. to the bottom (vertically). The good ones dig into the core of a bldg. & work all or most of a floor from the core to the outside walls. Doing it this way helps to keep the debris & dust falling to the inside. I would say it could be as high as 25%-30% or higher, the percentage of these operators who are either untrained or possibly incorrectly trained. Heavy equipment is so incredibly powerful & some of these operators are actually using the crusher/cutter head to crush brick & concrete block. WHY?!? Utter insanity! I've seen it so I know the strength of heavy equipment can easily knock down brick &/or concrete walls just by touching them. These "SO CALLED" operators are really smart, they know just how to "SSSTREEEEETCH" a job out to make it last a long, long, long, long time. If there were a test about the best/ easiest/ quickest ways that the operators should already know about for demolishing buildings, I can see that there would be many of them failing miserably. It's good that they're not in a vitally important job like being a doctor, nurse, paramedic, firefighter, police officer, etc. Many bldg. demolition contractors have earned a very "LARGE--THUMBS DOWN" for the very small or non-existent water spray they're supposed to be providing for dust suppression on all bldg. demolition jobs.

    What’s the purpose in using the H beam when you could use the jaws the strip the bricks back?

    • @swazeyyy
      @swazeyyy Před 4 lety +2

      Might be faster to knock out the non supporting parts of the building then using the jaws for supporting parts

    Looks like you lost a tooth off your bucket! Demolition is hard on the equipment. an excavator is used for excavating dirt, not demolishing buildings.
